go to applications install and install compiz-fusion. That'll get you the everthing but the wallpaper. Also install screenlets aka widgets

  • Very nice, I am currently using Vista Home Premium.

After hearing about Ubuntu I thought I'd give it a try. At first I tried to install it on an external drive via Wubi but I just got sent to the busybox or whatever it is. So now I'm trying the official way, Live CD...still downloading, can't wait!

  • How you get moving background??? Like DreamScene but this one looks better. PLEASE

  • same question with terrenceb123...

    how could u do that..

    really beautiful desktop anyway..

  • at around 1:15 in the video the windows slide behind the new window selected. Is that an option in compiz? could you tell me the name of it if so. Thanks, love the set up.

  • do you know how to install a dock?

  • That's awesome. How do you do it?

  • what movie player you use? i use vlc is there a better one?

  • I personally think its better because it is much more personal and secure than either Mac or Windows. Although it can be frustrating at time getting something to work, (dealing with compatibility issues) it gives me a sense of accomplishment when I figure something out. Plus in the process of figuring everything out you learn quite a bit about how computers function. I like having knowledge about what it is I am really doing if that makes sense. I'm also a lot more productive using Ubuntu.

  • IMHO, yes.

    There are two major downsides:

-You have to learn a new OS (really, everything is different)

-There are a few compatibility issues

Try a live cd and see for yourself! (You start loving it after a few months, not instantly, at least.. that's my experience..)

  • I like Ubuntu because it is free. There is a bit of a learning curve but I have been trying a few of the other Linux distros lately and Ubuntu 8.10 is by far the easiest to use.

  • how can i put a moving wallpaper like that??????

  • Check the comments for a short tutorial or google "Ubuntu Dream Aquarium".

  • wow thanks invariantvirus! you helped me alot! ^^

  • No problem. Enjoy Ubuntu!

  • how can i put the date and weather there inthe right side of the desktop???

  • Those are called screenlets. Open a terminal and type "sudo apt-get install screenlets". Although I have moved onto google gadgets, I haven't used screenlets for a while.

  • i mean the menus like firefox shut down button, etc. i saw that you can put the menus on the bottom of your desktop

  • ??? OK you lost me. Language problems I think. Give me time you see that and mabey I can figure it out.

  • i dont know what cute i should checked, coz theres many cube effetcs in compiz like desktop cube, rotate cube, 3d windows, cube gears, etc, i want to have a desktop cube, help me pls.,

  • the desktop cube is the foundation basically and all the other things like cube gear, 3D Windows, etc. are all just addons to the cube. If you just want the cube your best bet is to have desktop cube and rotate cube turned on. By default when desktop cube is turned on, you can rotate it by hitting both the left and right mouse buttons at the same time and dragging your mouse. I personally just have the desktop wall because I find it more productive and doesn't slow my computer down.

  • i already adjust the animation, close, minimize, and open, but still not effect

  • hmm, try go to the close effect settings. Delete everything in the effect box. Hit the default button, then double click the setting that comes up and change it to whatever you want and try it.

Hope that made sense. Otherwise I'm not really sure what the problem is.

  • Your ubuntu looks Nice, and the video is awesome,

  • Thanks!

  • can u put a link to ur cube background picture looks nice

  • Sorry but I can't for the life of me find where I got it. I've had it saved for ages on my external drive. If I ever find where I got it I'll put a link in my discription.

  • How did you make the Icons transparent??

And I've been wanting an Animated Background for a long time??? How did you get an Animated Background??

    //CpuProo

(not so much Proo now....right ;)

  • Check out the comments for a short tutorial or google "Ubuntu dream aquarium" for some instructions.

Dream aquarium is actually covering the icons. By adjusting the last number in the command:

./bwpropset -fs -s -sp -st -nf -ni -b -op .65

you can set the amount of transparency. I use .65 so I can see my icons. Others use .8 to make the desktop brighter but you can hardly see you icons. The icons are still usable, just transparent.

  • How to add Flame effect on closing windows Tutorial in ubuntu 8.10 ^__^

  • Make sure you have compizconfig-settings-manager installed then go to Effects>Animations>Close Animation and pick which animation you want. Hope that helps.

  • Do any of you ubuntu users have a linksys wireless-G adapter card that is working with ubuntu?

  • Sorry I don't. I've heard that Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex has had the best success with wireless cards though.

  • I was thinking of installing linux onto my computer but im too scared incase something happens to my computer such as the blue screen what i need is a very straight forward tutorial on how to install linux into my computer. So can i ask you something guys. IS THIS OS WORTH HAVING ONTO THE COMPUTER.

  • I've been using Ubuntu on and off for a couple of years now. The lastest version, 8.10 Intrepid Ibex, is the best and easiest to use yet. I have been using it ever since it came out and I don't think I'll go back to Windows. If your going to install it make sure and back everything up first. If you want a system that is really easy to install then get Linux Mint. It is a version of Ubuntu that is designed for beginners. It looks a lot like windows and you can do everything see in the video.

  • Ive backed my computer up in the unlikely event of a meltdown lol.

It looks sopisticated to use but then again i am new to it so it will take some time to get used to it.

  • What kind of video card do you have?

  • Nvidia 7300 GT. I may have said somewhere that it was in the 8 series earlier but it is actually the 7300.

  • i love the kube and cilinder, can i get it on my xp??

    btw 5*

  • I've heard that xp has a cube now but it doesn't look as nice. Just google xp cube and you can find it. Thanks for the rating!

  • its called deskspace but if you want it free youll have to torrent it :(

  • how do i setup the dream aquarium as a background in vista?

  • Oh sorry, didn't realize you wanted to set it up as your background. I'm really not sure if you can set it up as your background on Vista. It's a windows screensaver. Vista has a nice animated desktop background feature called "Dreamscene" though. I wish I could get those working on Ubuntu.

  • where did you get the aquarium background and will it work on vista? as i am stuck on it, till the insurance runs out anyway.

  • You can get it at "dreamaquarium" and it should work for Vista.

  • i installed wine, and configured it to allow virtual desktop and allow the window manager to control the windows unchecked, now how do i get the aquarium u got?

  • Its Dream Aquarium for windows. You can download the demo from thier site. Follow the rest of the instructions for bwpropset.

  • man that is amazing well done.

  • Thanks.

  • Download bwpropset then goto the directory you saved it in and run "make" in a terminal. Then run ./bwpropset -fs -s -sp -st -nf -ni -b -op .8

  • xwinwraps wont work for Dream Aqarium. Use bwpropset.

    Instructions:

    1) Run winecfg. Go to the graphics tab and check "Emulate a virtual desktop". Set "Desktop Size" to your desktop size. I have "Allow the window manager to control the windows" unchecked.

    2) Run the program through wine. Make all settings (Number of fish, etc) you want now,

    3) run bwpropset as follows: ./bwpropset -fs -s -sp -st -nf -ni -b -op .8

Then you'll see a crosshair. Select the wine window.

  • I can't seem to post links in the comments. Any way try google or search the Ubuntu forums. I'll try make a tutorial for it if I have time. Just make sure you are using the latest STABLE version of Wine. I upgraded to the latest development version and Dream Aquarium quit working right.

  • ubuntu is the shit and its free

  • Nice. How do you set up the animated background?

  • Thanks, that's Dream Aquarium for Windows. I installed it under WINE. Google Ubuntu Dream Aquarium for some tutorials.

  • Does it ever lag? Computer specs please?

  • Um, AMD Athlon 64 4800+, 2 gigs of ram, Nvidia force 8500. No lag, as you can see by the video. I've had that aquarium running for days with no problems. You can't see it very well but my CPU meter on the bottom hit 90 percent for a bit.
