how did you get desktop icons I have been told these do not work after the app is set to be in the background, also would this work with any program such as quake etc, thx
i think their called widgets, ubuntu has a thing called synapse if you have internet it lists all kinds of things available to dl by category and compatibility when selected it downloads and installs for you. its just a weather widget. if im wrong i appologise ive been using ubuntu for only a few months but its great
this is so cool! i already did download and install this in my ubuntu 8.10 and now am in the part of tutorial how the bwpropset works? I dont get this "From that folder, run bwpropset as follows: ./bwpropset -fs -s -sp -st -nf -ni -b -op .8" should i type this in the terminal? because when i type it nothing happens.. no activation or somthing, no response in the terminal, its noiying..:(
Very nice, I am currently using Vista Home Premium.
After hearing about Ubuntu I thought I'd give it a try. At first I tried to install it on an external drive via Wubi but I just got sent to the busybox or whatever it is. So now I'm trying the official way, Live CD...still downloading, can't wait!
at around 1:15 in the video the windows slide behind the new window selected. Is that an option in compiz? could you tell me the name of it if so. Thanks, love the set up.
I personally think its better because it is much more personal and secure than either Mac or Windows. Although it can be frustrating at time getting something to work, (dealing with compatibility issues) it gives me a sense of accomplishment when I figure something out. Plus in the process of figuring everything out you learn quite a bit about how computers function. I like having knowledge about what it is I am really doing if that makes sense. I'm also a lot more productive using Ubuntu.
I like Ubuntu because it is free. There is a bit of a learning curve but I have been trying a few of the other Linux distros lately and Ubuntu 8.10 is by far the easiest to use.
Those are called screenlets. Open a terminal and type "sudo apt-get install screenlets". Although I have moved onto google gadgets, I haven't used screenlets for a while.
i dont know what cute i should checked, coz theres many cube effetcs in compiz like desktop cube, rotate cube, 3d windows, cube gears, etc, i want to have a desktop cube, help me pls.,
the desktop cube is the foundation basically and all the other things like cube gear, 3D Windows, etc. are all just addons to the cube. If you just want the cube your best bet is to have desktop cube and rotate cube turned on. By default when desktop cube is turned on, you can rotate it by hitting both the left and right mouse buttons at the same time and dragging your mouse. I personally just have the desktop wall because I find it more productive and doesn't slow my computer down.
hmm, try go to the close effect settings. Delete everything in the effect box. Hit the default button, then double click the setting that comes up and change it to whatever you want and try it.
Hope that made sense. Otherwise I'm not really sure what the problem is.
Sorry but I can't for the life of me find where I got it. I've had it saved for ages on my external drive. If I ever find where I got it I'll put a link in my discription.
Check out the comments for a short tutorial or google "Ubuntu dream aquarium" for some instructions.
Dream aquarium is actually covering the icons. By adjusting the last number in the command:
./bwpropset -fs -s -sp -st -nf -ni -b -op .65
you can set the amount of transparency. I use .65 so I can see my icons. Others use .8 to make the desktop brighter but you can hardly see you icons. The icons are still usable, just transparent.
Make sure you have compizconfig-settings-manager installed then go to Effects>Animations>Close Animation and pick which animation you want. Hope that helps.
I was thinking of installing linux onto my computer but im too scared incase something happens to my computer such as the blue screen what i need is a very straight forward tutorial on how to install linux into my computer. So can i ask you something guys. IS THIS OS WORTH HAVING ONTO THE COMPUTER.
I've been using Ubuntu on and off for a couple of years now. The lastest version, 8.10 Intrepid Ibex, is the best and easiest to use yet. I have been using it ever since it came out and I don't think I'll go back to Windows. If your going to install it make sure and back everything up first. If you want a system that is really easy to install then get Linux Mint. It is a version of Ubuntu that is designed for beginners. It looks a lot like windows and you can do everything see in the video.
Oh sorry, didn't realize you wanted to set it up as your background. I'm really not sure if you can set it up as your background on Vista. It's a windows screensaver. Vista has a nice animated desktop background feature called "Dreamscene" though. I wish I could get those working on Ubuntu.
i installed wine, and configured it to allow virtual desktop and allow the window manager to control the windows unchecked, now how do i get the aquarium u got?
xwinwraps wont work for Dream Aqarium. Use bwpropset.
Instructions:
1) Run winecfg. Go to the graphics tab and check "Emulate a virtual desktop". Set "Desktop Size" to your desktop size. I have "Allow the window manager to control the windows" unchecked.
2) Run the program through wine. Make all settings (Number of fish, etc) you want now,
3) run bwpropset as follows: ./bwpropset -fs -s -sp -st -nf -ni -b -op .8
Then you'll see a crosshair. Select the wine window.
I can't seem to post links in the comments. Any way try google or search the Ubuntu forums. I'll try make a tutorial for it if I have time. Just make sure you are using the latest STABLE version of Wine. I upgraded to the latest development version and Dream Aquarium quit working right.
Um, AMD Athlon 64 4800+, 2 gigs of ram, Nvidia force 8500. No lag, as you can see by the video. I've had that aquarium running for days with no problems. You can't see it very well but my CPU meter on the bottom hit 90 percent for a bit.
Why would you want Ubuntu? it look's absolutely shit

IMHO, yes.
There are two major downsides:
-You have to learn a new OS (really, everything is different)
-There are a few compatibility issues
Try a live cd and see for yourself! (You start loving it after a few months, not instantly, at least.. that's my experience..)
