Like any good prank, some of the people there are 'in' on it, and some aren't. Also, it is important to point out that Bob Zmuda is in the 2nd row. Brown hair.. pony tail, flowered shirt. That's Bob.
I don't know. The way Jim picked up that chair... I've seen many people pick up a chair that way, and they were serious. But I'm sure this was staged, they are professional, after all.
Hey everyone, you can find some information about Andy and also it is his official online memorial where you can upload photos, videos or memories and wishes on this website - memmento.com! Please feel free to express your condolences
But the real fucked up thing is that wasn't Bob Zmuda but it was actually Andy Kaufman because the greatest scheme he pulled off is that he made everyone including his own family believe he died and he and the 5 or 6 others who are in on it having the greatest time of their lives.I'm pretty sure Carrey is one of the one is in on it and knows Kaufman is alive. And if ppl don't believe it research Kaufman has been setting it up for decades the perfect"Joke"and 1 day he'll shows up on Leno u'll see
@jozsefkacsa So only 5 or 6 others are in on it, yet you know of this?
He's dead man, he wouldn't have waited so long to come back if he wasn't; the new generation doesn't even know about Andy Kaufman, even with Man on the Moon he's pretty obscure to today's younger ones. If he came back now, his impact would've have been as big as it could've been - he knows better than to do that.
@SteveJawbs My friend why are u putting words in my mouth?Where did u see that I claimed I know it.It just a theory based on my researching Kaufman. When he worked on his pranks he was doing it to amuse himself and whomever was in on it.The rest of us most of the time didn't have a clue wtf is going on.He's most likely dead but from all the dead stars supposed to be alive like Elvis,2Pack,MJ.or Bruce Lee and so and so,Kaufman is the one whom most likely could pulled it off Merry Christmas Friend
Its OBVIOUSLY staged. dont you hear how 60% of the audience is laughing! and how everyone in the room already knew the character of tony clifton. any retard could recognize from a mile away that this was just a fun stunt to do in honor of andy kaufman for the release of the film
Take a look folks! LOOK! HELLO AMERICA! This is comedy , performing in the memory of a great comic whom we all miss dearly, his wit, his ability to capture the very moment and turn it on a dime to bring a smile.

@drmoonrat It didn't "make it" on the news, the film's PR department paid to have it on the news. That's how the business works. It's all a con, especially the "news."
@ricarleite lol yeh i cud tell the way jim carey was acting tho.unless he is making an immitation and kaufman kind of life with terrible acting skills.
@ricarleite this was strangely....the sweetest thing they could've ever done to honor the spirit of andy. this was great...and again, strangely made me smile.....
Jim clearly was in one the joke...It was a stroke of genius to have "Tony Clifton" turn up at this press conference, because it's exactly what Andy would've done...Spray painting those doors took things to a whole new level...This was very Kaufmanesque.
My general veiw is that Zmuda just wanted to surprise Jim Carrey with a little visit from Tony Clifton, and once Jim and Zmuda got into it, they just couldn't help themselves.
Uh, Jim Carrey clearly knows that "Clifton" was gonna show up and play up the Clifton character. For one, when Kaufman and Zmuda first dreamed up this reality comedy bit, everyone was convinced it was Kaufman playing Clifton. Some nights it was, and then some nights it was Zmuda.
Jim Carrey knows how to commit to a character live, in person, and he does so here, acting shocked by Clifton, executing his p'o'ed reaction expertly and causing general chaos as Clifton always did.
Trust me, if Jim wasn't in on this he would've had a much different reaction when Tony first walked in the room, and he certainly wouldn't have started wrestling with him on the table. This isn't Sean Penn we're talking about here; Jim's not that kind of person. It's definitely a just a shout-out to Kaufman.
@DirkDiggler1611 That does make sense because that must be why everybody was laughing and no one got up to leave. All I could think was wow he's not usually like that LOL they got me.
I met Tony Clifton in 1996 in Gainesville Florida. What a character. He was loud, rude, and ignorant. He wasn't even dressed in his tuxedo as we were at a hotel pool.
do you guys really think it could be possible a guy is disturbing a jim carrey-press conference without being shot by the security? of course it was a spoof as we know it from andy. but andy would have made it better.
This is EXACTLY how Andy Kaufman would've done it! And I bet Jim Carrey was in on it. I mean the guy's an actor. There's no telling what's staged and what isn't.
He slapped him, got thrown onto a table, threw all the equipment on the table on the floor, then stormed out the door like a defeated middle schooler...
PS I don't need hatemail responces. Calling it like I see it.
@SkaPow138 He deffinitely knew what was going on, and I think he went typical kuaffman on it. And the bit with the tea at the end of it was brilliant.
My guess is that even if a person deliberately tried to sound as stupid and incoherent as half the people who comment on many of these Youtube videos....he (or she) would not succeed. It's like a competition of the lowest dregs humanity has to offer. If this is any indication of how the world ends, I hope I'm gone well before the process completes itself. ;-)
As for Tony Clifton, well...he has his own unique style, that's for sure. If Las Vegas was a man, he would be Tony Clifton.
I do believe it was staged and Jim Carrey was in on it. The fight looks pretty real, except that Jim Carrey does not slap Tony very hard in the face, and that's a give away.. Second give away: the absence of bodyguards and security, especially when the fight breaks out. Man on the moon is a brilliant film btw ! Thanks for posting
how is there so much debate on this. anyone who thinks this wasn't planned and Carrey in on it is a moron! seriously. what? he played Tony Clifton in the movie he was promoting! Tony Clifton was a fictional character of Kaufman. I guess the people who think it's real, don't know about Andy Kaufman, or saw this movie. I'm sure that was Paul Giamatti.
@BrendanWhelan Well we're pretty sure that is was Kaufman's long time friend Bob Zmuda who was playing Clifton, but the question people are asking is if Zmuda planned this with Carrey, or if he decided to surprise him with this stunt knowing that Carrey would catch on and play ball.
@drmoonrat it was definitely planned ahead of time. and I think it's Paul Giamatti. Look up the original Tony Clifton that Kaufman and Zmuda played. he was a little different. this was the Tony that was played in the movie.
@cesurfly Nothing has ever been confirmed about this incident, but here is my personal opinion.
I believe that Bob Zmuda was playing Tony Clifton and crashed the press junket for Jim Carrey. The press conference was real, but Tony Clifton was not invited. I also think that Jim Carrey had no idea that Zmuda was coming as Tony Clifton, but you have to remember that Carrey is quick on his feet, and had been working on Man on the Moon for nearly a year, and had countless meetings with Bob Zmuda.
@drmoonrat So he probly like became friends with Zmuda, talked with him about how it would be fun for Clifton to crash his press junket, and for him to get angry in an Andy Kauffman-like stunt. Carrey would have known that all the press would have talked about it, how the Kauffman-like stunt would have given the movie some truly interesting press. And so then Zmuda turns up and they improvise a faux-angry sketch. Really, that is obviously what happened.
@jayrobson88 Well there's no doubt that Carrey would have totally went along with it, and him and Zmuda did become friends, but I don't think Carrey was part of the planning. I think Zmuda completely surprised him knowing full well that we would go along with it without missing a beat.
I also don't think Zmuda planned to stage the fight thier. I think the fight that broke out was just a spure of the moment surprise that Carrey threw in to keep make the joke even bigger. It's pure kauffman!
@drmoonrat Truthfully, in my opinion, and believe me, I've worked closely with actors and singing stars before as a personal bodyguard, so I believe this was entirely planned and scripted. The main reason is, where are the bodyguards and security during this? Believe me, this guy WOULD have been stopped before ever getting to the door. Much LESS would he have gotten anywhere NEAR Mr. Carrey. No, he never would have gotten in. It was a planned stunt for publicity.
@alexp8654 You do make a good point. If this wasn't planned with Carrey ahead of time, you'd think Tony Clifton would have had a tougher time getting into the room. But I'm pretty sure that Bob Zmuda was heavily involved with this press conference anyhow, so he would have easily been able to arrange this stunt.
So when Clifton came in, Jim Carrey immediately went along with the act. It was a classic Andy like moment, and Carrey played every moment and built the scene even more.
So that's my opinion. That is was all a surprise by Zmuda and the Carrey had no idea it was going to happen, but just went with it.
@drmoonrat come on, dont be ridiculous. Obviously Carrey was in on this and here acts as he thinks Kaufman would have. Maybe he didn't know exactly what Zmuda or whoever was gonna do but its pretty obvious he knew it was gna go down. If youve seen other interviews with Carrey at this time he kept saying crazy shit about he had "become" Andy Kauffman, this is just another instance of that. Its all part of weird publicity and inhabiting the role by Carrey.
People... Andy Kaufman is a performer. He would not be able to stand being out of the Spot Light for over 20 years. Stop trying to revive the man, let him go.
Could have been Zmuda...who knows? I'm sure it was a publicity stunt to help add realism to the characters in the movie, because many people who didn't know about Kaufman probably wouldn't have believed the Tony Clifton angle. This stunt just helped bring that to life. Good movie, by the way. One of my favorite Jim Carrey movies.
Probably. If we all know Andy Kaufman's style of entertainment, he would have put something realistic on like this & keep everyone in a questionable thought:" Was this real? This is actaully happen?" that type of thing.
guys get a grip, Its not Andy, Its not bob zmuda, Its not paul giamatti (whose, and jims impersinations were way more over the top). ITS FUCKING STAGED, JIM CARREY WOULD NOT COMMENT OTHERWISE and security would have been on the bloke the second he stands next to Jim. THINK people THINK!!!!
Like any good prank, some of the people there are 'in' on it, and some aren't. Also, it is important to point out that Bob Zmuda is in the 2nd row. Brown hair.. pony tail, flowered shirt. That's Bob.

Really, that is obviously what happened.
jayrobson88 1 year ago

It was a planned stunt for publicity.
alexp8654 1 year ago
@alexp8654 You do make a good point. If this wasn't planned with Carrey ahead of time, you'd think Tony Clifton would have had a tougher time getting into the room. But I'm pretty sure that Bob Zmuda was heavily involved with this press conference anyhow, so he would have easily been able to arrange this stunt.

@cesurfly part 2 -
So when Clifton came in, Jim Carrey immediately went along with the act. It was a classic Andy like moment, and Carrey played every moment and built the scene even more.
So that's my opinion. That is was all a surprise by Zmuda and the Carrey had no idea it was going to happen, but just went with it.
drmoonrat 1 year ago

While Tony hated Jim, Bob couldn't have been more proud!

This was the greatest promo ever, Kaufman would've loved it. Both Zmuda and Carrey were in on this for sure.

carrey would have know what was going on even if he was not in on it because of the movie i mean it is the type of comedy he did

It's not Zmuda - he was in the press conference - he was sitting down - look.
thejamesmcgeeshow 1 year ago
Where is Zmuda? If you can actually point him out in the crowd, then that would blow that whole theory out of the water.
Remember that at this time Zmuda had very long white/grey hair that went all over.

@thejamesmcgeeshow You can't see Zmuda anywhere.
