The only good reason to watch Fate Zero and then read the VN is to have that satisfying feeling that (almost) everything has been addressed accordingly.
@father042 It's better to actually play the VN, if only to understand the mechanics of the world. The FS/N anime glossed over quite a bit and tried to compress 3 divergent story paths into a single plot. You can watch Fate/Zero alone, of course. The first episode does a good job of explaining the mechanics, but you'll miss some of the foreshadowing/shout-outs to Fate/Stay Night.
