a good artist may know how to draw a few characters,maybe a little perspective, and shading techniques but a great artist knows how to do all of thee above because the constant practise and the knowledge of all techniques.

cant believe im seeing guys debate whos better out of jim lee or mcfarlane? its pretty simple...firstly jim penciled the highest selling comic ever (x-men no. 1 - 8mil ), secondly the styles are different but overal jim is better. mcfarlane said himself hes no good at anatomy which every artist should be. lastly, lee killed him on his own book when he pencilled the spawn cover. it was the best one ive seen!

jim lee is wayyyyyy better then mcfarlane. no diss to the man but there are characters and poses he just can't draw. lee can draw anything and its usually the best version there is. notice once dc got lee they made him draw publicity stills for all their main characters. they ain't dumb!

Jim often does sketches for free. Free sketches = super long wait times. Most other artists charge a "commission" fee, which involves you paying them X amount of dollars for what you want.
