Cutting the head off of a snkae isn not humane at all, it can take up to 2 hours for the brain activity to stop.. They are reptiles, poikilothermeric, and their systems work well in low oxygen levels... if you really have to kill a snake or any reptile the best and most humane way is to destroy the brain completely ie crush its head with a hammer or a rock.. better still just stay away from it, it wasn't doing anyone any harm and you were in 'its' territory.. not vice versa

When you cut a snake's head off, it can still deliver venom. Just don't get close enough to get hit. If you kill one as soon as it strikes, it can pump and pump and pump a nasty load into you still.

@2tur Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, snakes doesn't feel pain in the same way we do. Much like fish, they can feel, but not really with much pain.
Thats probably why snakes and fish are put down the same way, by cutting their heads off. It is the most humane way to do it, and even professionals do it.

@2tur Think hippie. use your brain. i absolutely love nature and believe it is wrong to kill however, in this sort of situation it is appropriate because it could have seriously injured or killed one of the children and one snake life is much better than 1 child life. and, its spine is broken and cant sent signals from the body to the brain and therefore cant feel pain.

Sure; maybe if the children were dancing around it, trying to pick it up and cetra, but aren't our children smart enough to know these potential dangers? It was black in a abyss of gray, not hard to miss.

The appropriate thing to do would have been to usher the children inside a building and then call the local wildlife authority to remove the snake and relocate it. There is a story where a teacher pulled this stunt and got bit. Almost killing herself and leaving small children basically unattended in the woods.
