  • holy shit my older brother used to be obsessed with this game and play it forever on 1 quarter and beat the game's high score when they had this machine at a local food and game place.

  • does anyone else call level 6 (the one with all the brain lazer things) the brain wave?

  • he reviewed every single port of this game, thats how awesome it is

  • This game would be a really nice action movie.

  • Was this game ever released onto the 400 or 800?

  • @DwightKSchrute3 I first played it on Atari 800XL so yep! It may only be my memory but it seemed like there were some minor improvements even. Either way, I think just about every 5200 game got unofficially converted over, I remember that being that case for Xevious at least.

  • The plastic holder for the two controllers came with robotron. I had it so I know. Damn I wish I had all my old shit from back in the days. My double cassette boom box, 5200, my nintendo with ROB(ROBOT OPERATING BUDDY). Damn it!!!!!!!!!

  • There is a plastic holder for the games that require 2 joysticks..Actually works pretty well!

  • My second favorite 5200 game after Space Dungeon, I still have unopened 5200 games that I bought years after the 5200 came out, got them for 99 cents each. This game and Space Dungeon came with a hard plastic holder that you slid both joysticks into. Just intense!

  • you can't get the XBLA version anymore since Midway went bankrupt. They took all their games off the marketplace.

  • @KingDavid73

You have a nice Robotron clone on the Indie channel of the XLA, for 80 MS points, named Ultratron. Less frantic in the begining, but very enjoyable.

  • @EricBarbman I'll have to check it out. I try to look over all the Indie games that come out, but I must have overlooked that one. Thanks for the heads up.

  • This system looks like it could have been a huge hit if it had better controllers, regardless of the video game crash.

  • nube gamer

  • Playing with 2 atari 5200 controllers. The thought of that makes my head hurt.

  • this reminds me of geometry wars

  • STILL BETTER THAN THE APPLE II PC 5 1/4" VERSION!

  • PRESS F5 TO SKIP ADS!

  • my dad owns a arcade Robotron cabinet, my highest score is about 3,000,000. (Yes, I play a lot)

  • LOLOLOL "Ideally you should find an arcade stand up machine but they're in short suply these days." BEST YOU CHANNEL EVER. your commentart is epic. Check out my bothers page the link is on my profile, one of the top make it your self arcard machine ppl on youtube by far. MAME on MK3 home made machine! Love your work!!!

  • my nanas husband made 1,043,225 pts. on the 37th level

  • Man, I don't think I'll even be alive in 2084

  • @colinstu thank god I'm Immortal

  • This reminds me of Smash tv the game

  • @Johnny2142T They were both by the same guy.

  • the Atari 5200 controllers sucked, the buttons on the sides would stop working after a short time.

  • This reminds me of Geometry Wars

  • this is the granddaddy of those type of games :)

  • yeah

  • I have the stand up arcade robotron...very hard game

  • Atari did Robotron good, both on the 5200 and 8-bit computers. I still play it on both systems. Awesome 8-bit gaming!

  • Comment removed

  • I have the XL/XE version which is basically the same game but you can use two standard joysticks for that true arcade feel. The Atari 7800 version is excellent as well.

  • i played this on the atari arcade

  • The modern day equivalent of this game would have to be Geometry Wars. Robotron is better though.

  • llamatron is wayyyyyyyyyyy better:D

  • Atari sucks.

Well, at least that's what I WOULD say if Atari sucked. Seeing as that's not the case, I think it's safe to say that this is awesome.

  • must have!!!!!!!!!

  • sounds awesome.

  • I use to have an Atari 5200 with this game and Space Dungeon. Both games requires both controllers to play. If you bought Space Dungeon you got the coupler that brought both controllers together...perfect controls.

  • Very surprising how the Atari 5200 can handle so many sprites constantly moving in their own path and not messing up the graphics, while the NES, which is far more advanced, starts the sprites and "twitching" when 4/5+ sprites appear on-screen.

  • watch out the brain makes the bitch go crazy

  • "It's as if all the characters have gained weight."

Remember, the camera adds 10 pounds!

  • I think he's aware of that; he's played the actual game on the 5200.

If you see his other reviews you can see there's hardly any distortion at all in his videos, they're done quite professionally in such an aspect.

  • I never knew the 5200 had this game. Looks and sounds nice..

    Nice review there

  • So this is prequel to Smash TV...

  • Smash TV is a rip off of Robotron, it came out years later after Robotron.

  • Actually the same clever bloke was behind both of them: Eugene Jarvis.

  • omg it's the infamous robotron 2084 review :O

  • ????

  • Mark, there was a plastic holder that 2 5200 controllers would slide in, there were 2 or 3 5200 games that used it.

You need to get an Atari XEGS - basically its an Atari home computer, but designed as a game system. The version of Robotron 2084 for Atari home computers is almost identical to the 5200 version, but it used 2600 controllers, and there is a holder for 2 2600 controllers to play Robotron 2084!

  • I had this for my Atari 800.

  • 1) Get the controller holder. It's cheap and works great

    2) Pick up a copy of Space Dungeon. It's the dual joystick "killer app" for the 5200. I don't think Space Dungeon appeared on another other console. Only the arcade and the 5200. A true lost treasure.

  • you should try apocalypse for PSone, its like a robotron clone but it has flamethrowers :)

  • Holly crap there's more sprites on screen then an NES can handle. How can you play this looks like mayhem!

  • This review inspired me to download this game on xbla. Just now. It's like... RETARDEDLY hard, but more addictive than cocaine.

  • Its been a while since you did a 5200 review it amazes me your controller still works

  • WHAT SONG is that at 0:05

  • Its stock music he has, you wouldn't even beable to find it.

  • lol I have it.

  • its a stock music

  • Wow, this is a good review.

  • 5200 even sounds much better than the 7800.

The Atari 400/800 computer had the classic joystick double holder. I had it, it sucked, they kept popping out. I think the 5200 double holder was much better.

  • I only have Dig Dug and Galaga or something.

  • wow uploaded 1 day ago and has 3000 views

  • They remade this game for the XBL Arcade awhile back....It's still incredibly difficult to get past wave 10. If you're into achievements more than gameplay, don't get this. But it was an excellent remake in my opinion.

  • they made a remake with a weird name

  • kinda reminds me of smash tv lol

  • What about the n64 version?

  • he has a review of that as well, check out the channel

  • he already reviewed that version

  • Damn the later levels look like hell.

  • gameplay looks very frantic ^_^

  • Geomatry wars is like this game.

  • more like the other way around...

  • Only difference is that it was made 15 years ago.

  • Pretty good translation! Never seen this before on 5200. I'm impressed.

  • there was a game like this for the playstation 1 :D i played it when i was a kid :P

  • did geometry wars copy robotron 2084???

    they look alike dont they

  • Hey Mark, I just sent you an e-mail recommending I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 - It's a Robotron 2084-like game with flamethrowers for $1 on Xbox 360 Community Games

  • Only $1?

  • lol

  • Amazing fucking game.

  • i have it for the 7800 and its hard with the controller

  • Lol. Apparently you didn't get the Chad Warren or Chad Warden or whatever it was reference.

  • Hello welcome to Earth we mean you no harm. Martian.

  • are you retarded?

  • 1. Talk like a human being.

    2. Atari basically set the standards for the game consoles we have today.

    3. Get a life and get off the internet

  • Couldn't have said so better myself :D

  • Chad Warden FTW

  • one problem with this game how are you surposed to get two atari 5200 controllers that work?

  • @1313131313113 yup, if you have the original model it's pretty impossible.

  • @Luigi84289 not counting how are you supposed to use TWO of them, when one is nearly impossible to use to begin with?!

  • @1313131313113 you dont. you buy an adapter and play it on your 2600.

  • @1313131313113 go out on ebay and buy a new better controller that works they make those now

  • @1313131313113 There's three right next to the Holy Grail.

  • .. Why on earth are people talking about Crysis in a fricken review about Robotron?

  • lol

  • You are lucky to have a 5200. I saw one once at a church fate sale and just before i picked it up this c**t got to it before me. The mo-fo got it and 10 or so games for $20.00. I was not happy as you could imagine. If i ever see him again....bang right in the kisser. =)

  • Ah the Atari. I actually have one somewhere in my house. I should really check what "version" it is. I wouldn't mind picking up this game if m Atari is a 5200 series.

  • Were they trying to give people seizures with this game??

I always wanted the 5200.. I settled with the 2600.

    Great reveiw!

  • Heh me 2...

  • umm.... I'm on a 1mbps connection that download at 130 kb/s and videos load fine, if not very fast, for me

  • What does your computer playing crysis on high have to do with your internet speed?

  • Everything if you are playing crysis on OnLive :P

  • 12 Mbs should be enough

  • oh god that level change thing is so seizuretastic xD

  • Easily one of the greatest games ever created.

  • lol ahahah

  • 0:55 = awesome sound effects

  • I remember playing this a long, long time ago... I was horrible at it (my first time), but it was still loads and loads of fun...

  • is anyone else having trouble loading this video?

  • I've been having youtube problems all day

  • Yes. Most youtube videos lately have been loading like poop :(

  • I thought I was the only one! Well, I hope youtube gets fixed.

  • Is this the only game to make use of both controllers for one player? I can't recall another.

  • Raiders of the Lost Ark for the Atari 2600 does as well I believe.

  • The 2 joystick control system sounds good.

I have this on Atari Lynx and Nintendo GBA, both of which look nice, but the control system on both of those is a serious let-down.

  • Mark: Yes, they did release a controller holder for holding the two joysticks together. It also works with Space Dungeon.

  • Right on man I will of course pick this version up if I ever get an Atari 5200. Awesome video.

  • I was going to PM him it was on the 5200 one day..... But i was lazy.

  • everytime I hear Robotron I think Robotech.

  • Yeah this looks exceptionally hard on the 5200. Wow!

  • This reminds me of geometry wars on the xbox 360 arcade

  • oooo yea i like that game

  • WTF! How did you get a working controller?

  • Lol. Let me guess you watched that AVGN video and that shaped your view on a system you had never used. I have never had any problems with my 5200 controllers,

  • I know, I know... I actually like the console.

  • Mark did say though in his earlier reviews that he has problems with his 5200 controllers that the buttons stick and don't work well. Maybe he got some new after market controller by now.

Just saying because if you watched any other 5200 review, he's made complaints about his controller from time to time ;P

  • the only GREAT thing about the 5200 controllers is that every chip that controls the input commands is inside the console and not the controllers, this made controllers cheaper to produce, added size to the console, but back then who cared, what's great about this is that you can mod an arcade joystick, or make one yourself, to work with the 5200, the only problem being that the 5200 analog joystick uses 640k pots instead of the today standart 10k, but you can tun it into a digital joystick

  • That's true... All older consoles are moddible in some way...

  • yeah that the beauty of it ^^ but the coolest thing is that even newer ones are, although it takes MUCH more work, BenHeck as shown us that, I also love two mods I found while browsing, of someone puting the entrails of a PS3 controller into a 360 controller shell and vice versa, very cool because it retains the wireless capabilities that adapter don't give, I was thinking of making a new case for my Dreamcast, but I don't have the money nor the tools at the time =(

  • this game tottaly triped me out when i was a kid!

  • Hot damn a classic game! I was starting to wonder, I was waiting for somethin' awesomely retro.

  • Looks Hard

  • vectrex>all

  • thefailguy666

  • i had llama tron for amiga 500. u have a amiga 500.some of my favorite games for it were it came from the desert, fiendish freddy,'Defender of the Crown ,Shufflepuck Cafe, chop n drop, speedball, and vindictator

  • Mark, you need to play the indie game "I made a game with zombies in it!" for the 360. I think you would like it a lot. The gameplay is very Robotron 2084-esque, has zombies, shotguns, and flamethrowers, and it only costs a dollar!

  • I'll stick to my Atari 7800 thank you x]

  • I wish he'd do more of them. I asked him in a private message on his old forums about it and he said he bought a box of N64 games at a garage sale and it had a couple turok games, quake and some sports and racing games. He said he'd review all of them....once he got around to it. He has a lot that he wants to do

  • You should review Rachet % Clank Future: Tools of Destruction some time btw :x

  • Thanks for your hard work Mark, keep the reviews coming... always enjoy em..

  • robotron 64 was awesome too

  • This game needs to be on Vectrex.

  • why everyone skips vectrex? the vectrex is the most advanced tecnology of all time!!!!

  • I still wonder today why there was no robotron game for the ColecoVision... and I don't know the answer.

  • cool

  • why doesnt he review some games from the N64 or Sega Dreamcast

  • He does sometimes

  • woah what does he say at 1:39 ?

  • humans not umans.

  • looks like mass chaos

  • I love how you review current popular games and then you review something from left field over twenty years ago. Do you really play all this stuff? Your collection of games must be crazy.

  • Looks like a great game.

  • Great Review

  • i thot you dident have a 5200

  • Yeah when he was YOUNG.

  • Yay classic game room! this was good but i can't wait for your Metal Gear Touch review later!!!

  • Did it ever come out on the 7800?

  • Have you ever reviewed any C64 games?

  • would it not be easier just to check his channel?

    idiot

  • Ugh, I forgot about the shitty quality when it's processing.

  • Robotron is a classic just like pac-man
