Clapton is a guitar genious, you judge his 50 year career because of a cover of a YMO classic wich MJ wrote additional lyrics to? Only a faux musically knowledgable moron would compare Clapton to YMO or Kraftwork...their legends in their own right. You dont like him because he hate immigrants and he's white.

Also, something else interesting I've noticed, unrelated to this song, is that the drum beat in MJ's "Billie Jean" (1982) is almost identical to the drum beat in YMO's "Computer Game" (1978). It seems to me that MJ was probably a fan of YMO's work in his pre-Thriller days, hence why he originally wanted to do a cover version of "Behind the Mask" for Thriller.

Just to make a few things clear:

This song was first written by Sakamoto and produced by YMO in 1978 for a Seiko commercial and then the band performed it live that same year. Then in 1979, Mosdell added some lyrics which Sakamoto sung through a vocoder. And then in the early 80s, Jackson added his own additional lyrics to it with Sakamoto's permission. And then in the mid-80s, Greg and Clapton both use MJ's additional lyrics for their cover versions of the song, with MJ uncredited by Clapton.

Michael Jackson added to the lyrics of the original Behind the Mask by YMO, recorded it, then Greg Phillinganes released "his" version of the Michael Jackson version, which was later picked up by Eric Clapton. The original has lyrics by Chris Mosdel.

Chris Mosdell wrote the original lyrics, he lives in Tokyo so he was right there to collaborate with them, check the writer's credits, Michael Jackson isn't named, stop being a thick douche

fuckin gobsmacked! got a cd single with remixes by the orb & 808 state from 1992 of some of there songs. had not the faintest they were responsible for this. its brilliant but so is the eric clapton version which i'm accustomed to
