If I had a chance to travel back in time, I would want to travel to the year 965. 965 is right in the middle of the Middle Ages, so it would give you the best sense of what the entire Middle Ages were like.
@GTXMAN Not sure. It's from an album by Anonymous 4--they do a lot of Medieval and minstral music, and a lot of a capella music, too. You might check out iTunes for it.
nice work. I have great respect for people like you who makes great stuff like this for people like me who wishes to be taken back in time. Thanx so much.
And can i know why you have come up with such a video? What is the motivation you had when you made this?
@jsmithbab6 It was for a class I'm teaching, but I'm so happy it caught on here! I wanted to use authentic images and music from the times and give as realistic and broad a sense of the times as I could.
I wished I lived in these times. A time without such technological destruction and dispute. Where things were of a simple life. Using true skills in the making.
Now we take everything for granted. I wish such advancements never came about in our existence today such was weaponry. It takes less skill to kill with a gun than a sword. I will live a primitive lifestyle setting aside all technology. The only thing I truly love is my ipod which holds music of the old times. Not modern.
id love to live in that day and age with that beautiful music. just get up in the morning listing to the birds chirping while i go for firewood or go hunting with my dog or maybe go read a book under a apple tree with my dog sleeping by my side and at night id listing to the cool breeze passing throw the trees as i fall fast sleep
The music is by Anonymous 4. Yeah, the medieval period was far more complex than we truly understand. I think it's unfair to apply modern thinking to medieval ways. They saw society totally differently from how we see it today.
Beautiful music <3 Even though times were hard then at least they didn't live in a world full of nonsense like the one we live in today. The planet was much healthier without all that pollution, technology is good but only to certain point. Kids now and days don't even go out that much because of video games and junk.Medieval life had it's advantages and disadvantages just like the 21st century does as well.I don't believe we live in a better era at all.
Despite what some poster state, Europe wasn't backwards during the medieval era. This is a commonly held myth. Life in ANY pre-modern society was hard, not just Europe. For example people weren't any more dirty than in any other era before the 20th Century. a little known fact, but Medieval towns had bath houses. It was widely held that bad smells caused illness, so people certainly didn't want to be smelly. In fact if you attended church, unwashed and in dirty clothes you could be fined.
People were prosecuted by town councils for emptying rubbish or sewerage onto the streets. Peasants had rights, in fact most of them worked fewer days than most people do today. Literacy levels were low by todays standards but, then again until the printing press made books widespread and cheap, there was nothing to read. People may not have had access to modern science and knowledge, but they were by no means stupid.
So you even considered it, haha. But in them times, you would be stuck there homeless with no money or food. Your just clouded by "all things hollywood". Oh well, no point trying to talk to an idiot.
then simply disconnect the computer and stop commenting back on videos. Technology problem is sorted. Then live out in the woods. Its not that hard once you break it down a little.
i know who you are, an american that wants to live in medieval europe, because he plays games and watches movies. When you figure out being in them times, you cant communicate with anyone, that would teach you a lesson.
The Medieval world may have been as bad as you say. But then again you will never know what could have been. So let us image our life in the middle ages any way we please.
Poverty, illiteracy, ignorance, cheapness of human life, lack of rights, torture, uncontrollable disease, brutal warfare, premature ageing, lack of health, any of the basic luxuries, far lower living standards, huge peasant contingent, not to mention the technology we have been gifted as having at our disposal...ugly women. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. You people would NOT have preferred to have lived back then trust me. Unless you were royalty life as a 1st world citizen now is a paradise by comparision.
thye drank beer instead of water to prevent illness. if you were a peasant workign land, you could grow your own food for your family, plus there was huge amounts of woodland teaming with wild animals to hunt. few people have these luxuries now. human rights mean nothing - i wouldnt be filmed every day by the goverrnment and if i encountered a thief there would be no delay in justice
@Glowwriter its no wheree near as ignorant as you make it sound,. They had a basic level of hygene. You should look into some of the literature of the times, and check out some of the history references. It was considered rude to be in a social gathering without a certain level of cleansliness. The peasants life was no where near the misonceptions most modern people have. Watch the "medeival lives" series for a fun look at it
@gunninlinguist I just want to state that just because you live comfortably does not mean you live well. Technology has brought our world to a stage which could easily destroy it.
@gunninlinguist You mean, we wouldn't have wanted to live in EUROPE back then. With the exception of Portugal and Spain (who'd received a basic education about things like soap and medicine from blacks and Arabs), it was pretty much the only continent on Earth this backwards.
@gunninlinguist but you gotta understand if we were in those times thats how the lifestyle would be. and all in all it was a much simpler way of living the only stress u had was finding food for the family.
I woulda loved to live in the medieval times...i mean..its so cool...except some diseases they couldnt cure back than..well anyways...everything is just awesome, actually takes skill to fight in war
Yeah it would be cool. You lived to a ripe old age of 55 if you were lucky. Woman had no rights, 98% of the population couldn't read, Disease and the black plague where rampant. You died with in hours. Catholic church had a monopoly on religion and would kill you if you objected. But yeah other than that it was awesome.
Parts of it I'd like to experience. I really love the dresses and headgear the women wore. But, I also care about hygiene, and couldn't deal with not bathing or having my teeth rot out (or see other people's rotten out teeth. Talk about bad breath!)
Rome was the centre of murder and brutality, intolerance and violence. The middle ages were actually a better time,at least people wouldn't go to the Colisseum to watch other people being torn apart by wild beast,if that is what you call "art".
The middle ages were NOT only a time when people died of nothing or slept with dogs! And not everyone was burned at the stake!
Come let's face it,we don't burn witches anymore but how many pedofiles and serial killers out there? We don't die of a cold but how many pople with AIDS and cancer die each day?You don't get whipped if you don't pay your taxes but how many people are still struggling to pay their bills??
Don't you have the minimum common sense understand this?
The number of people who got killed during the black deaths was half the population of Europe.
Whereas, the no. of people getting killed by aids and relatively newer diseases today is something that can be counted in numbers. Still you think things haven't changed from then? See, if you were a beggar back then and you child got fever he would have died. Now there are high chances of living. hope you get it.
@LaCarusiella We have modern medicine that has reduced death rates from illnesses and diseases FAR less than we did before. You realize the justice systems, police investigations and processes have increased so far that greatly reduces the criminals who are killers and pedophiles. Killing back then was common, you could get killed someone if someone thought you looked at them funny. We also live a lot longer than we do now. I see a gigantic difference.
Great pictures in a nice collection! Unfortunately, most people see in Medieval ages only the torments of Inquisitions, Crusades and pestilences, but this video reveals a little bit of those age's really atmosphere. Middle Ages were really the ages of faith, as you said.
Otherwise, I have also a question for you. What was the title of the 2nd song of this clip? I haven't found this song in album 'An English Ladymass'.
Um... the middle class didnt exist in this era... just a tip. I think that's the whole point of the feudal system, there is no middle class!
