France is undoubtably beautiful, no one can take that away from them. Tokyo is advanced way beyond any other city. London is historic, creative, exciting and welcoming. New York is... Well, I have nothing to say about NY, in my personal opinion it shouldn't even be in the top ten let alone the greatest city. It has no character, I'm sure many people love the city- that there opinion but I just think its dirty and criminal.

London is the best city in the world, the capital city in the world in my opinion and im not even from there. It hosts the language of the world, it is the trading capital of the world, the most well known city in the world after New York (Because of the movies;), the most visited city in the world, the home of football, the royal family, the Westend, Maddame Tusaudes and some of the most powerfull people on the planet.. the list goes on.

London should be 1, and by a considerable margin.

The criteria for this are as follows: Global financial centre, now surpassing NYC in volume of transactions; leading city for retail/shopping (£62 billion in annual sales versus £47 billion for NYC); property demand/prestige; tourism demand (leading by a big margin).

NYC and London are comparable in terms of fashion and cultural attractions, though London is generally more refined overall (and is less smelly/dirty.)

@Appletree34 I think they're also accounting for stock exchanges, which NYC has two of the largest, the NYSE and The NASDAQ exchange. Tokyo has the third largest exchange. London has the forth largest. However London has a huge banking industry where as Americas banking industry is spread out between NYC, Boston, LA, Chicago and San Fransisco. Considering America has those other cities where wealth is also spread, its pretty amazing NYC is ranked where it is.

Forbes ranking London ahead of NYC in late 2009 as global financial center has to do with the fact that trading in the CoL is now starting to match Wall Street in terms of volume of trades, the relatively worse financial situation of the USA following the September 2008 crisis; some may also argue NY's overreliance upon defective high frequency algorithmic trading and alleged market manipulation.

Look under Global Cities (Wikipedia) and there you will clearly see the breakdown from which this video is based. In all 3 categories NYC is rated number one. If you have an issue with that information then you have an issue with the person who posted this video and Wikipedia. I suggest you contact both of them to correct it if you believe they are in error.

Looks like their sources are somewhat suspect (The Mori Memorial Foundation, Foreign Policy - an obscure journal, and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs for example.) Judging from the feedback, it also looks like their methodology has come under harsh criticism, and uses defectively out-of-date information.

As a financier and entrepreneur, my own perspective is that all the smart money is now in a rush to move out of NY. The place is giving off signals like a wounded animal.

@Calenfeyn41 The Citi index, which you haven't listed, is reputable BUT has every motivation to over-represent New York in the financial stakes. The Global Cities Index, which you've mainly been critical of, heavily weights "political engagement", and seems to engineer NYC's largely symbolic role as UN base of operations as a disproportionate advantage. I agree though, the NYC 'lead' appears to be a largely sympathetic hold-over from the past, like a badly aging starlet in denial.

This is the key factor which every ranking index either ignores, trivialises, and glosses over in some form. Yet, the smart money knows fully well how dire the US economic outlook is over the foreseeable future, and that the situation faced by the major US financial/corporate bodies is irretrievable.
