Google you're doing it wrong! The community most interested with Chromebooks is the developer community! Yet there are no development tools for it. No FTP, no IDEs or compilers.

You are failing to satisfy your largest consumer base for the Chromebook.

Besides, people want more power not less power.

@privateabstract There are cloud based IDEs out there (respectable ones), most with built in FTP. A good drag n drop ftp client is essential though! It's not quite the finished article but it's a great step towards cloud based computing for the masses, imo.

All these comments from people who havent even used one. I'm on one right now and couldnt be happier with it. I can work anywhere, any time and always have my files on hand. Sensitive data is put on a usb drive. They werent exaggerating either, this thing is fast as hell. Obviously I have the wifi and 3g version.

@Pibikhen What are you talking about? Since all of the "programs" are in the cloud, your data is all still being stored and processed on some remote server somewhere. Storing files on a USB stick is just creating another copy, not keeping the data secure from prying eyes

@RJForce If you had used one then you would know not everything has to be 'online'. Those statements are coming from people who have no clue what they're on about. You can store everything 'offline'. Just for example: I recently developed the backend of a site with an online IDE without saving anything in the cloud and put it all on a SD card, which was handed over to the client. Hell, saving it to the SSD on the chromebook would probably be safer than saving it on a mac or pc if your paranoid..

Anything you upload to the cloud, you don't own and can be legally taken from you, denied or deleted (and looked at without your permission)

I like the idea of Chromebooks but I do NOT like the price. For that price I'll have a normal laptop which is more flexible thanks. Therefore I'll never have one, so they're totally irrelevant to me. Makes you wonder if they actually did any market research before developing it or they just made it because it seemed pretty cool.

Its nothing like one.

It's called a Chromebook because it mixes Google Chrome with a Notebook.

Its all internet app based, everything is in the cloud, so it runs faster and more stable than a normal computer. It doesn't have the perks of a normal laptop, but its meant to be for people who use the internet for everything, which will probably take over a majority of the PC market someday

@gentleuterus It has offline access you derp. Anyway, the idea of it is as a netbook? So it's primary use is going to be on the internet? You can make your docs offline, compose the emails etc. Then just connect to the net when you send/upload them.

And for, many, the internet is their primary usage of a computer.
