Everyone is confused by this but you have to read the text on the trailer to really understand. Kojima sama is basically implying that you don't have to fight alone anymore and can have sneaking operations/battles with 1-3 of your buddies.

You could say in a sense it's just a symbolic joke for Big Boss, Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, and Solidus Snake - but don't get confused for the 4 characters actually being them.

It's just co-op.

if you want to play in order and still make sense of it play mgs3 first then peacewalker then portable ops (and possibly Acid) then mg1, 2, and 4. it will make more sense that way if you like your mindfucks to be minimal.

Actually I purposely left out Metal Gear Solid Rising since Kojima sama really has referred to it as a spin-off in a sense. And besides which, if the story of Rising is about Raiden, well then it really wouldn't fit in the Metal Gear Solid series since the Metal Gear Solid series mainly tell the story of Big Boss and the 3 clones of Big Boss. (mainly Solid Snake and Liquid Snake).

Indeed, play the other MGS games first. The plot of MGS is very complicated, and you can only get the full experience by playing the other games(which are fantastic games anyway). The first MGS is on the PS1. MGS 2 and 3 are both on the PS2. MGS 3 is a prequel to the series, as well as Peace Walker, both following the character of Naked Snake/Big Boss, rather than Solid Snake(MGS 1,2 and 4). And then MGS 4 is on PS3.(the conclusive game to the series.)

I've thought about this trailer a lot, especially the part with the seemingly four Big Bosses. From what we all know from Metal Gear Solid, there was only one Big Boss, and his clones only came about after the Les Enfants Terrible (LET for short) project in the late 70s. Since Peace Walker takes place before LET, what we are seeing in the trailer, may be a dream sequence, in which Big Boss' separated personalities are being shown.

Actually, Peace Walker takes place 2 yrs after LET. LET took place during 1972. Which means Solid and Liquid are 2 yrs old during peace walker(which takes place in 1974). But, I do like your Big Boss separate personalities theory. Makes sense since Kojima said that the 4 Snakes are somehow involved with the main story.
