The value they add, is that they provide cheap labor that generates a lot of economic value. When they work for 1/2 or 2/3 of what a legal immigrant/citizen will, their employer saves tons of money, which he can use to expand his business.. all of which he pays more into the county/state/fed tax coffers for. Consumers come out on top too.

I don't know the specific states, just saying that its an equation that isn't measured solely by services received.

TB screening, free clinics for check ups.. stuff that spots probs before they end up in an ER costing tens of thousands. ESL teachers to help kids assimilate. Teen intervention to catch substance abuse, teen pregnancy. Outreach for domestic abuse, etc.

Sounds like a handout, but cheap compared to jailing, maintaining a 700 mile fence, etc.

Well, its looking like the taxation will fall on the small percentage of people who hold 90% of the nation's wealth. As the economy changes, we'll see if that sticks.

If you buy the numbers that the Admin and CBO support, reform w/ a public option will only come to around $30+ billion over ten years, the rest coming from reduced costs/efficiencies, competition, etc.

None of the health care bills cover illegals.

That 'immigrants take more than they give' is kind of a misnomer. Their cheap labor generates far more economic gain than they take in resources, plus many are taxed in their paychecks.

I've worked in food service, and you can't run a restaurant w/o them. You can't find 10 responsible Americans that will work an 11 hour shift till 1am, for $8/hr. Maybe now that the economy is changing, which is what we're seeing, and is the reason that immigration is declining.

I'm for smart regulation in a lot of areas, including regulating their non-insurable terms. What I am tired of, is seeing the discussion reduced to misleading simplicities -- 'people who aren't insure are lazy', 'if medicare isn't breaking even, why do they think this will?'

Simple answer - because the people on Medicare are the elderly, who consume the vast majority of heath service.
