@joetubealong It saw very little if any air combat over Europe. The US Navy and Marines were the only American forces to use the F4U, and I'm not sure that the ones the Brits had were used in Combat in Europe. The F4U has the exact same engine as the P-47, and in the hands of a competent pilot, could hand almost any enemy aircraft his ass. Of course that could be said for almost any fighter craft. It's a nice "What would be", to see a F4U vs. a FW-190 or Me-109, however...
84 people watched this and thought it was about RAM memory and had nothing to do with warbirds.. i get 100th like! was expecting motion.. not just stills but thanksanyway :)
@paranoid19851 True that, but man, even in a still picture the old Corsairs look mean and lean. :) I hope they keep those machines flying from here to eternity.
@wraithgard You are correct. The yellow nosed is a F4U-1D. 2 easy ways to identify...1) F4U-1D has a 3 bladed prop 2) F4U-1D has no small intake at the bottom of the cowling. Awesome vid though.
@welcometotheshow713 You are VERY misinformed. The japs had some of the best trained and most experienced pilots in WWII, and the zero was pretty bad too. @emersonreid5 The f4u IS the most awesome aircraft of WWII.
@emersonreid5 In a dogfight with the f4u, the 51 would win within 30 seconds. it could turn in a much smaller radius. The corsair had easier pray. They fought unskilled jap pilots. The P-51 fought much more equal opponents. It took on and beat the me-262 for gods sake. The corsair is still a great plane but had to dogfight with much lees experienced pilots.
That would be why the F4U was never sent to Europe. It's a Boom-'n'-Zoomer, not a turn fighter. What better theater to zoom in than over water instead of varying terrain.
@TheOriginalEAGLE The Corsair didn't serve in Europe because it was being used originally by the Marines, who also did not serve in Europe. The P-47 Thunderbolt was another "boom and zoom" fighter that was a match for the FW190 and ME109 over 20,000 feet.
@welcometotheshow713 at first the jap pilots where the ones with all the skill. the main problem with the zero was that it would catch fire easy. the plane could not take any hits. i do agree that the german pilots where very skilled. they did not rotate home after so many missions like the american pilots did. at the end of the war they had very little skilled pilots left.
Those were the better days of air combat, when you didn't have one plane that could take out an entire city with one missile from hundreds of miles away. You had to duel eachother 1 on 1, and the aircraft were real hotrods.
P38, P41, P47, P51, Hellcat, Corsair... my god the Americans made some killer airplanes.
One of those Corsairs is an early model while the other is an F4-u4. The difference lies in the props. One's a 3 swinger, the other's a 4 swinger. Good photos never the less. Very beautiful aircraft. The Whistling Death!
You can hardly call a Corsair beautiful :) She's a long nosed mean nasty beast that oozes the vibe of "I will kill you in an instant, whether your my enemy or my inattentive pilot". My dad flew them in Korea, and she is one of my favorite warbirds, how's that for critical distance lol. Spits and Ponies are beautiful, Corsair are just plain awesome!!!
Awesome 'plane. My favourite warbird as well. Oh - and congrats to sewallm60, who wrote the dumbest thing I've ever read on YT - and that's saying something. Big ups, moron.
One particularly interesting kill was scored by a Marine Lieutenant R. R. Klingman of VMF-312 Checkerboards, over Okinawa. Klingman was in pursuit of a Kawasaki Ki-45 when his guns jammed due to the gun lubrication thickening from the extreme cold. He simply flew up and chopped off the Ki-45's tail with the big propeller of the Corsair. Despite missing five inches (127 mm) off the end of his propeller blades, he managed to land safely after this ramming attack. He was awarded the Navy Cross.
This symphony was composed by Antonin Dvorak. It's his ninth (9) symphony, the fourth (4th) and last movement. The symphony is nicknamed: "From The New World". A good version by Herbert von Karajan is on Youtube.
People have posted here that the music in this clip is from the composer Antonin Dvorak in Z Noveho Sveta. But when I listen to this track I don't hear the music from the first 18 seconds of this video, what gives?
there will be another airworthy B-29 soon another CAF chapter has one in nebraska, and I saw FiFi just about a year ago she was undergoing some heavy duty maintance
to all who think that the Corsair was make for the US is wrong. It was made for the British first as a navy fighter. Then the british rejected the plane for the sea-version of the Spitfire. Then the US Navy pick it up as a heavy fighter but after many training problems it was handed down to the Marines Corp who figured out how to fly them, and the rest is history. VMF-214 Black Sheep. Simper Fi. Hamm336
Sorry hamm the Corsair was made for the US Navy. Initially they rejected it due to the long nose causing visibility problems when landing on carriers. It then went to the US Marines who operated it from land bases, and to the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, who figured out how to land it on carriers. In the light of its success with the US Marines, the US Navy then adopted British practice and operated it from carriers.
bogroll is right. It was in service a while before it was carrier certified. Besides, the corsair is a purpose built plane designed for boom and zoom tactics against slow but highly maneuverable planes. German planes weren't slow so there is no way the brittish would have seen the corsair as a viable option. They took some because they were cheap and in quick supply due to the us navy rejection.
The Corsair was /is a great aircraft. It was designed as an carrier based aircraft. for the US. However, it was given to the Marines as a land bassed fighter because the tall & springy undercariage made the accident rate quite high with the Navy.
The corsair had a huge nose (for the huge motor) and a high angle of attack on landing. The drawback was it had very poor visibility on landing. So bad, it was given to the marines as a landbased plane until they could solve the issues of landing it on a carrier. I could be wrong, I think it was the british that realised if you circled the carrier for the approach (as appose to coming in straight and blinded by the nose) it could be landed safely. From then on, it was carrier based.
some more fucking idiots the corsairs were designed to fly off of carriers the wings folded to allow more parking on an carrier the fucking limeys had nothing to do with nothing
If you're thinking Battle of Britain, the answer is no. Otherwise, yes the British did use the Corsair, in fact it was the Brits who taught us Americans how to land the Hose Nose onto an aircraft carrier, before then the Corsair was used as land based aircraft by the Marines.
I attended Camden Military Academy in Camden S.C. There is an air field right behind the campus. During the early years of WWII the Camden Military Academy was used by the British RAF as a flight school. After the war it became Carlisle Military and then Camden Military Academy. It was just neat going to a school with that kind of a history to it.
yes they did actually the british fleet in the pacific used them and they british were the first to let this baby take off from a carier after that they learned the americans how to do it the british had an other name for it just google it and you will find more info

If he took of UK airfields, he killed facist Germans. If he did this, he took of in a Thunderbold, a Mustang or a Lightning.
