The sound is straight off the album, the TV video is a pretty good job of syncing to the original recording, which is why the picture appears to be slightly out of sync to the music. The recording is great, and it's nice to see Don appearing to sing it live. Anyway, whoever married picture and sound, I think they did a nice job, although not perfect. Pretty tricky editing.
@Delta1 Sorry, but that's HOGWASH. On the video, Don's alternating between treble and bass strings. The intro is only on the treble strings!
Listen to it in parallel with the original song on the record; they're IDENTICAL...every lick from Don and Tom. If this were the soundtrack to this video, it would be the only one in history to duplicate the original song note-for-not and in perfect sync.
Don was a very very talented musician. I know he and Buck were very close but I wonder what if Don had gone on and chosen startdom for himself. I mean he had the voice, the look and ability, just a thought.
I was at a News Years Eve Party at the El Cortez Hotel in San Diego in the 60's and at Midnight Buck pulled me up on the stage and he kissed every woman in the house and would pass them to me and I would pass them to don, At intermission I had a couple of drinks with buck so we were feeling good.
Looks like a lip-sync, which was quite common back then. Not a negative comment, simply an observation. He was Buck's favorite singer and musician, so there is not much more I can say about the guy. I'm impressed by the strength of his voice as well. Thanks for the upload!
@sawmillcountry Bob Morris is my Dad. I watched the video and it doesn't look like him, but is was a long time ago. I wish they would have done a close up. My dad wrote, Buckaroo and Made in Japan for Buck Owens and Yes, we are from Hasty Arkansas and I live in Harrison. I lost my dad in '81 to cancer.
I was 14 the year Don died,I cried like a baby,Yes i was 14 and listened to Country music, and still do to this day. I had parents who turned me onto Buck and Don at an early age and i just loved the sound.
This type of Country Music was never reinvented, It was truly a one of a kind sound.
fignew1 I like this, catchy, cute songs are good, especially with good string back up. I knew Bonnie helped write, but didn't know she had helped on this one. she was a really nice person. Had a good personality. Nice tall willowy gal. Thanks for rounding up this to start my nite off. Oh to be that age again. DDR is the best. Buck sure picked the best and had him for 14 yrs.
Awesome! Does anyone remember Don Rich singing with Buck Owen's brother about Jesse James robbing the train? I can't remember it well, but Don sings about a Lady that was about to get kissed by Jesse James and a man stands up to defend her and the Lady says, "shut-up and let Jesse rob the train".
Does anyone know where I can download this song for a cd, not the video. I've tried ITunes and Amazon. Don was great. His personality shines through in every video. He would have had much more fame and recognition had he lived longer.
In my opinion, based on viewing videos from the 1960's era of Buck Owens and the Buckaroos, Don Rich's talent, youthful good looks and humble personality was 80% of successfully selling the 'Bakersfield sound' to the public.
Just wondering if Buck looked after Don's family after his untimely passing.
@canusa1000 I wouldn't doubt it at all because Buck Owens had a tendency to look out for his family and close friends.Money only meant so much to him.
If Keith Richards were to die, would have Mick have been able carry on the torch. Probably not. Same thing for Buck when his great partner Don Rich died.
JImmy Burton define "chicken pickin", no one before , or after them ,can say they invented their style of get down twang. Don`s harmonies defined honky tonk harmony....... I have 3 fender (left handed )telecasters because of them.... and , as they say, "it don`t get no better than this."
Don Rich was certainly one of the greatest, but he probably could have made it on looks alone. All he hd to do was stand there and smile. I had never heard Wham Bam until today, but I love it. He was taken much too soon. Still love you Don.
i had never heard of don rich until today..he was a good singer....i'm impressed.....you always wonder why some guys MAKE IT..and others get by passed...
Man how can you not know about Don Rich if you listen to Buck Owens at all...Don was just as much a part of the "Bakersfield Sound" as anybody..killed in a motorcycle crash in July of 1974.
well i grew up in eastern canada where buck owens was king..but you heard about buck and merle and charlie pride but not any of the pickers in their bands or anything but i do know a great singer when i hear one and Don Rich was tops in my book...thanks for the comment Steve.
I though I'd just put this out there. Youtube Username Lerb21 makes sparkle Telecasters like Don's except his prices aren't ridiculous. I had him make me one a while ago and it is a top notch guitar. It gets that big Don Rich twang.
Wham Bam, Love's Gonna Come Knockin' At You Door, Round Hole Guitar, I'll Be Swingin' Too and I'll Lay It On The Line are al great songs. I love Buck and Don!
A great part of his sukses is because of his best friend DON RICH. except an extra-ordinairy guitar-/banjo-/violin etc-player he has just a B,O, this typical 'Bakersfield' voice. Plus and not least: He is the most friendly abd loveble musician I ever saw.....
There's a couple of speculations. One is that back in the early 60's all strings were very big and hard to bend. They tuned down to make the strings easier to bend. Another is that it was easier for Buck & Don to sing if the key was lower. Another rumor is that Tom Brumley's predecessor sabotaged the band's steel guitar so that the string would constantly break. This could be alleviated by tuning down. Finally, it is also though that the guys liked the lower sound (guitars resonate more in Eb).
No, this video was not recorded live. As the video description states, "...cut back on December 29, 1964...", two years before the Buck Owens Ranch even existed. When the song was recorded in the studio, Bob Morris was playing bass.
Now i'm really confused as to who is singing this song. Is it Don singing or Don Lipsinking to the Buck Owens record? I have the track on Bucks album "I've got a tiger by the tail" and it sounds exactly the same as this video.
What you're hearin' comin' outta your speakers isn't what Don Rich was singin' and pickin' on March 15, 1966. Whut your hearing is from the Tiger by the Tail Album. I find it to be superior to the live version anyway. Also, because I'm just using the video from the ranch shows, I'm not liable to be sued.
Thanks for clearing that up. It's what I kind of figured. You did a great job of dubbing that audio to coincide so closely with the video, you must be in the business!
