Alabama just had it's first two suspected cases of swine flu and took immediate action. Schools were closed, investigators are on the scene and it seems like our state is far more prepared than what people are complaining about. Our state is largely Republican and we don't need a dime in federal assistance for this so what gives with all this bitching? The Federal Government should be prepared for a pancemic and/or epidemic as a standard part of its civil defense function. Unfortunately, 'Homeland security' doesn't see it this way. all the more reason to go back to the cold war civil defense model where they actually prepare for these things, rather than spending their time on logos and whether or not everyone uses proper 'positive' terminology. Just because there's a pandemic doesn't make it wrong to oppose pandemic-funding. Preparing for an eventual outbreak is something that should have been done beforehand. I even heard someone said that they were well prepared to handle a pandemic so why do they all of the sudden need 780 million in stimulus money? I think they have a case of the omg-I-also-want-free-money-flue.

First let me say that the economic stimulus pack was supposed to be for the economy. That said, what the hell was almost a billion dollars added for possible pandemic preparations? Did someone see this coming? Maybe because someone created this? Conspiracy? Let's also face this reality. More people died from the common flu even in Mexico than have died from this new swine flu. So what next, are you gonna agree with conspiracy nuts who say we created this flu to make Rep's look bad?

I expect ANY president to anticipate any possible threat to our health and safety and have some sort of plan to protect us.

I do. I think Fox does a good job in reporting the news fairly, but it's kind of hard for you to realize that when you are watching MSNBC, Comdey Central and CNN for your news. People who think Fox is some kind of monster are usually have a pretty skewed to the left worldview. I beleive Fox is center-right like most of the country which is why its ratings are way better than CNNs and MSNBCs.

The Federal Government should be prepared for a pancemic and/or epidemic as a standard part of its civil defense function. Unfortunately, 'Homeland security' doesn't see it this way. all the more reason to go back to the cold war civil defense model where they actually prepare for these things, rather than spending their time on logos and whether or not everyone uses proper 'positive' terminology. And I'm not convinced that the current swine flu rises to that level.

Fema has been around in concept since the late 70's, but it wasn't until the Bush administration that it replaced the concept of civil defense under Homeland Security with the idea of 'emergency management'. One of the first things that was done was to replace the logo and terminology as being to militaristic. One of the key issues of the GOP is the economy. In fact, it is one of a few issues that they can beat Democrats on if they played their cards right, because they are losing on issues of culture and social welfare. What strikes me as odd is that despite how prudent the Republicans promote themselves as being with respect to the economy, they somehow seem oblivious to the fact that a good economy is grounded in a healthy workforce. So it behooves the government to invest heavily in health care.

Republicans really seem to have a dog eat dog everyone for themselves mentality.... "Leave me alone, I dont care if you die and the world blows up as long as the government doesnt tax me or force people to help each other...."
I understand that this has very little to do with a stimulus package.... But my sentiments still remain.

Its quite true, actually. It took Roosevelt blackmailing the Supreme Court to get them to institute his famous social programs. Those simple measures gave people so much more support than there had been... far fewer sick and poor left to fall through the cracks of society.
