Native Louisvillians do not say loo-ie-ville. Yes, that is the proper way to say it though. Natives say, Lou-a-vul (or something very similar). If you were not raised here or raised by parents who aren't from here, chances are, you will throw the "ie" into it. It just the same as saying New Orleans, if you are from there or not you will say it differently.
I lived INSIDE of Louisville for 13.5 years and have always pronounced it like "Loo-ie-ville." I lived by Shelbyville Road and Hurstbourne, Mall St. Matthews area. I would say the large majority (only a small few didn't) pronounced it like I. I know that different areas in Kentucky and Indiana have different accents, so perhaps its those different accents that influence how one says "Louisville"? I don't know. Someone should do a study on that....
I get angry when people look at us like we're idiots when pronounce it "Loo-ville". Two people had told me that anyone who doesn't pronounce it "louie-ville" are ignorant. Coming from people who have never stepped foot in the the city. I'm from Southern Indiana and know that's how we say it.
I'm from nearby in Southern Indiana, oustide of Owensboro, KY, and we all say lulvul. Looeyville sounds silly and makes me cringe everytime I hear it.
@clineohnine: you must be an outsider because we (from louisville) do not say looeyville, infact it really annoys us when people consistently think that, and that we dont wear shoes. WE DO!
@Msjennayo Bullocks! I've lived here almost my entire life and strongly prefer the more sophisticated pronunciation over the provincial one, largely because of what I have to hear constantly.
I'm from Louisville and I pronounce it 'Lou-a-vul'. But technically it is pronounced 'Loey-ville' because the city was named after one of the King Louies.
im going to show this to everyone since they always ask me where is luhville? i wont have to say looeyville anymore lol.
its just like versailles, ky. any outsider would say the french pronounciation, but obviously its versailles, just like its spelled. the "s" isnt silent.
I from Luhvul and live in MD. I tell folks around here that Looeyville must be in MARY LAND! They seem to like that explanation of the "proper" pronunciation!
LOL Theres 3 things that annoys me when living here in Louisville 1-people assuming that i just like country music. On the contrary I hate it! 2-People asking about the blue grass. It just looks blue from the sky but it's still green people.3-People assuming I live on a farm. It is a CITY, I never been to a farm.Louisville is a great city and comparable to some of the most popular in the America. Now people will see the real Luhville! (No I don't own a cowboy hat so dont ask that either lmao!)
Ok. It is luhville, when you live there you know it. It is not loooeyville, maybe if you live in NY people say it like that, but thats incorrect. P.S. Not all of us are banjo strummin low educated hillbilles, that IS a stereotype. Luv the video
