Anna is as good as callas, caballe, Sutherland, trebaldi and better than others. She must be tired after this great performance. May she live forever.
I like her better here than in Salzburg... she's more relaxed, more confident in her technique, and somehow more comfortable with the acting she chooses to do. Maybe it was the staging??? Either way, this is some of her best work and I like her approach to this role.
Took all my doubts away of her being the best of the singers I have ever heard, and what's more she is a beauty of the first order and a convincing actress. Excuse me while I listen to the rest of her works you
One thing I've never liked is the lack of dynamics. That's something these roles in particular call for, am I right? I wish she had focused her career around the Russian repertoire. I loved her in all the Prokofiev operas but she doesn't do those anymore.
@bibi5027 No way! She omitts one bar, to prepare for the high e flat. Many singers do so, but Callas for instance rejected this code of praxis, and I think, it ruins the tension they've built up before!

CharlotteinWeimar... Ottima risposta.
Oh I didn't know that you meant mentioning particular names as 'arguments'. And I've seen a lot of people express their both like and dislike without citing 'facts.' Some people just understand what they're reading without needing to get the facts, because they have a background. Why aren't you demanding that people cite 'arguments' and 'facts' when they like something? Expressing an opinion is not an 'argument' as I've already mentioned.
@piax00 I'm not talking about music theory at all, I am talking about listening to music and different people and understanding the entire opera and how verdi composes music. Callas' interpretation is one of the tops, Anna Moffo's is up there, Freni is wonderful, even though her voice is not proper for it, Olivero's was just amazing in terms of technique, it gave me the chills, Tebaldi's may have been too heavy for it, she had to transpose it down.
@piax00 There are countless others who have done a better job, even Netrebko has done a better job than this video. A singer sings differently on different nights. Be rational -- most opinions are based on facts and no one owes you an 'argument' or 'fact' when they are expressing an opinion. Learn about social behavior. This is just a forum, not a classroom, or a panel for a dissertation.
If you don't like Netrebko, that is your right. Please present valid arguments and back up your arguments with facts if you're going to express your dislike! Some of you are just blasting her without presenting credible arguments.
@arpeggio1358 just read the score, listen to the tempo of this rendition and to how this aria has been performed and interpreted by countless genius sopranos, maestras, etc. Read books about this aria. I am not 'arguing', so I don't need to present 'arguments'. I am basing my impressions on what I know. And I never said I don't like Netrebko. I think she was smashing in another production of La Traviata in Austria, she is a great actress with lots of charisma and energy and electricity.
@piax00 The main thing in singing is if it MOVES YOUR HEART as a listener or not! Reading the score and countless books written about how great singers of the past sang it and how somebody thinks it should be sung isn't so important at all. Many people can not even know what notes mean and how to read them to FEEL the music as it's PRACTICE and NOT THEORY! It's your right if you don't like Netrebko in this aria. But for us to understand your point of view you should find better MUSICAL ARGUMENTS
@piax00 You only say what Netrebko does wrong. But who in your opinion sings this aria absolutely right and why? Any names? Otherwise it's not a constructive criticism, just like :"She is terrible here because I don't like it"! And whom do you like?
@arpeggio1358 I just think her singing of certain, a lot of repertoire, in fact, leaves much to be desired. And in this particular production in this video, I just don't think it is being done right. Some conductors will allow this change in tempo; obviously the one is Austria did not.
@piax00 In Austria???? It was performed in St.Petersburg in 2003, conducted by Valeriy Gergiev who knew millions times better then you (asshole) how to perform La Traviata!

no need to mangle verdi to give meaning to the aria. the meaning is already there, no need to change tempo, or change the whole texture altogether. it only 'cheesifies' it; there is an illusion that this is modernizing. sorry this is wrong. this is taking way too much liberty with the score. it is taking liberty to cast her in this role in the first place; she is not a coloratura. a score should not be mangled to suit the voice type. this is 19th century italian, not 20th century french.

Very creditable job and good acting. I like the darker colors of her voice and FYI, this isn't a recording - it's a live performance! Part of the thrill is in the execution and sometimes we have a bit of trouble (that's a high D by the way). It's not where you're going but how you get there. She's an exciting and watchable performer, with an interesting and darker timber to her voice and excellent color dispersion across the entire register. Bravo!
Mehhh...nothing special. No offense, but I am sure she has made a career more on the fact that she is very pretty and a good actress, than because of her singing. Her tones are not pure at all and that final high tone is pretty risky don't you think?

OH MY GOSH! The aria befor "Sempre LIbre" was the most beautiful thing on Earth! Such passion and that fuzzy feeling you get that you can't explain when you hear true art performed at it's best.
Traviata - Ms. Netrebko displayed ample power, coloratura bravura with a marvelous tone Having recently heard Natalie Dessay sing Sempre Libera at the Met Gala, one was impressed by the legato nature of Netrebko's portray in contrast to Dessay's intentional staccato, fragmented phrasing interpretation. Having also seen photos of Fleming in her current Violetta at the ROH, one can only marvel at Netrebko's resilience, endurance and commitment to bel canto opera.
For all Netrebko's self-appointed critics - here you go Netrebkos voice is evenly produced, effortless, sharp and clear and is matched with a technique that loves every note precisely and fully in its proper length and dynamic range. Her pianissimos are thrilling, and her rapid passagework almost flawless.

In spite of her technical limitations and poor coloratura, I like her. She has a nice and warm voice, reaches rather high notes, and she's very pretty and a fine actress.
@rudy3331 Rudy Vallee, we slander Annushka because a band of " those kind of guys " slander the Great Callas. Tell Filaredo, and Vandrops how much you hate them. Once they stop, I stop. I would smash them down to the ground if I could, but they were afraid of me. Filaredo hangs with a boy named Evgeny Kissen...what a pair!! WOO HOOO!!!!!!
i just like the way she entertains, i do hope she regains her figure. i am rudolph valentino not vallee, although i do have most of vallee's recordings, apart from the ones where he sang with the :bing Boys' in paul whitemans band
Anna the SOUBRETTE!!! Send her back to the farm so she can sing to the little piglets. She can call her little Tiago in to suckle. Anna the singing sow!!
Vandrops, Annushka is on her way down. She cancels a lot. She has gotten fat. She gets bad reviews sometimes. She just wants to hang with her piglet Tiago. She does not have expert technique. She can NEVER be La Divina. Anna must go back to the farm.
Filaredos, my great feceal matter to your mouths. Your names are stupid and irrelevant. My symbolic shit to your mouths, and that of Annushka. Inhale it fully.
Filaredo/Belman, as long as you continue to diss LaDivina, Annushka gets symbolically butt-fucked. I don't care how long it takes, one month, one year, ten years, I'll fight you to the death, you filthy scumbag.
GOOD NEWS dear ANNA fans!!!! Striker capitulates! The automated production of feces is over. He's a nervous wreck because the great Filaredo gang has destroyed the white knight on his black donkey. Striker, you are alone in a hopeless plight!Go home and lick your wounds!!! Hoohooohaahaahhhaaa..... what a wonderful world...!!! Striker is only a picture of misery.....LOL

I've to translate this phrase of numetutelare: "her B flat is always a an half D."
Yes, or she invented a new musical scale, or she wants to convince us that the greatest soprano of XX-XXI century is always a minor-sixth flat.
These are Italian "Opera experts". May be this is the reason because Italy is the last musical country in the world?

OH MY GOSH! The aria befor "Sempre LIbre" was the most beautiful thing on Earth! Such passion and that fuzzy feeling you get that you can't explain when you hear true art performed at it's best.
violinistx100 1 year ago
She can be so beautiful without being snobbish. She is so folksy, I like that, and she sings great and she looks the part. Wonderful.

Why do all Violettas wear the same kind of dress?????

Maybe off-shoulders is the style in those days.
lubomierz180 2 years ago
She wears the best among all Violettas.
baird292 2 years ago
It is a period piece. Dressing in that way adds a touch of 'Realism' to the such an Opera whenever it is performed.
I do so wish Operas should be kept and represented in their original Language and time frame

know what I mean!!!! I'm sure Evgeny sits on Filaredo's lap, when he plays Chopsticks.
mtnmanjt 2 years ago
@rudi3331
the boy named Kissin is the greatest classical pianist today and filaredo is one of the smartest music agents in europe.
Striker sit in a nuthouse!! He mow gras, cut firewood and thinks, Maria Callas was a great singer......LOL:)))).
That's the reason why he wears a straitjacket.

In spite of her technical limitations and poor coloratura, I like her. She has a nice and warm voice, reaches rather high notes, and she's very pretty and a fine actress.

how twrrible to hide between a mack and slander a very nice lady as anna
rudy3331 2 years ago
@rudy3331 Rudy Vallee, we slander Annushka because a band of " those kind of guys " slander the Great Callas. Tell Filaredo, and Vandrops how much you hate them. Once they stop, I stop. I would smash them down to the ground if I could, but they were afraid of me. Filaredo hangs with a boy named Evgeny Kissen...what a pair!! WOO HOOO!!!!!!
striker9410 2 years ago
i just like the way she entertains, i do hope she regains her figure. i am rudolph valentino not vallee, although i do have most of vallee's recordings, apart from the ones where he sang with the :bing Boys' in paul whitemans band

Anna the SOUBRETTE!!! Send her back to the farm so she can sing to the little piglets. She can call her little Tiago in to suckle. Anna the singing sow!!
striker9410 2 years ago
Nice fairy-tale Striker.
filaredo 2 years ago
Vandrops, Annushka is on her way down. She cancels a lot. She has gotten fat. She gets bad reviews sometimes. She just wants to hang with her piglet Tiago. She does not have expert technique. She can NEVER be La Divina. Anna must go back to the farm.
