I sear I hear Dolly Parton as well? Dolly sings ok, but should stick to writing music. Vocally, she ain't in the same league as Harris, Ronstadt, Gale, Winette etc. I know this is like a writer saying he don't like Shakespeare, but that's my honest opine! Thanks for this track. Nice and 5&.
One more technical question: The poster of this video, or at least the YouTube computer which tracks the information, says he joined YouTube "1 year ago" and yet he added the video nearly TWO years ago, August 2006. How is that possible? Can you post a video before you join? I didn't think that was the way it worked. Any comments?
This is a classic video, both in song and acting by legendary character actor Harry Dean Stanton. I don't know which is more heartbreaking, the lyrics or the lined, lonely face of Stanton as he sits at the dining table with only his dog now as a companion.
One technical question about the video: there's a jarring jump in the rhythm during the scene where Harry is dancing with the broom. Afterwards, the lip-sync seems to be off between the sountrack and the singers. Anybody know why?
Hey Poster, you might want to put Dolly Parton's name in the title, since it is her on lead vocals. This is from the Trio album. Trio means three. You need to get the simple stuff right please. Thanks.
I'm so glad I found this. Gives me a new song to play on my guitar, and such pleasure to see these ladies again. Ol' Harry Dean dancin' with his broom is great.
This song rocks!!! Thanks for posting this; you are doing a great service by turning on new generations to it, and bring sweet memories to the rest of us!!!
I just lost my husband of 39 years to stomach cancer. The words of this song ring utter truth in my brain and heart. DAMN the pain of grief!! It really really hurts!!!
thanks very much for the correction. I had seen the Monroe name on the song at other sources, but you're right. I see the O'Bryan name on the Trio album. Why is Bill Monroe listed as author at other sources? Thanks.
Bill Monroe over the years more than likely wrote more than 500 songs, a lot of which were under other names he would use. He could write a new instrumental for you in 2 minutes that no one has heard. Could be they thought it was just another pen name.
No, DietColaWar, not only did I find his dancing with a broom *not* scary, but it was extremely poignant. Here was a widower aching for his lost wife and, while carrying out a mundane chore of sweeping, is suddenly moved by the memories of when they would go dancing together. Harry Dean Stanton, rightly called a "great character actor" by an earlier poster, delivers a powerful and hearbreaking performance in this video.
To rockyracune, I was thinking the exact same thing about this song. It is so bittersweet. Dolly & EmmyLou are the finest country singers, as is Ronstadt whose politics I don't abhor (Reba McIntyre's, I do, but I still watch her show!) Your critique is professional level.
Anyone who has ever lost a loved one can attest to this song's powerful pathos. The song can kill and soothe, all at the same time. Also, the harmonious singing of these three song birds is beyond compare. For my money, Dolly has the best Bluegrass voice on Earth. Linda (whose liberal, Pro-Michael Moore politics are abhorrent to me) is simply wonderful singing whatever style of music she chooses to interpret. As for Emmy Lou, what can you say? She is a beautiful pioneer, a legend.

Bill Monroe would be proud to hear his song this way, it's fantastic and instrumentally and vocally perfect!

Bill did not write this one, his song company published it. It was written by Alan O Bryan of the Nashville Bluegrass band, and he wrote it good.

How do you forget Dolly? She's singing lead in this song! That's why it's the "Trio"--Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Linda Ronstadt.
