I was stuck with Vista for about 3 years, I finally got another OS and it was Ubuntu.
I use my computer for multimedia tasks, such as watching videos and using Blender 3D. My point here on Vista is that Ubuntu could render a scene that was too demanding for Vista's resource hungry shenanigans.
Ubuntu scored high here, it's pulling through.
I have to say, I'm sticking with Ubuntu.
I'll keep Vista around some, on a little partition.
valvetrailers, you can set it up however you want it to boot up. You CAN have it boot right into the desktop. You should know what you're talking about before posting a comment. I've been using Ubuntu for about 10 months now and would NEVER go back to MS!!!
I don't think loading antivirus at startup on the Windows machine is fair at all. "Typical" for whom? I've never used memory-resident antivirus software that initiates at startup.
Like I said, the only way to do it fairly is to have them both load from a clean install with nothing extra starting at startup. Also, are you using EXT3 or EXT4 for Jaunty?
You should also check resume from hibernate and shutdown speeds. I bet Jaunty gets destroyed in the former, but wins the latter.
Okay. I agree with your point..The people i know who are using windows as operating system users some form of Antivirus as startup/service. Again "typical" is very subjective...
Any ways..I will repeat the comparision test later with your suggestions.. But this time with Windows 7 RC and Ubuntu Karmic Alpha 2.
I will try hibernate too...
For your question on File System..I am using EXT4 for jaunty.
Both clean installs? Both not loading extra crap?
To be fair, each should be loaded with the latest drivers and no extra crap (including panels loaded by drivers). And by clean install I don't mean AS THE OEM/MANUFACTURER SHIPS IT, because they always preload crap onto it. So how fair was this?
Both are clean installs + typical base applications. Eg. Firefox + antivirus + nvidia Drivers in the Windows and Firefox + Flash + nvidia Drivers in Ubuntu. The Idea is to compare the typical usable systems. In my opinion this is a fair test. If you differ please comment..
my mac boots in 28sec and then shuts down in 8sec. i had a video of it racing another laptop but i took it down. i wish i left it up now lol. oh well, ubuntu is still better than osx, windows or anything for that matter.
Enabling splash screen increases the boot time by 1 sec. To add with it. the File system jaunty is running is ext4. If you notice during the boot the "fsck" ran on the root file system ;)
The laptop models are Sony Vaio FZ 11L (ubuntu) and FZ 21E (Vista)

Vista, March 2008- Sept 2011.
Good riddance.

You're comparing the worst version of Windows to the best version of Linux.
Don't get me wrong, I use Linux, but that's just not fair.

I have dual booted my pc with vista and ubuntu 10.04 ( I also used jaunty before) and the booting up times were :
Vista : 1min 27sec 32"
Ubuntu : 18sec.

One of the reasons I love Jaunty. Sadly, my sound card doesn't work for some reason. I'm able to use headphones though so it could be worse.

Surely someone can help you to fix your sound card problem. Can you send me the output of lspci and dmesg?
