The town is Shutkari, which is only inhabited from April to November by horse and pony owners supporting the trekkers and local shepherds. After November 1st, the terrain gets very hostile. The closest town is Sonamarg (or "Sonmarg"). It's about 90km northeast of Srinagar and 15-20km south of the infamous "Line of Control." It's absolutely one of the nicest places on earth and, despite what you may have heard about Kashmir, incredibly safe.
