I use a small window system, and use water from my fish tank to water them, the plants clean the water (use poo as fertilizer, they are all sitting on clean pebbles so no dirt gets in water) and I put the water back in my fish tank, keeps it all nice and clean.
Dont use plastic man! that shit leeches chemicals into tha water, and that plastic hanging in tha sun is gonna radiate the chems into tha water from tha heat in the window!! Do it all the same but no plastics ok... peace out dudes
Funny - extension metal grilles above and below widows have been functioning as apartment window farms in India for decades, but then NYC is a different place.... Rooftop rice farming from waste water. Basically for small independent homes - but can easily be adapted for apartments on a large scale. All the grey water - usually 10 gallons or more per housing unit in an apartment and urine can be used to grow rice on the apartment terrace. watch?v=88gb3QWA7i0&playnext=1&list=PLFF722C5B015A3F10

To address the topic of wether plants would deplete the oxygen in your apartment, as several people have already commented, they would not. They would add to the amount of oxygen.
The oxygen used in photosynthesis comes from H2O. Not from CO2. So while the amount of carbon could be decreased, O2 would not because it is the waste product of photosynthesis.
But, independent of any of the above an inclosed space should always be ventilated.

Plants will not deplete the oxygen in your apartment. Actually, they do the opposite by taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. They work as air purifiers too, resulting in better air quality. Great for apartment dwellers.
Hm.. thats debatable, the other person's commentwasnot completely false, it is true that plants do use oxygen at night although its not nearly enough to counteract with the amount it makes durring the day, i supose it depends on the photo-period?
This is true during the time the plant receives light. Photosynthesis produces oxygen, but plants respire when light is not present, and this does consume oxygen and release C02 in the process of metabolizing its own sugars.
Having said that, getting a roommate would probably have a comparable effect to the O2 levels in your house.
Day light time lasting far longer than night time, the fact that plants consume O2 during the might is not a problem : they've already produced plenty of it during day time.
Aquaponics. Nuff said
