  • It may well be Ugly but just think of the THRASH!! you would get outa that thing, HELLFIRE!!!

  • This is why the Old Man on the Mountain is gone... He saw the lack of nostalgia progressing and decided it was time to jump before it got worse...

  • Wow. You guys are complaining like it's the 1950's and 60's all over again!

  • PIECE OF SHIT AND UGLY AS FUCK!!!

  • what a piece of shit! Who thought this was a good idea? Steam is better!

  • the old Coal engines were better last time i was up there, it was over the summer and they were only using the 2 Diesel engines and only had the coal engines as a back up, cuz i guess they said that it would take longer to get up the mountain because it would have to stop half way up to fill up with water and the Diesels dont have to stop at all except to let the descending train down

  • you can't even call that the cog anymore, i bet the builders of the railway a rolling over in their graves at the site of this

  • I think it's cute...

  • Jake brake down the hill, that would be sweet!

  • And doesn't it look stupid with those passenger cars!

  • I agree completely...these engines are "butt-ugly"...what were they thinking. What about history and the technology that started the cog train in the first place. If they are worried about pollution and "going green" perhaps they should shut down the auto road thus stopping the cars and their pollution!!

  • sadly there are now three of these tracto-I mean "locomotives"

  • The Mt Washington cog train ride is the best train ride in America. Pleas don't go diesel. It will never be the same if you do.

  • That diesel is a 600hp John Deere

  • That thing is a disgrace to railroading, even for a diesel; I understand that money is tight now, but no one is going to pay to be pushed up a mountain by that thing.

  • Efficient and enviro-friendly, yes. Aesthetic and charming - no!

  • should of made them look like fake old ones complete with smokin' smoke stack.

  • It looks like they deliberately made it as ugly as possible.

Look at the diesel locos on the Snowdon Mountain Railway in Wales and compare it to this thing, its disgraceful.

  • Ugh..that thing is ugly and has absolutely *no* charm to it whatsoever. I don't care if I have to wait for hours in line to ride one with a steam engine, I'm not going to ride up the mountain with one of those things.

  • agreed...i went up a few years back when they were all steam...and want to go back but not on one of those..it takes all the fun out of it...and i wouldnt want to listin to that the whole time...

  • There are plenty of tree's to filter out any pollution that steam loco's put out.The cog is visited by many for it's traditional use of steam. The diesel will kill the cog railroad.Too bad.....

  • actually, it goes back to the ground. The pollution dosent really linger in the air, its the ground enviroment that they are worried about. You see the black smoke coming from those dimond chimneys, no? We love it, and there are lots of things you can do to delt with it, still keeping the steam engine without majorly altering it.

However, I hope this is the only diesel they ever get. And I do hope its the last.

    keep on coggin...by STEAM engine.

  • HELP THE EMPLOYEES KILL THAT ABOMINATION!!!write JOEL BEDOR!!! He is the one owner who can be reasoned with. Ive worked there for ten years and we need the help of custemers to tell them to stop because they wont listen to the employees. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!

  • Sadly this is due to people moving in from the cities don't like seeing smoke on the mountain and have been lobbying against the "Smoking beasts" for awhile now.

  • Starting to look like the environazis are going to push steam off the cog. Sad.

  • Rumor has is they plan on building two more over the winter... it sounds like steam will only be used for reserve power and special occaisions... I hope I'm wrong because I would rather take the auto road then ride a diesel...

  • im an engineer there and what you say is true. All the train crew there are trying to stop it. it has nothing to do with pollution but a cut in budget costs. Tell everyone you can to write JOEL BEDOR and tell him diesel will kill the cog. Please help us keep steam and make this abominaton stop.

  • ...It sure lacks character.

  • amen.
