Great video! Me and a friend of mine are just jumping into it. We had to convince our parents that we weren't complete idiots and that we knew what we were doing. We even heated some metal to show my friend's dad we could do it. If you have any advice for us we would greatly appreciate it!!
So im starting to get into making my own knives and i cant figure out how to stop them from rusting. Can someone pleaseeeee help me out and tell me how to keep them from rusting.
You guys are amazing, I'm only 14, but I'm aspiring to get into smithing. I'm really fascinated by mythology and history, especially that of the Greeks. What did you guys do to get into this? Did you just jump in and try?
We got started just because we wanted to and dove right in. We grew up reading guys like Tolkien and Lewis, and were inspired to get off of our butts stop playing video games and stop wasting our lives like most kids our age, so we were inspired by our Christian faith.
You can read more on the "Inspiration" page of our website
@ajwalters12 - If you really want to get into blacksmithing, you should check out local blacksmithng groups in your area. Nearly every state has at least one and sometimes several. Visit the website of the Artists Blacksmiths Association of North America - ABANA - for a list of affiliated groups near you. There are similar organizations in other countries, too.
I recently spoke to a blacksmith named Jim Jesse (sp?) who told me to check out the Mad Dwarf Workshop (he was a little late;) anyway, he mentioned that you are here in Indiana. If it's not an imposition, I'd like to come see you sometime.
Your work is absolutely inspiring. It would fulfill my existence to do something like that. I would be honored to be an apprentice and learn from you guys!
out of curiosity (not trying to criticize or anything, you guys do great work) have you tried making a knife/sword using nothing but hand tools? (meaning, nothing that works on electricity) if not, you should try it, you might even learn something from the slower process that may improve your work even more
This video was filmed late 2006 when we were kids.
We're currently working on a commisioned piece for a museum where we are recreating a historical sword completely traditionaly made without use of any power tools. We should have it done end of this summer and up on our site when its revised.
@fordlukebo thanks, I'm still trying to get an actual forge running, but any metal work or wood working I mainly do with just hand tools, with the rare exception of a dremel or a bench grinder
Been a fan of your work on flickr for a while, just found the vids, very nice to see work in progress pictures. While I am not particularly a LOTR fan or into the whole fantasy genre I DO appreciate time and effort spent on creating a fantastic looking product. I love the attention to detail in the work you produce !
REALLY AWESOME!! Its like you use you blacksmithing mind powers to bend and form the blade! Im a beginner smith myself and cant seem to really get the blade to form as i want it to.
I love your work and I love your videos so please please please understand where I'm coming from when I say, don't wear gloves when you use the grinder! I'd hate for you to loose fingers. I want you to keep making awesome swords into the future so I can eventually commission one. Keep up the good work and stay safe!
You are lucky to have all the resources you need to forge swords. Must be expensive! Mind telling me how much it is for certain items, such as a simple forger?
You know what? I've looked at ColdSteel's videos and I've looked at yours and guess what? I would much rather have something from MadDwarfWorkshop than from that mall ninja hive.
sexy...i also saw ur vid on dohrtoc...youre crafters are realy good...ive always been crazy about blacksmithing and bladecraft...i cant wait to see ur guyses other vids
hey fellas, Im a huge fan of your work and have been checking out your posts on bladesmith forum boards,Ive just got to say, excelent job. you are a credit to the art!
UKF, I'm a merging blade maker as well and I think I can answer your question for you.
The cost doesnt neccesarily have to be expensive, if you go with forging, the anvil will cost the most, just keep the equipment simple till you know if you actually like this type of work or not..also, don't forget saftey equipment.
Also, really enjoy the work that comes out of MadDwarfWorkshop, I disagree with what you gusy say about fantasy swords though. I've seen plenty of high quality hand made ones.
I'm REALLY interested in seeing how you etch the blades- I want to put nice runic lettering on my blades as well, and etching doesn't really do a deep, sharp-edged job of it...
im actually amezed by your stuff your doing exactlty what i want to be doing in a few years!! although i want to be doing a bit of plate armour as well...
please take a look at my vids..trying to clock up a few more views!!
That was great I really liked it plus you showed all the steps in a neat orderly manner and with a catchy tune too.The only thing that I dont like about the blade was the crossguard.Say your hand slips and that little thing is way too small and...yeah you get the point. :(

I really love your work, but why do you never temper your weapons?
Xiras1985 4 months ago
@Xiras1985 Um... we temper all of our blades. Just because its not shown in this vid doesn't mean we dont do it. ;) Cant record everything

which runes are you using?
FUwogs 5 months ago
@FUwogs
Moon Runes, the version of runes used by Tolkien in the Hobbit.
And no, sorry we're not pagans, we're followers of Christ, because we want to experience lasting Joy.
Just like Tolkien was. :)

no wax involved. The etchant is Ferric Chloride. the same stuff to etch PCB boards in. You can buy it at radioshack cheap.

MorbidWinter 2 years ago
Yes a workshop like that is expensive indeed.
But remember, You only live Once!
If Blacksmithing is what you like and want to do, then do everything that is in your power to do it!
Use the help of others if needed. There are always people willing to help.
You dont have to buy all the stuff in one setting. Instead slowly gather the tools needed before you start.
Thats how i did it!
