Its pretty impressive that you are 34 and you vertical is increasing. Most NBA players start to slow down at 34, but then again you dunk every day. I'm 6'1.5 and have 34.5 vertical leap. Hopefully it isnt my max I havent worked out before and I'm only 16. My vertical leap was 28 inches and then my coach gave me weighted insoles I walked every with them but if messed up my ankle a bit but now dunking is easy, you just have to be able to get your hand above the rim.
Dude, the main problem I see with your jumping is the range of motion is small and your technique to transfer energy upwards is poor. Although if your getting a 28" now, technique and such would have you dunking with authority. Get down lower before explosion, use your arms/back more. The last 2 steps before you jump are so critical in carrying your momentum up, you seem to be losing almost all of that at takeoff.
hey man! i really like your videos and how you keep track of your progress and more importantly of how you never give up. Keep working dude. I have a dunk quest as well. Difference: I'm 21 and make fast progress... I expect to be able to dunk (I have a 28" vertical or so, i need 40° im only 5"10) in 4 months... lets see. p.s. your video is funny too
I'm sorry to hear that. I wish you a healthy recovery. Still, don't give up. I suffered a cruciate ligament rupture 4 years ago, but here I finally am, jumping higher as ever before. I think in a jump program, rest, no alcohol, sleep, good nutrition are very important to ensure full recovery and effectiveness. Every program insists on that point. I will take more care on that I guess, as I am executing a program during basketball season...
jdlava, try doing this, for the next two days stay home and rest, eat alot less than you usually do,dont do any excersises what so ever just stretch very well when u wake up and before you go to bed, remember(eat alot less then usuall) on day three, stretch very well and if u havent ate as much then u should be hungry so have a very good meal,go play bball, warm up before you begin jumping and then try jumping your highest,u should be jumping 2-3 inches higher
I did consult directly with VJB author Kelley Baggett. Through emails. He had good workouts for me. My problem was never enough sleep and rest, never enough bball playing.
The reason you jumped the highest after the first two months is because you were doing beginner plyometrics and training. You then jumped into higher intensity plyometrics and weight lifting too quickly. Like alot of people already said, you were overtraining. Try heavy lifting (5 sets of 3reps with 4min breaks) lower body once a week, and lower body plyometrics twice a week (one light day one easy day) . Rest a day in between each. This will prevent overtraining.
When ur doin weight training use heavier weights with explosive movement, dont do high reps with light weights, this will only increase ur endurance. What u want to do is increase ur explosiveness... so explosive - heavy weight training with low reps. Do that twice or 3 times a week. Get plenty of rest and eat nutritious food. Dont over train!!
and u will be fine and should see gains very soon.
when u started vjb, u were supposed to do novice weights for the first 2 phases alone, without plyos. i think the problem is just basically over training. rest up a bit and ull be dunking in no time.
i watched some earlier videos and sawthe one where u were weight trainin ur doin it wrong little weights are good but not big ones its slowing down ur fast twitch muscles wich are needed for explosivenes wich will ultimately give u more inches on vert. whenever u train do it as fast as u can every time to increase speed /eplosion of ur step before jump this will make u get higher quicker
hey man, try improving yur 2 foot hop, u will increase the speed of yur muscle reaction speed(twitch). when u step into yur hop, take a much bigger initial step, as big a step as u can and try to jump as soon as possible, dont wait for even a split second. watch all the dunkers and their 2 foot hop, they all use the same technique and yur technique is different, trust me this will help u a lot.
its really cool how u made these vidoes of all this working out and jumping exercises for over a year and ur vertical looks exactly the same lmfao... but keep trying u might get it in another 30 yeasrs
Calves are not supposed to be a very major part of the vertical jump, but from person experience this has really helped me.
Do lots of Interval Cardio on a slope, (either hill or inclined treadmill) and on each step of your run try to pop off the ground to move up more than just horizontally.
Also run up stairs, each step pop up to the next step, (use a weighted vest if it gets too easy) until your body fat precentage is low and STRETTTCCCHHHH!!!!
these vids r entertaining keep goin man ur guna get it, try alley oups off 2 feet you will get higher have your friend place the ball right near the rim so all you have to do is jump and put it in check out my vids to see how we jump
i have been watching your videos since they began and honestly i think that if you cant play basketball without dying out there you need to run as fast you can for short periods of time with breaks in between. long workouts will not help. just short ones where you give it all you got.
hey joel try front squats ive never touched the rim in my whole life im 27yld so im tryin anabolic steroids to gve me a push an doin squats bench an cleans as well
you should jus try using air alert programme. it takes 15 weeks but it works specifically on muscles used for jumping and doesnt require using all those weights. and it definetly works aslong as you stick to the programme.
I'd definitely say jump training is about burst, not endurance. Having said that, I've also found there's a kajillion workouts out there, and all of them help someone.
great vid...as someone who experienced the "platue effect", i suggest u use jumpsoles. they may look like a gimmick but they really do work. they added 7 inches to my vert. im 5 10 170 19 years old and i can dunk. did i mention im white lol. they really give you a boost. just a consideration. once again great vid nice editing
... you know what i did? i do squats for a year and play basketball 4-5 days a week and ive got mayby 2-5cm more and you what i did? i took Creatine!! dude buy a subplements youll see the progress in month i know i did in 2 weeks i made 5 more cm and now i can dunk like an noobie blackguy but i dont care im still doing sqats and im waiting to my body regenerate and buy next pack of creatine ... i didnt took steroids but i would if creatin wouldnt help ... think about that
im on week 12 of airalert3 (gained like 7 inches and can touch rim now), i noticed all my inprovements came in my quads. they are now muscular as hell, calves had a bit of improvement too. but i cannot squat for shit max like 25 pounds. would working my prosterior chain benefit me alot?
It depends on where you are weak...it really varies by person...for me, bulgarian lunges seem even better than squats...but there's dozens of pchain exercises out there...
they are good, it just depends where in your development and strength you are...they may not be the best for your current strength & abilities...there's some trial and error unfortunately
the anklebreaker was funny, anyways you are doing pretty good, I know you are being instructed to do a lot of weight training but afterwords you need to do some pool exercises like running the length of the pool as far as you can or jogging in place for 30 minutes in the water it makes you flexible and makes a difference I do it and I am 16 and 6 even but i can dunk and get eye level with the rim now with a running vert of 41 inches whereas a month before it was like 34 inches.

i love your persistence
are you still having the same playing-basketball endurance issue?
If you are, I'm a big proponent of tabata style training (basically High intensity interval training)
you can read about it on t-nation (or Google [i was going to post a url but YouTube isn't being very nice about that])

reddz541 3 years ago
No...
Air Alert is absolutely terrible. It's bad for your knees, which I know Joel has had knee problems.
It has you doing like 700 jumps a day... That's working endurance not raw power output, which is what you want for a vertical jump.
It all comes down to resistance training, and plyos for the vertical leap, and Air Alert, does neither one effectively.
I other words anyone thinking of using Air Alert... Don't.
