@MeggyGoesRawr The song is called "Without You." It's Tommy's song "I Can't Live" paired with Pete's verses from his tune called "If It's Love." I love this version because it gives a kind of...raw edge that the other versions of the song don't seem to have. I also just LOVE Pete Ham's voice. From the first time I heard this song it grabbed my attention.
This was the original and then Harry Nilsson also did it pretty Ironic that Pete Ham and Tom Evans both took there own lives and Harry Nilsson died way before his time.
Nillson's version is just different in a very good way. Badfinger's is majestic too, as you would expect from a great, underrated songwriter like Ham. Such a shame there was no one to help him through the depression. I used to pit Badfinger against The Raspberries, but eventually realized that the former was superior. Ham was a truly deep songwriter and artist. Carmen had lots of intensity and melodic grunge, but not the depth.
There's no reason you have to choose which version is better. The music industry is an entertainment industry, and as long as you're entertained that's all that matters. I'll never understand why so many people look upon music as if it were an either/or decision. One of the best things about music is you can have your Badfinger and your Harry Nilsson too!
I want to let everyone know of the official website of the group Badfinger that we just put up by working closely with Joey Molland. You can ask him questions personally, learn about upcoming tour dates, or just read the news about the group and their journey. badfingersite (dot) com
It is ironic that Nilsson's biggest hit was a Badfinger song. Nilsson was a truly great song writer. It is rumored that John Lennon handed the song to Nilsson after Badfinger didn't make it a hit. I also feel that Badfinger is probably one of the most underrated bands of all time. It say allot about Badfinger that so many artists have had hits with their song. A true classic.
Founding member Pete Ham committed suicide on April 24, 1975. The band folded following Ham's death, and various subsequent attempts to reform Badfinger floundered. Band member Tom Evans, who saw Pete Ham's body hanging, also died by suicide, on November 19, 1983. Evans never got over his friend's suicide, and has been quoted by many as saying in darker moments, "I wanna be where he is." The band's story was once described as "the classic rags-to-riches tragic Shakespearean story ending."
@54mor1544c Don't see how you can say that after listening to Harry Nilsson. I like this, and it's the original and it's good. But Nilsson is angelic.
@54mor1544c Don't see how you can say that after listening to Harry Nilsson. I like this, and it's the original and it's good. But Nilsson is angelic.
@johnfright yeah, Nilsson doesn't come close to badfingers' and I like the Everly Brothers, "Love Hurts" better then Nazareth's verison...Don't get me wrong theirs' was not bad.
Sshelly34219 you know your stuff! look this one up if you don't already know it. Three Dog Night's version "Joy to the World" was basically recorded as a lark, using the balance of studio time left from what they had already booked and paid for. The song was written by Hoyt Axton, a musician in his own right, who also had a movie role as the father in the 80's movie "Gremlins." Here's the kicker: His mother wrote the lyrics for "Heartbreak Hotel."
Sshelly34219 I stand corrected. Of course Nilsson wrote a bunch of great songs, "Everybody's Talking" among them. You are absolutely right. Thanks for reminding me!
@forumghost1 No problem! He actually didn't write Everybody's Talkin' that was written by Fred Neil. It's ironic how Nilsson is so known by two songs he happened to cover and his own songs, Coconut and One is the Loneliest Number, were more known by their covers. (three dog night made One a popular song.)
Other than that Nilsson has written some fantastic work like Moonbeam Song, How Can I be Sure of You, 1941, Gotta Get up, and I Guess the Lord Must be in NY City-rejected from Midnight cowboy
I respect your opinion. No one can say that Harry Nilsson didn't hit it out of the park with his version. Personally, I love it. Having said that, writing a song is an achievement, covering one is a parlour trick. Peace.

@forumghost1 Nilsson was not a cover artist though...he wrote plenty of music that equally parallels this song. A lot of people actually covered his music. Mariah Carey? She's just a singer, she's not an artist.
We really appreciate your video featuring the original recording by Badfinger. Pete Ham and Tom Evans wrote this sincere ballad back in 1970, featured on "No Dice" which also included "No Matter What"!
I admit Harry's version lifted the veil, added a whole new dimension and was more accessible. However, Badfinger's Without You is still great. It has that wonderful soulful Badfinger feeling in it. You have to listen to a few Badfinger albums to appreciate. Try Straight Up and No Dice--Their 2 best IMHO albums. Peace.
I don't get why people need to diss Mariah , we all know that girl (and awesome singer) made that song reknown all over the world, people have to give her credit for that and for her new arrangements. That version is very different, more rock, but less emotional and with more simpler vocals.
@theoneandonly2503 Really? Shocking because the version I always knew was the Harry NIlsson version, when did Carey cover that? To be honest, I don't know anyone my age who actually buys her cds and listens to her anymore. I always thought she was much more successful-and better-in the 90s before she went all pop.
@Sshelly34213 I agree with you on that, and you mean before she went all RNB I think, cause she was definitivly pop at the beginning of her career (pop and Soul at the same time). I don't know where do you live, but in Eyurope everybody think (more or less) that this is an original Mariah song!
@Sshelly34213 that's the reason, in Europe, Mariah's song was at the top of the charts (n°1) in like every country LOOL. I know in the USa Mariah's version never was n° 1, it was N° 2 i think. Maybe Nilson's version have had more success in the US, but worldwilde (Asia, Europe, South America) no doubt everybody knows that song as The Mariah Carey song :)
@theoneandonly2503 Well thanks, it's interesting to know that. I know I've seen the Nilsson version used in films more, so that's probably another reason why Americans have more exposure to that version.
@Sshelly34213 just asking cause u said u don't know anyone ur age who buys or listen Mariahs cd anymore and I was wondering what age u were to know exactly who u were talking about... personnaly I never cared about her and I'm 30 years old. Thats all
@Sshelly34213 yeah I found her Wack... her attitude doesn't help her either. She just belongs to the past, like 15 years ago. And this song here didn't need to be perform by her.... personnaly I don't think she add anything to it. But enough about her, Txs for answering my question. I like your comments ... you Kool. Chao
So this is the original of this fabulous song that Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey did covers of as well as others. This was so different, with the guitar work and how fast this went, the chords were different and they didn't how out the notes. This is great in its own right!
Thank you to this band for writing the most beautiful ballad of all-time in my opinion!! But thank you Nilsson and especially Carey for making me know that song!! Each version is so great and particular even if I like Mariah's version a little bit more since it's the first one I knew (and most of people besides)!!
@CiderArmyRules No, He didn't! Pete Hams version is by far the best. He's pouring his heart out in this song. You can hear the sorrow in his voice. I was 15 years old when I bought the album "NO Dice" This will always be my favorite version. Mariah Carey's version also falls short of the Great Pete Ham version. RIP Tom & Pete. What a tremendous waste of pure talent. Just another example of what a record company can do to artists.
This has to be the saddist storied band of all times. Why has there never been a movie made about them? All the stuff they went though. Wow! This is the best version of this song. And if you know their storyIt makes this song really sad.
wow absolutely amazing way better than mariah carey's by far this is my first time hearing this version its breathtaking just really takes ur breath away!!!!!
when i came home after haveing my dreams crushed by the girl.. i came home and herd this on the radio it ft perfectly"i ccant forget this evenin and your face when you were leavin you always smiled but in your eye your sorrow shows
This is a great song, no doubt. But it's interesting to me that where Badfinger chose to have a guitar solo, Harry Nilsson chose to place a soaring vocal octave jump that nearly 40 years later *still* puts chills down my spine when I hear it. I think a song can become transcendent when someone who can interpret its full potential hears it and just runs with it. Just my 2 cents... :-)
i know a lot of you people like this version, but it doesn't work for me, that said the video is great, i think if someone put this video to nilsson version i think the water works would start.
I understand where you're coming from. There is a huge difference between this and Nilsson's version. I prefer this one, but I knew this one first. A lot of original versions of songs just don't sound right if you heard one of the remakes first. One fine example: listen to Nazareth's hit version of "Love Hurts," then listen to the original version by The Everly Brothers.
That didn't happen to me. I heard "Earth Angel" as played on ''Back to the Future'', and many years after that I heard the 1954 original by The Penguins, which became my favorite.
@TuberOnTheLoose Yes but the Everly Brothers did not write Love Hurts, so that's not technically the "original." It was written by Boudleaux Bryant. The first version I ever heard was by Roy Orbison. I really think it has to do with which version you hear first, that's the one that really sticks in your head.
@Sshelly34213 - Thanks for the info! I did not know who wrote "Love Hurts," but a quick check of the internet shows that The Everly Brothers did indeed have the first recorded version. You might not consider that an original because they did not write it, but in my opinion the first recorded version does make it the standard by which to judge subsequent versions. On the other hand, I see little use in doing covers unless you are going to try to make them different so they become your own.
@TuberOnTheLoose Well again...my opinion is that Roy Orbison does the best cover version. So it really is about what you hear first. I judge all other versions by the Roy Orbison version I originally heard, including the Everly Brothers.
you really hit the spot with the images. All those moments when you're far off some place searching to fill that spot, only realizing "it" when you they're so far away. Sharing those fleeting moments that feel so beautiful but so solitary from the eye that saw these images. Pure yearning for that soulful experience of another being that makes it all come to life. I can see you've had your spoonful.
I can feel his sadness. prefer this one waaaay more than the mariyah carey cover. I love this, it feels good, you know? Good music is music is what you feel, not necessarily what sounds good.

@theoneandonly2503 Yes she was very soulful, which I enjoyed. Oh wow, I live in the US, so I think Nilsson's version was bigger here.
Sshelly34213 11 months ago
@Sshelly34213 that's the reason, in Europe, Mariah's song was at the top of the charts (n°1) in like every country LOOL. I know in the USa Mariah's version never was n° 1, it was N° 2 i think. Maybe Nilson's version have had more success in the US, but worldwilde (Asia, Europe, South America) no doubt everybody knows that song as The Mariah Carey song :)
theoneandonly2503 11 months ago
@theoneandonly2503 Well thanks, it's interesting to know that. I know I've seen the Nilsson version used in films more, so that's probably another reason why Americans have more exposure to that version.

@Sshelly34213 and what age are you
Si6xxx 11 months ago
@Si6xxx Why is that relevant?
Sshelly34213 11 months ago
@Sshelly34213 just asking cause u said u don't know anyone ur age who buys or listen Mariahs cd anymore and I was wondering what age u were to know exactly who u were talking about... personnaly I never cared about her and I'm 30 years old. Thats all
Si6xxx 11 months ago
@Si6xxx I'm 22, I just don't know anyone who listens to her cds, even if they do recognize her vocal talents.
Sshelly34213 11 months ago 2
@Sshelly34213 yeah I found her Wack... her attitude doesn't help her either. She just belongs to the past, like 15 years ago. And this song here didn't need to be perform by her.... personnaly I don't think she add anything to it. But enough about her, Txs for answering my question. I like your comments ... you Kool. Chao

@Si6xxx Thanks, well I can't argue there. No probs!

Without You is such a famous song I can't believe that people get the title wrong.
cbak12sg 1 year ago
So this is the original of this fabulous song that Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey did covers of as well as others. This was so different, with the guitar work and how fast this went, the chords were different and they didn't how out the notes. This is great in its own right!
HandwhistlerBen 1 year ago

Great cover, I still cant believe to this day that two of these guys took their own lives, what a shame. They were awesome.
ethifanman 1 year ago
This is a great song, no doubt. But it's interesting to me that where Badfinger chose to have a guitar solo, Harry Nilsson chose to place a soaring vocal octave jump that nearly 40 years later *still* puts chills down my spine when I hear it. I think a song can become transcendent when someone who can interpret its full potential hears it and just runs with it. Just my 2 cents... :-)

i know a lot of you people like this version, but it doesn't work for me, that said the video is great, i think if someone put this video to nilsson version i think the water works would start.
jonocfc14 2 years ago
I understand where you're coming from. There is a huge difference between this and Nilsson's version. I prefer this one, but I knew this one first. A lot of original versions of songs just don't sound right if you heard one of the remakes first. One fine example: listen to Nazareth's hit version of "Love Hurts," then listen to the original version by The Everly Brothers.
TuberOnTheLoose 1 year ago 4
That didn't happen to me. I heard "Earth Angel" as played on ''Back to the Future'', and many years after that I heard the 1954 original by The Penguins, which became my favorite.

@fluence51 CHECK OUT Neal SEars ' version of "I Don't Call Her Anymore"
moderntimes08 1 year ago
@TuberOnTheLoose Yes but the Everly Brothers did not write Love Hurts, so that's not technically the "original." It was written by Boudleaux Bryant. The first version I ever heard was by Roy Orbison. I really think it has to do with which version you hear first, that's the one that really sticks in your head.
Sshelly34213 1 year ago
@Sshelly34213 - Thanks for the info! I did not know who wrote "Love Hurts," but a quick check of the internet shows that The Everly Brothers did indeed have the first recorded version. You might not consider that an original because they did not write it, but in my opinion the first recorded version does make it the standard by which to judge subsequent versions. On the other hand, I see little use in doing covers unless you are going to try to make them different so they become your own.
TuberOnTheLoose 1 year ago
@TuberOnTheLoose Well again...my opinion is that Roy Orbison does the best cover version. So it really is about what you hear first. I judge all other versions by the Roy Orbison version I originally heard, including the Everly Brothers.
Sshelly34213 1 year ago
you really hit the spot with the images.
