James Brown was most certainly a better artist. Whether he was a better entertainer is debatable, and I'd probably say Michael beat him there, but Brown was more innovative and had more control of his music, plus he was one of the first black artists to gain mass appeal from a white audience. I suppose you could say, though, that MJ was to the 80's what Brown was to the 60's.
