  • The arch in your back is at to much of an angle. Slight arch in your back is what is required for a 'proper' bench press. This will do nothing for you except give you a back injury. Drop the weight and do it again

  • Arching your back is the best way to lift if you want to lift as much as you can, of course without hurting yourself.

    If he was comfortable here (no back pain or anything of the like) and his ass and shoulders are on the bench, then this was a good lift with a lot of power behind it.

  • @nikdat I believe you are correct good sir. With bodybuilding, form is everything. There is a saying that goes like this. A body builder is a weight trainer who is too weak to be a powerlifter but a powerlifter is too fat to be a bodybuilder. Not really sure about that but with bodybuilding, by doing excellent form you will do less weight. However even with perfect form you still need to lift big. I am a bodybuilder (well I only just started and am still uber skinny) but it's all fun!

  • This isn't bench press. It's decline press. Use proper form for bench press then put videos up. Kudos on the weight, but these are cheater ego exercises.

  • That's not a Bench Press, That's a Bench BRIDGE... He would have gotten disqualified as soon as he took the bar off the rack. Pound 4 pound, I weighed in at 170 lbs. and benched 365 lbs. and that was RAW. I never could get used too to those Bench Shirt.

  • The reason he is arching his back has nothing to do with his back strength, or bad technique, it is actually good technique. The reason you arch your back when powerlifting is first of all to descrease the range of motion, shoulders and butt have to touch the bench thats all, secondly it helps drive force up all the way from your feet to your arms, helping you lift MORE, wether it will injure his back or not, is irrelevant, since I dont see him lifting with his back, but his arms. Educate urself

  • pretty impressive, but u shud work other parts of ur body. like ur back so u can stabilize the weights without arching ur back. and ur legs kinda need a little work if u can take constructive criticism. but other than that, nice benching.

  • Exactly! You're a football player! That's one sport, the guy in the video is a powerlifter, that's a different sport. The goal of powerlifting is to move as much weight from point A to point B doing whatever you can within the guidelines. You are allowed to arch your back as much as you want as long as any part of your butt and and shoulders are the bench. Powerlifters do NOT care if they are the size of a house or the size of a girl, if I can lift more than you, I win. Stop being ignorant.

  • No, that IS the point. HE is a powerlifter. YOU are not. HE is doing correct powerlifting technique. And no, you are wrong, the back is the strongest when it is arched. The arched position is the safest position for the lower back. Even though it's not powerlifting, all you have to do is observe a person's back. A normal back will have an inward curve. You are wrong in two cases, powerlifting technique and an arched back, just go ahead and admit it man.

  • No I am not a newbie. I am an experienced powerlifter in the 165 and 181 lb class. ANY doctor or sports physical therapist will tell you that a back is strongest in the arched position. Get your bullshit off of powerlifting videos and stick to football. Because you sure as hell do not belong in powerlifting or in giving powerlifting technique advice.

  • I've heard that the form you is using is legal in competition.. but NOT all! In many competitions you have to lay with your back on the bench. Still that kind of lift is ''cheating'', not good for your back and also a pretty dumb looking lift, if you could lift even 130kg all the way down I would be more impressed than your 180!

I never did and i'm glad that even to this day i still have perfect benching form. i'd rather put up less weight and get a good chest workout rather than put up weight heavier weight and look like a complete idiot at the gym.

The only thing that must touch are his ass and his shoulders, and as long as his feet are on the floor it is a clean lift. you guys are right, he is not very muscular to be bench pressing that amount of weight, but then again, powerlifters are there to lift weight, not develop muscles

  • Looks good to me mate! I compete in your weight class and 180 (even in a bench shirt) is good going! If anything your bum might have come off the bench but other than that I reckon it would pass in a comp.

    Full lockout before starting the lift, butt on the bench, great arch, touch extremely low, pause, even lockout. Congratulations ! At 49 years of age, weighing 179, I'm only at 364 bench. Again Congratulations.
