  • Stop wanking off in here!! This piece of music is epic.

  • The man is a stoic, but he is not hiding his passion. Amazing-no matter the speed.

  • Comment removed

  • @BaboonBassoon Why should he? I hate people like you, this is the way he chooses to play it your just jealous people actually watch :). Everyone has a right to their own interpretation without retarded youtube trolls like you coming here and pretending like your opinion is worth anything.

  • when i first learned this piece i thought it was way slower so i was playing it at like 50 bpm... this is like 90 O.o interesting interpretation, his playing is beautiful

  • Im a tuba player learning the Bach cello suites, and this is a mind blowing speed for me.

  • He's playing it like he's got a 'bus to catch.

  • I dont like this version. Its too fast and the bowing is different his not slurring some of the notes as it is in the music. But he's still a talented musician. I prefer Mischa Maisky's version way better. Just the right tempo, not too fast or slow and very clear and rich sound. :)

  • Just enjoy this piece of art played by the best cellist ever, it`s unique.

  • @jramz91 you can nuke everyone to death with stupidity like yours

  • @mariosyjp hahah so very clever. i would love to nuke YOU because of YOUR stupidity.

  • wow! looks like he's got super vision!

  • @jramz91

Then if you are turned on by the image of Rostropovich in this video, you are gerontophiliac or necrophiliac?

  • @colourfulwithaU you're creepy.. that's what you are.

  • @Wolf3660 who are you?... ive listened to this piece many times.

  • omg wtf that last notw was flat like hell. it ruinede the whole piece

  • @FreshAsphalt Naw... he was doing a long appoggiatura with a microtone and the video cut off before he resolved it. :-D

  • @tawnabawna Huh?!

  • I am 14 years old and play the violoncello. I have uploaded my own interpretation of this piece. It's of course not as masterful as this video, but it would still be nice if you would check it out and tell me what you think about it.

  • Wonderful reading of an immortal masterpiece.

  • I listen to classical as well as a lot of classic rock and 80's metal among other things but if i could give all of this ages music up so that Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, Debussy and many other great composers could come back and make more music and play concerts i would give it all up in a heartbeat. Todays music is nothing compared to classical music.

  • This is fabulous and all, but I keep noticing that both Rostropovich and Maisky can never get that low D perfectly in tune...

  • @Anya817

I dont get it which one do you mean (minute:second)?

The end of the first half (1:31) too low? I dont think so - maybe because the third of the D major chord is low in perfect pitch, the whole chord seems to sound little lower than in well temperatured piano pitch.

MAYBE only the D in 3:09 could be very little too sharp.

  • He Is Communicating In A Language The World Understands

  • It's so angry... still fucking amazing.

  • Мстислав Леопольдович РОСТРОПОВИЧ бессмертен в нашей памяти вечно!

  • i friggen love this man, and his massive glasses.

  • wooow. I love how he plays, but ANYWAY, that last not was HORRIBLE!

  • Bravo!

  • WOW.

  • Rostopovich or Yo Yo ma?

  • Love, love, love this piece especially when Rostopovich plays.

  • Beautiful!

  • 'Masterful"...fabulous.

    diana

  • + 1000 !!! SUBLIME !!! IMMORTALE !!! UNICO !!!

  • does he play with " Duport"??

  • The prophet sent by Bach LOL

  • This is an exceptional performance.

  • i watch u tube just to see the people argue... but it sounds great! passion!

  • it sounds sick!! great !

  • love good quality sound

  • People, don't bitch here, just enjoy the music please.

  • guy looks like Dick Cheney

  • i actually ahve rostropovich's autograph

  • animal

  • may he rest in peace!

  • When did he pass away?

  • @TylerCipolla : 27 / 04 / 2007, tanti carissimi saluti !

  • @TylerCipolla : april 2007 to cancer

  • FENOMENALE !!! ARTISTA SUBLIME !

  • i think it´s like a out of body experience when u are really into playing this, the body is there, but only for the purpose of playing, not to be at somebodys display,

so i reccomend to close your eyes while listening ^.^

  • @davebermuda so very true, i find that i have this same experience every time i play this song, in fact i play it better when i do, so much more emotion and you just feel closer to the music and the instrument in general.

  • If any one else was to play this piece at this speed everyone would say he was rushing. But no one dares say that about Rostropovich.

  • @ricim82 Not just the speed, his whole recording is crap...

  • @pinrootje I think you need to shut up.....

  • @xbasket12x true man shut up and listen

  • @pinrootje

If you say so- you really dont know a thing in music

  • @1ShaharCohen Music = feeling. I don't feel bach's love for music in this recording. The way you 'know' a thing in music has nothing to do with your feelings for it. That's all I've got to say about it.

  • @pinrootje hey, youll never be a quarter as good as rostropovich, so shut up :)

  • @pinrootje Are you referring to yourself, sir?

  • @ricim82 Actually, I would say everyone else is taking a romantic interpretation of a baroque piece.

  • @theothercanadian You are absolutely correct. They expect Baroque to be slow and full of feelings.

  • @ricim82

I kinda agree with that. I really love his interpretation on other plays, but i prefer other versions for the first suit at least. He's so rushing! But well as Bach left no indications to play...

  • "oh, of course I want to play the Bach suites. How much will a get for it?" This isn't music, this is his job. Just like someone in an office.

  • Rostopovich is amazing, but his facial expression never changes and makes me feel like the cello is serious business.

  • awesome playing.

  • Bach draait zich om in z'n graf!

  • @pinrootje - I absolutely agree. Bach would have a german fury if he heard his masterpiece ruined like that!

  • Anyway the bwv 999 lute suite prelude was very hard to play but half a year from when I started to play guitar I was able to play the half of it. With the cello suites I feel like I have to go from north korea to US by swimming, no way to do this.

  • I study guitar for a long time now, so I 've chosen this suite to play.On start I study the sheet rythmicaly then solfez and in the end I 've sung the notes with the right tempo(six first measures) everything seemed alright. But when I study the fingerings and position changes I understood that either I am an amateur or the guitar transcription I had read was only for guitar soloists.

  • la sua mano è leggera e delicata come il vento.....:)

  • AS a classical guitarist (well after a fashion!) I now always look at cellists' interpretations of Bach. They unfortunately make the classical guitar sound rather "thin" - but John W.Duarte and John Williams' Schott (GA 213) do offer "rich rewards" for the guitarist.

  • The Glenn Gould of the Cello.

  • composed by the giant J.S.Bach probably at Kothen, these 6 suites are authentical gems of music for this lovely instrument and we listen to them performed by the great maestro Rostropovich, what else do we need?

  • Amazing

  • amazing to my ears

Voy queriéndole con el Preludio... but not with the cello, but the electric bass :)

    Pulgar arriba!

  • My mother took up the guitar when she was in her 70s - well into them. The only other instrument she ever played was the harmonica, all by ear (she taught me when I was 9 and I've been making music ever since). She learned to read music. It's good for the brain to learn a musical instrument. Very good for the brain.

  • if bach have been heard rostropovich, he probably shoke his hand..

  • wait, his endpin is straight in this one.. is that a different cello?

  • TSss a no mames pinche ruquito se la rifa tocando ese violonsote

  • no comments..???

    he is truly amazing..!!

  • My father had the great pleasure and joy to listen to rostropovich play from a first row seat in 2000. He said it was the greatest musical experience of his life. This movie illustrates why.

  • you`ll get a 28

  • As a cellist I can almost feel how smooth that bow is on the strings just listening to it. It's a lot like the first cut with scissors into a fresh page of cardboard. Really satisfying.

  • @magicalhats15 Nice analogy. Personally I feel its more like diving into a quite lake of shimmering unbroken water. Interesting what different cellists hear in the same music!

  • as thethruthis9 pointed out, Hair is NOT important... However he does have a very lovely and shiney head.... I'd like to stroke it..

  • @EggieMeggieX It really is Far too bad The music master has past on but he will live on in his music. I will never see him preform and that sadens me but i willl enjoy his music as long as i shall live

  • @AngleofDecay here here!! so sad... =(

  • @EggieMeggieX

    This is the best comment.

  • @EggieMeggieX you necrophiliac..

  • @jramz91 You are just a fucking IDIOT, the term is Gerontofiliac (love for old people),not necrophiliac ( love for a dead corpse ) Learn your facts right and make sure your tongue is connected to your brain before opening your big and ignorant yapper. You are probably from the USA United Stupids of America.

  • @piontro LMFAO WOW you are pathetic, see this is why America is great, we actually have a sense of humor. Wherever you are from must have a bunch of people with sticks up their butts. And ACTUALLY if you knew YOUR facts, you would know that Rostropovich has been dead (rest in peace) since 2007. So the term necrophiliac could apply here. DUH united STATES of America just schooled you bitch.

  • @jramz91

If you see a video of Shirley Temple from her childhood, and it turns you on (she is in her 80s now), are you a pedophile or a gerontophiliac? Think about that for a minute...

  • @piontro Seriously do u have no life but to post inconsiderate things on this persons youtube channel?

  • @jramz91 i'm no necrophiliac, it's funny how people take such an innocent comment from a young girl and turn it into something evil and ugly, you have not LIVED if you haven't, as a child, had a fasination with someones head....

  • @EggieMeggieX Wtf? i wasn't even talking to you.

  • @EggieMeggieX You'd need to do it somewhere in private. Not while he's playing.

  • @EggieMeggieX Ha, ha...like it....me too...di

  • come on...is hair really that important...?!?! just let it go man. just let it go...

  • j'adore jouer la violoncelle, il est un trés bon instrument! voici une excellent composition.

  • What a great room in which to record these pieces.

  • le violon ça a un son crispant, mais ça, c'est beau, j'adore cet instrument !

    et quel talent !

  • its like a never ending song....or river...flowing through your head...personally i think that this be a slower and more relaxed song....smile rostropovich...you frown the whole time...

  • @EVANgenesisX Like the protagonist in the 2009 film "Black Dynamite," Rostropovich IS smiling. The idea here is that music is an auditory experience, not a visual one. The smile is omnipresent. Just listen for it.

  • I'm playing this for solo and ensemble this year. The smoothness in his playing, and his tone quality, is what I really admire about him. RIP, Mr.Rostropovich. May your soul still be with us through your music.

  • i gotta play this for grade 7 :(

  • you're fuckin lucky! :)

  • gah!!! damn arpegios lol cant spell

  • Il joue à la perfection...Incroyable...Il est un dieu!

  • Il était un dieu...Rostropovich will not be forgotten!

  • Mstislav Leopoldovitch Rostropovitch est un immortel pour tout violoncelliste...Rostropovitch UN DIEU!!!

  • @MlleDidoulou english please

  • @tututu000111222 I'm just saying he's like an immortal for all cellist ! he is a god !

  • Magic, a whole lot of magic. Plus just absolute perfection.

  • Polymath7........wow. I thought I "bsed" on here a lot, but you take the cake.

  • What a delicate portrait weaved by the Orthodox Cellist! A loss can never be equaled when it is of such magnitude as this. Regardless, he had his time and used it well. Perhaps he met Bruckner, Bach, Mozart, Mahler, Shostakovich, and Glinka in the heights. We can only hope so!

  • Le plus grand de tous les temps...

  • es lo mas hermoso que escuche en mi vida ..... nada me puede hacer sentir tan ....... no puedo no describir lo que me hace sentir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I adore this piece! But I'm playing it on viola, so it's not quite the same. =P But I adore Rostropovich, too. What a fabulous 'cellist. =]

  • Comment removed

  • ..........wow!

  • just perfect!

  • Wow. This is awesome, and all I have left is the second half left :)

  • BTW(by the way) He did a great job, but at :43 he slightly messed up. Im nothsting on him, actually, if that was me, I would mess up (in terms of sound and fluency, NOT notes) pretty much most of it. It was a minor detail i noticed.

  • it gives me goosebumps, splendid!

  • muito bom ,lindo

  • He. Is. Brilliant. Rostropovich is my new favorite cellist. (not that i had one before...)

  • He can play the cello.

  • I like the quick tempo. It gives the interpretation a fluidity and bouyancy.

  • i heard this song on an episode of 'House'. its so beautiful.

  • I'm pretty sure it was the prelude, and it was sort of chopped about, but yes, beautiful stuff.

  • no, that wasn't the prelude, it was the allemande.. the 2nd part of the `1st cello suite

  • This isn't the prelude, the house part had the prelude IIRC.

  • this is splendid !!!

  • how dare you have such infamous talk without little respect on this superb recording. For god's sake, above you is a cathedral and a genius who plays Bach, people, just don't insult.

  • You people need to stop wasting your time arguing on youtube. It may seem hypocritical for me to say so, but why waste your time.

  • It took me all of five minutes to post those comments, but may I ask; what are the criteria by which you decide whether an activity is a waste of time?

Do you by any chance own a set of golf clubs, a television -or for that matter a chessboard?

Have you ever spent in excess of three hours on a Sunday afternoon watching young, steroid-bloated ignoramuses fight over an inflated piece of rubber?

Because I would consider that a *superlative* waste of time.

  • ok u need to stop trying to waste ur time on commenting back. u posted like 3x more than kindfurryboy so im wondering what U do to waste time. go on youtube and try to pick a fight that ur going to lose?

  • With my limited ability to analyze the workings of your mind, you seem to believe that you, yourself, are intelligent. You use the vocabulary of a scholar, yet you surely know that your target audience is any random schmuck on YouTube. Therefore, by posting to reflect only your intelligence, you prove yourself as believing you are smarter than logic would dictate. According to studies, the most "incompetent" are ones who believe they are greater than reality. You fall into this category.

  • Well, I would expect the random schmucks who watch videos of *Rostrpovich* on Youtube to be at least somewhat more intelligent than the general poulation.

But you're right I suppose; as far as you or anyone else here is (or ought to be) concerned I'm just an internet wiseass.

My comments are written solely for my own amusement, and I don't expect anyone to take them any more seriously than I do.

  • I get this quite a lot, and frankly, it *really* gets on my nerves.

You bitch and whine that I've exceeded my alotment of polysyllabic words, and imply that my self-confidence is proof of my grandiosity with a feckless allusion to the Dunning-Kruger effect.

I say again, for the thousandth time, what really bothers you is the very fact that I should dare to harbor such a self-assesment, and neglect to conceal it.

Whether it is merited or meritorious is -to you- quite beside the point.

  • Ooops. That should read "merited or *meretricious*".

  • @polymath7 you can't do this and not expect people to get pissed!

  • @polymath7 Come again?

  • and your response is any better? lol

  • Trolls :/

  • C'est tres belle.

  • sempre tem um boiola que diz " muito rapido pra min ", vai la e toca melhor, Rostropovich toco otimo e não tenho nada a reclamar.

  • I love how people claim scientific credibility with annecdotal evidence! I think the videos of this guy playing bach are exceptional, at first listen I did think I would have preffered a slower tempo, but the quick pace grew on me, I love it.

  • beautiful...I'm kinda making it a goal to record a version of the Cello Suites with only my bass guitar. Bach's a genius (my fav composer) and Rostopovich does him justice :)

  • not to be mean but lets just stick it to the bowed instruments, although it would be kind of cool to hear it on the bass guitar, great idea though.

  • i completely understand where you're coming from...the transition from cello to bass guitar is not as seamless as i originally thought lol. it's still a goal im trying out tho, but we'll c where it goes.

  • Good for you dude! And good luck

  • a bit to fast for me

  • that's why it's amazing

  • Thats how its supposed to be played, they are 16th notes.

  • i said that i thought the tempo was a bit too fast

  • I'm stuck on the last half with the many minors, it is an awesome song.

  • I just love they way Rostropovich plays this piece! it is just absolutely astonishing! :D I'm playing this piece my self on viola, but its nothing compared to him!!!!

  • this is beatiful

  • Wow!

  • This is great but I really wish to find a slower playing of this... very hard to follow especially when trying to learn how to play the song.

  • Wow. Mstislav shreds.

  • Say what you will of the Iraq war and Haliburton; there is no finer cellist alive than Dick Cheney ;)

  • Ha! That's too funny!

    Dick Cheney... hahaha!

  • I think I found my new favourite instrument if ever I was to play one!

But seriously, it's almost as if if you haven't heard Bach, you haven't really lived yet!

  • Agreed on both counts. At thirty-three, it's far too late take for me to take up an instrument with any serious ambition in mind, but if granted a wish I would likely pick the cello.

Oh, and Bach. Quite possibly the single greatest musical genuis the human species has ever produced.

  • my friend, its never too late to take up an instrument.

  • never too late too learn something new

  • I.

    Alas, that's just not true.

Very few competition level performers began their intensive practice any later than the age of ten, and there's a reason for this,

    It's a matter of neuroplasticity.

I won't bore you with the details (unless you want me to) but in a nutshell, the costant practice at a young age in which calssical musicians engage doesn't just hone a procedural, skill, it actually rewires to a considerable extent parts of the brain that govern musical intelligence...

  • II ...and motor coordination.

In my thirty-third summer, I'm afraid it's simply too late for this extensive rewiring to take place; the window of opportunity has closed.

If you 'll remember my qualifying phrase, "with any serious ambitionn mind" it really is too late for me tyo take up an instrument.

It's a pity, for I supect I might have had considerable potential; though in saying so I suppose I sound a bit like the haughty lady De Berg in Pride and Prejudice: (cont.)

  • III.

"I should have been a great proficient, if I had learned."

I can live with this; I still have a 180 IQ and world-class artistic talent (and yes, I anticipate the "thumbs down" for my immodesty).

If anyone knows of a single example of a world-class instrumentalist (not a singer -the same neurological constraints do not apply) who bagan practice as an adult, I am most eager to hear of it, if only out of curiousity.
