  • I have been listening to this song for years, but up to now I haven't the faintest clue what the lyrics is all about. For years I have been singing the line "its a perfect wonder" . Great song though. The harmonies is ridiculous

  • i really love toots hibbert's voice!

  • Etty in the room a cry Mama say she must wipe her eye Papa say she no fi foolish like She never been to school at all It is no wonder Its a perfect ponder Why they were dancing in that bar room last night Johnson in the room a fret Uncle say he must hold up him head Aunty say she no fi foolish Like its no time fe his wedding day It is no wonder Its a perfect ponder Why they were dancing in that bar room last night One pound ten for the wedding cake Plenty bottle of cola wine
  • Oh man, such a great song and brings back fond memories of being a teenager in Kingston.

  • @redhills1971 a teenager!? ha ha. Man, I was like two (ok about 5). But those were the days. We were poor but so rich in other ways. Good food, clean water, nice rivers and beaches, running bare feet on 100 degrees F asphalt like it ain't nuthin. ha haa.

  • All I know is that it brings back memories of happier days in Kingston when I was a teenager, my cousins and I use to sing and dance to this when it first came out. Love Toots and the Maytals

  • The way they harmonise, you can tell they had worked together for a while. Pure quality!

  • check out all the guys in audience greedily trying to figure out how these guys make this sound! its just beyond them all! many of those guys are in their own bands, but are (at the time) band wagon followers, what they dont get is the fact that toots and the maytals were all long long experienced singers from way back, rythm and blues, rock n roll, blues, jump blues, western swing, and in particular doo-wop and gospel, where as many of the audience were jumpin on trend and in dark! WOW!

  • I saw the lyrics on the album. I read them here. And I still don't know what they're singing about. Nice song though. Great clips of Leslie Kong just before he died.

  • @deyoungaza

Johnston (man) is marrying Etty (woman) and they are getting some separate advice from their own relations.

There is plenty of Bottles of Cola Wine, (See Darganx. & Hozer 100 pefect explanations in here)

The wedding cake cost 1.10 and the people who are all dressed in white are ready to eat all that cake.(Known as The Johnston's Cake Bcus they will be married)

The Wedding will happen And btw did you see the couple dancing in The Bar-Room last night.

    They were Sweet & Dandy

  • i can't help to sing-along

  • @RareSnare: That's Leslie Kong, a well-known Jamaican reggae producer of Chinese origins. He has produced lots of great rocksteady and reggae tracks by artists such as Toots & the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker ,and even early Bob Marley.

  • Doesn't the Asian producer in this movie make you laugh? lol anyone knw the story behind that?

  • Asians Chinese/Indians have been in Jamaica since 1840. The ending of Slavery (1834) begun the era of the indentured labourer. The practice continued up until the beginning of the 1st world war ending around 1915. With a little history (knowledge), things that might appear funny are no longer humorous but make sense.

  • This is a clip from a film starring Jimmy Cliff called "Harder they come"ca 1972. IDK about the rest of that Leslie Kong bit. Good show, though... I think it's based on a true story. (Gotta check my sources)

  • Tanx, Darganx.

"Cola Wine" is an strong alcoholic drink disguised as a sweet refreshment, like a "Cuba Libre" or a "Screwdriver"...

Now everyone can enjoy the song even more :-)

  • This clip is from 'The Harder They Come'... still got the Soundtrack LP, signed by Jimmy Cliff himself!!!

    My most prized posession.

  • U jammy bastard! :) Is it an original pressing? I can't find one anywhere - only reissues from the 80's

  • I was entered (by my mum) into a kids talent competition in the early 70's - and reached the final!! Didn't win though but Jimmy Cliff was handing out the prizes which included a signed copy of the Soundtrack album from the man himself!!

My mum kept it from me for a good few years cos she knew I would draw all over it - just as well, it's in good condition in my own reord collection now.

  • I have ALWAYS wondered WTF the lyrics were... WHAT THE HELL is "cola wine"???

  • The Spanish would call it 'Cuba Libra'. Goes to your head subtly but quickly, like a Screwdriver.

  • me and my wife bounced back down the isle to this song

  • Perfect song

  • The funkmaster.

  • I LOVE roots reggae!!

  • I don't understand why they have subtitles for dis song.

  • These lyrics are nothing like I've been singing, usually after a few beers, for the past 25 years. I aint no Toots but I still prefer my version. After me " one more piece of the wedding cake plenky bokkle ah cola wine"

  • One Pound ten (shillings)=1.50 GBP, that's a pretty good deal on a wedding cake

  • Although that's 1.10/- = about $6.00 US in late sixties, maybe was a bit of scratch for the time...

  • LMAO

  • it is a wonder how this guy is so great. a roots man

  • I thought it was "He's a perfect partner"

  • please, which is the movie? tnx

  • THE HARDER THEY COME

  • Great song, are you sure its not while they were dancing in the BALL room last night? Whatever, I'm perfectly ok with mumbling my way through this song... cause it's that great.

  • could be I guess,i'ts a while since I did this now and the funny thing is right at the end of the song(1.10) it says ball room on the lyrics,so I may have been in 2 minds myself!

  • the way I hear the song, they met in the bar room and danced, now they gettin married (why dem a fret) but they drink cola wine now they happy to dance in the ball room at the wedding!

  • it is ball, not bar, ballroom. either way the shit rules so who really gives a shit? not me!

  • Me neither!

  • word.

  • what a lovely lively song|

  • Thanks for the subs, fantastic song and film :)

  • It's on the vinyl record sleeve - me pops have the album. Ponder makes sense, although pander is an interesting twist for a couple of different reasons. Very addictive song, tho.

  • you're mistaken it's a perfect "PANDER"

  • Thanks for the lyrics. I always thought it was "He's a perfect bounder." The perfect reggae song!

  • I love this song

The film is also great. You haffi watch it.

  • i've actually been singing most of the lyrics right, all this time...amazing. thanks for this!

  • Hookim Looks very young there

  • I've always just mumbled my way through lol

  • Thanks for the translation - still don't know what it means/ what is PONDER? Anyhow - just love that song

  • Ponder means to think/wonder/mull something over. Get a dictionary perhaps..

  • the song say's 'pander' not 'ponder'
