Hey there! Have you tried anxiety zero technique (I think its at anxiety0.info)? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my father pretty much cured panicks with it.
I (actually) have IST (Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia) with pre-hypertension. These are both genetic disorders and are controlled with medicine. But, sometimes, I get really terribly bad bouts of palpitations (mostly at night) and I get over worried about having a number of very nasty cardiac diseases (which I have tested negative for). I have Hypochondria as well as OCD, anxiety, PTSD, and Bipolar disorder. Finding other people out there like me really helps! <3
@irkofan The heart is a scary thing to have a condition with. I'm not sure what I have, but something with my heart is amiss. I've been terrified to see the doctor about it, but I will eventually. It may just be PVC related to Mitral Valve Prolapse which runs in our family. Amen to finding other people out there is helpful to us!
@bwelmhouse1 Definately get that looked at when you can. Heart problems, I learned, shouldn't be messed around with. At the very least, have ask for an EKG (it's not too expensive if you have it done in the office). My current beef is having all four of my wisdom teeth pulled. I am so not looking forward to it. X__x
@irkofan This is similar to me, i have a heart issue but not a coronary one. My doctor said it doesnt even cause heart attacks. I have been on the EKG 2 times andboth times normal. Doctors have listened to my heart plenty of times, even during a point where i SWORE i was going to have a heart attack and he just looked at me and said, buddy your perfectly fine. Despite all this I still worry about heart issues that are not there when I have pains or palpitations.
@christinemarie696 I would think that it would. I haven't really treated my hypochondria much, as the other anxiety has been more destructive in my life. I'm receiving CBT for the agoraphobia, which has helped me indeed. I would think that if CBT has helped my recovery from agoraphobia that it would probably help other types of anxiety, including hypochondria. And that's just my personal opinion.
@christinemarie696 Hi! I have had hypochondria since young kid. I kinda outgrew some of it as I entered adulthood. I still have it to some degree, but not too bad. Just gets to me sometimes. I have found that in the course of my therapy for the other aspects of my anxiety, that my hypochondria has improved. I'm not really getting treatment for it specifically, as my other anxieties are much worse, and therefore my priorities currently. The length of time to recovery varies individually.
I have the same symptoms it makes me nuts! I get this feeling where i feel like bugs are crawling under my skin and i feel like im always dizzy and that im going to pass out and i also get so agitated and im diagnosed as a hypochondriac
i so know what u mean but with my condition i always think its cancer. latly i cant go a day with out thinking im dieing. the more i watch of your videos the more i want to talk to you more alot of things you have gone threw i am going threw now and its varry scarry.
@sarahvida2009 Yeah, hypochondria can be very compelling and scary. But, with our anxious minds we tend to automatically think the worst thing possible. And I found that recognizing that, has helped me get a better grip on my worry-type thinking. I should do another video about hypochondria.
I'm sure I have Hypochondria, I wake up every morning feeling sick due to anxiety, and I cannot stomach food in the morning which makes it worse. I always feel like there is something wrong with me.. my girlfriend gets mad at me and says its in my head but I don't know how to fix it.
Absolutely! It's funny how sometimes bad things disappear when we're no longer afraid of them. I have noticed the tingling has gone away. Once I told myself that even if I did have my worst feared disease, it can't be cured anyway, so why worry about it. And once I lost the fear of it, the symptoms kinda like vanished.
I think I might partially have hypochondria. Whenever I have a sharp pain on the right side of my head I Google symptoms and people talk about how they have tumors and all that and I convince myself that I have a tumor. Or I might feel like I might have a brain aneursym at any given time and die out of no where. I also, like you, had sharp nerve pains in my left arm and elbow and my hands would shake, and I thought I had Parkinson's disease. I'm glad I'm not alone.
Hello. lol, im only 12, and i know this is completely ridiculous, but just a couple days ago i figured out i had hypochondria, i always worry, and i understand where u r coming from COMPLETELY! I always worry that i have cancer, or im going to die soon, but how i am trying to get over it is that lots of people have the same worries and we always get through it. Your not the only one :) dont feel alone :)
I had a CT scan done in Jan 2008, which came out normal - but I feel that something could have happened in between that time. It's scary. There's no one to talk to about it. Having hypochondria is like having the earliest bedtime in the whole world - except that no one knows you've gone to sleep.
Wow, that is scary! They won't let you get an MRI for peace of mind? Can you get a second opinion? Maybe another doctor would let you get that MRI if your current one is denying you of that.
I hope you read this. I too am experiencing tingling, pain, numbness all over my body. It happened four months ago and wouldn't stop - only disappearing for a few days sometimes and then returning. I had an extensive blood test done to rule out reumatism, thyroid and auto-immune diseases. The tests came back normal. I also had a stress test and heart exam - normal. I fear MS, in particular. My doctor says I should calm down - but I still want an MRI.
Do not be thrown by these symptoms or this experience. Once you begin to recover, the mind and body settle down and these overwhelming thoughts disappear, along with the anxiety condition.
Time is a great healer, especially concerning this condition. I allowed any thought to be there and I did not react. When I did this, I noticed the scary thoughts seem to lose their edge. Other symptoms that I experience before starting to vanish. There is no need to fight them or try and rid yourself of scary thoughts, just say: come if you wish, I no longer care.
good lord I am such a hypochondriac. I've gotten much better over the years, but when I was a kid it was out of control. But I will still fixate on imaginary illnesses.
You articulate the anxiety/hypochondriac relationship really well around 3:13.
Also, I used to get numb feelings in my hands/legs/face. I figured out that it was a product of anxiety. But yeah, it was pretty creepy.
Imagination is a great thing to have, but it can also get us into trouble by making up those imaginary illnesses and other anxieties. I got a good dose of hypochondria these past couple weeks. Not fun stuff.
That is exactly right! If you think about what goes through our minds during episodes of anxiety and panic, our most outrageous imagined scenarios are being played out in our minds. The most horrible outcomes that only our imaginations are cooking up for us to panic about. We just have to learn not to be tricked by these horrid thoughts. That's why they say intelligent, artistic and imaginative people are more prone to anxiety disorders.
I thought I was being a hypochondriac too and I know I am at times, but everytime I obsessed about something, the doctors found something significant. I think tho, I too, am a hypochondriac.
I admit, sometimes it's hard to know when to go to the doctor and when to know we're obsessing over something minor. If my hands start dropping things on their own, then I'm going to the doctor no matter what. But otherwise, I seem to have this thing under control.
I know. And I feel bad when I see the docs. They always get mad at me and say that I should have called sooner. Lol....but when I do go and it's nothing, I feel relief as well as embaressment. I think your plan is a good one.
I've watched some of your videos and I must say we share such similarities with our anxiety issues. It's kind of a comfort to know I'm not alone, though I'd never wish this on anyone.
I suffer lower back problems and am getting ready to see a doctor about it as my mobility is now affected. I feel off-balance and that sensation alone scares me. I am also worried about going into the hospital for testing. But I may have to suck it up and do whatever it takes to get my independence back again.
Definitely a challenging situation. See it as your opportunity to desensitize to hospitals. Not an easy thought, but look forward to the reward at the end. You'll be that less anxious about hospitals. Just remember it's more effective when combined with positive thinking and reassuring statements to yourself.
Hey Seth..Another great video :-) ...I used to get RSI..(repetitive strain injury)when I was learning my guitar a few years ago and using the mouse ...you have to rest your arm/hands for them get better ..as soon as you feel your hands/arms starting to ache you have to rest them in order for them to get better.... which they will do if you rest them..it is really painful and the pain will get worse if you don't rest them when they start hurting.. .Hope this helps ..take care ! x..
Yep...it's our constant focusing on every little symptom that pops up that causes the anxiety and possibly the physical symptoms. Now, you mentioned, you had another layer of anxiety about going into hosp. but for me I actually get relief from getting tests done or seing the doc. I have realised that I was panicking over every symptom and am being more careful about not using the doctor or testing to relieve my anxiety Health anxiety was acutally what caused me to become agoraphobic. great video.
I see. I nearly got to the point where I said, screw it, I'll put up with the hospital to get these tests over with to ease my mind. But my therapist cautioned against doing that. As a way of giving in to my anxiety. But if it starts really interfering with activities too much, I'll go anyway. Like typing this is a bit painful. I'll be buying one of those "folded" keyboards for people with carpal tunnel.
but that's just it..you don't want to become obsessed with getting every medical test in the book but if it does continue to bother you it can't hurt to have some testing. maybe try some range of motion exercises. Like, making a fist and releasing.
Oh yeah, I'm building my arsenal of exercises, buying elbow braces, and modifying my ergonomics because everyday my dominant arm/hand is getting worse. It relieved me to know that my dad had this problem too at one time. I do A LOT of computer work, so I'm rearranging my work station.
I have to catch up I missed your last video , but I'm sorry you went through a rough time. I can totally relate to you're worries about having a terrible disease. I have had ongoing stiffness/numbness on my left side especially from my knee down. I had a doppler study/ultrasound and there are no visible clots but I was wanted to make sure. The left side worries me of course, because of the heart. But, like you said, it can be something less threatening and more common like arthritis or carpal. t
no. I was thinking that could be an option though. I have lower back issues that might contribute to the left leg numbness. But the arm and hand stiffness is probably arthritis. My doctor said disc pressure shouldn't cause numbness/stiffness in the arm. I have to tell myself almost every day that the numbness isn't life threatening.
I'm sure if he thought it was serious like MS or something, he'd be sending you to a neurologist by now. But yeah, could be a pinched nerve in the lumbar region. Who knows. Could be many things.
yeah..MS has been ruled out. I had a brain Mri when I got really sick two years ago. I've been to two neurologists and the last time I went to look into lyme disease as a possible cause. Long story short, I ruled out the biggies. it's probably a pinched nerve. Oh i've had facial numbness before too that could be anxiety. I know I get that every once in awhile.
Palpitations are at the root of my anxiety and I dont know how to live with it..HELP
