One thing that Ustad Tari has over every other Tabla player I know is that he sings absolutely beautifully aswel. The man is Truly and undeniably gifted !
Another technique that he could be using is the three finger titekite which I think is slightly more difficult. Thats style is typical of the Lucknow gharana and I think Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri is the king of that style. There is another video on youtube of Pandit Ramesh Mishra accompanying pandint swapan chaudhuri at the Piyasi festival in Kolkata. He plays a traditional Lucknow Kaida that has the theme "Tak dhene tak". Extremely difficult gat. Just search for "tak dhene tak". u should find it
I read all the comments and ppl seem to be amazed at how he plays the consequitive titekites. its a simple and intelligent technique but takes some practice. He plays the first note of titekite with the middle finger, the second note with the index finger, then kite as usual and then in the second cycle, its the index finger that begins the note. I hope thats clear.
@falsetruth1 The Carvin mic, model number of which I can't remember, is an electronically-simulated tube mic. The mic pair on Rameshji's sarangi are both R0DE NT5's (awesome electret mics!). I'm not sure Carvin still make that mic, but I can dig up the model if you really want to know it. ;-)
@shankyxyz I had a much slimmer stereo mic there before, and Ustadji was not happy with the sound. Finally, I brought out the aluminum case with this Carvin mic in it and the rest is history. It bothers me to this day that the mic obscures the instruments in the side shots. My shots from the front are the only ones that afford a full view. Interestingly, Ustadji was more concerned that we could see his expressions and body language than the tabla! We struck a balance for the DVD.
Unbelieveble atmosphere... I want, to listening this once again and more... I wish to be there, feel this culture, that smiling people, everything is more authentic, than in our european, global plastic "culture".
You understand what I appreciate about it, then. The same goes here in the U.S. Everything is rock bands and little cultural appreciation. Even the Western classical scene seems less inviting than Hindustani classical. This style is so warm, inviting, personal, intimate and unpretentious.
yes u r absolutely right,in indian and pakistani cultures it takes very long to be a good and great artist, not like in america where u just keep playing guitar like a crazy.and people will say u r just great.
This is the spoken language of tabla. These syllables are called bhols and each one represents a stroke on the tabla. Some of them represent two-hand strokes, while some represent a stroke of a single hand on one of the tabla.
This is the most efficient way for masters to communicate their teachings to their students and pass them down through time. It makes sense to use spoken sounds to pass along techniques.
Listen to what he speaks, then watch and listen as he plays what he just spoke.
