  • i got this cd in karachi, pakistan!! ustad tari khan is amazing

  • Really unforgettable performance by Ustad ji

  • Another technique that he could be using is the three finger titekite which I think is slightly more difficult. Thats style is typical of the Lucknow gharana and I think Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri is the king of that style. There is another video on youtube of Pandit Ramesh Mishra accompanying pandint swapan chaudhuri at the Piyasi festival in Kolkata. He plays a traditional Lucknow Kaida that has the theme "Tak dhene tak". Extremely difficult gat. Just search for "tak dhene tak". u should find it

  • I read all the comments and ppl seem to be amazed at how he plays the consequitive titekites. its a simple and intelligent technique but takes some practice. He plays the first note of titekite with the middle finger, the second note with the index finger, then kite as usual and then in the second cycle, its the index finger that begins the note. I hope thats clear.

  • Gr8 performance Ustaad Ji..

  • Everyone's hypnotized...

and the two guys in the extreme left seem to be floating over the sweetness of the strokes...

  • @shaan2585 that's what she said

  • Intelligent use of Terekete...

  • Ustadji is just awsome...btw Mark, what mics have you used?

  • @falsetruth1 The Carvin mic, model number of which I can't remember, is an electronically-simulated tube mic. The mic pair on Rameshji's sarangi are both R0DE NT5's (awesome electret mics!). I'm not sure Carvin still make that mic, but I can dig up the model if you really want to know it. ;-)

  • damn that stupid black mike, cant see anything on his dayan face when he is playing...

  • @shankyxyz I had a much slimmer stereo mic there before, and Ustadji was not happy with the sound. Finally, I brought out the aluminum case with this Carvin mic in it and the rest is history. It bothers me to this day that the mic obscures the instruments in the side shots. My shots from the front are the only ones that afford a full view. Interestingly, Ustadji was more concerned that we could see his expressions and body language than the tabla! We struck a balance for the DVD.

  • tari khan is very good tabla player and his a legent tabla player

  • wow awsomeee

  • tari bhai is great tabla player and great persnalty and my best friend

  • He looks like a classic rocker, along with Zakir Hussain who looks like Sir Jimmy Page.

p.s. godly playing. but that goes without saying.

  • wahhh ustad jan

  • meri jaan hai tari ji ............keya hi baat hai inki

  • It stops your breath and plays at your soul

  • Hmmm... something is in the air... ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • superb!!

  • WAH, KEYA BATT, WAH !! :D

  • wohh wahta true soung clear tirekete

  • kyabaat

  • Unbelieveble atmosphere... I want, to listening this once again and more... I wish to be there, feel this culture, that smiling people, everything is more authentic, than in our european, global plastic "culture".

  • You understand what I appreciate about it, then. The same goes here in the U.S. Everything is rock bands and little cultural appreciation. Even the Western classical scene seems less inviting than Hindustani classical. This style is so warm, inviting, personal, intimate and unpretentious.

  • yes u r absolutely right,in indian and pakistani cultures it takes very long to be a good and great artist, not like in america where u just keep playing guitar like a crazy.and people will say u r just great.

  • Very true, very true

  • TARI is si great ! I love his play (and the humoristic style )

  • great master

  • Can anyone write down the bols of the kaida please? Thanks

  • dhagena dhatirkit gina dhina, dhatirkit tina gina

dhagena dhatirkit gina dhina, tirkit tirkit dhagena gin tina kina, dha gher-nag ting ting tina and then the khali

  • is it from some spoken language? can one translate it into some "living" language?

  • This is the spoken language of tabla. These syllables are called bhols and each one represents a stroke on the tabla. Some of them represent two-hand strokes, while some represent a stroke of a single hand on one of the tabla.

This is the most efficient way for masters to communicate their teachings to their students and pass them down through time. It makes sense to use spoken sounds to pass along techniques.

Listen to what he speaks, then watch and listen as he plays what he just spoke.

  • my friend this is his master they went threw the ceremony

  • oye lut gaye hum....BOW TO YOU !!!!

  • Amazing! Such complexity played so effortlessly. Kyaa Baat Hai!

  • Keya baath..... Ustad ji. Enjoyed it very much.

  • hello i live in germany and i want to buy this cd from usatd tari khan where can i buy this cd == pls write back thx !!!

  • We are investigating international distribution currently.

  • The CD will be released tomorrow (June 7, 2008). We have been taking orders at

    DarkAgeRecords dott com

There have been many inquiries about the video. The entire event was captured in High-Definition.

Depending on the interest in this CD, we will determine if the great expense of producing the video is warranted.

If you are a fan of Tariji, then pick up ten of these CDs to share with your friends! It's the best way to help us keep producing amazing recordings like this.

    More to come...

  • IS Ustad Tari ji's cd available in Indian stores in the United States or only on your website?

  • Fair Enough, but you have to make it availble by other means aswell. Like sell them at ustad ji's concerts and so on. More promotion has to be done.

  • They will be available at his performances. Ustadji just got his personal stash of CDs on the 7th, in fact. We are looking at other ways of making it available as well as other means of promotion. YouTube is only the beginning.

We had a beautiful CD release event at a private home near Dallas on Saturday. I personally left at almost 4:30 a.m. Ustadji sang and played tabla. Amazing event that filled the entire house! Ustadji left about the same time I did. There is no stopping him!

  • He is a master no doubt, but it is the fact that he is a musician's musician that gives him such a high rank in my heart. His concert series in toronto this past month was mind blowing, and I hear there is a tabla solo concert coming up in october in Toronto. His tabla is honest, raw, medieval and oveloaded with expression. One of the greatest hands the tabla and Indian classical percussion has won.

  • Thats just Great

  • DO you by any chance know if this cd has already been released? Thank You

  • Wah wah superb tabla...what raga is the nagma based on any1?

  • subhannallah kya baathai
