Hm, tbh this boss and the one in VIP 2 keep making me think of K'Rool from DKC 2. You don't have a lot of hits but it's like a freakin' endurance match.
Hn. This is my (really bad) attempt at translated some text boxes.
The red text reads: "... Nogasan... Omae dake wa..." Search me as to what "nogasan" refers to, but the other part reads, "You're just..."
The battle text says: "(Boon face) Bikibiki-- Detteiu ni te wo dashita koto yurusano! Ikuzo!" Also no idea about "bikibiki." Probably a sound effect given the nature of Japanese sound effects. The battle text says something like, "Detteiu is in the hands of another, give up! Let's go!"
The whole no savestates rule turned this LP upside-down from VIPs 2 and 3. In every single aspect.
74 videos as opposed to the 47 in VIP 2 & 3.
Yeeeah...maybe pick a less gimmicky hack to do savestateless. I stilll thought this was pretty cool though. The story actually got my attention, which is really saying something.
Too bad it's not really prevalent till the end of the game though.
Well if you're talking about the mask showing up, that happening, as well as the whole boss battle and music as well is from an SNES RPG called Romancing the SaGa 2. The final boss is several demons (or bosses I can't quite remember) formed together in a cloud like it has been portrayed here. Without the mask they cannot survive together. I haven't played the game in a while so don't assume I'm perfectly correct. But I'm pretty close. :P
oh and apparently that final message block is a reference to romancing saga 2 as well. you get that same message if you try to leave the final room. :overanalyzing a romhack:
I suspect that you're not liking these kinds of bosses because you're using save states. So every time you load a state, the fact that you have to wait for *the weapon* becomes emphasized, and then you might begin to wonder why they couldn't just do away with things because the randomness is so pronounced.
TBQH, you seem to be getting a little... whinier (for lack of a better word) as time passes. Maybe it's because of the whole challenge thing (stupid post limit)...
Maybe it's because you somehow got into and learned about Japanese memes between last year and this year. The thing is that your usage of "Carol boss" is so frequent that it seems like a curse or an excuse.
I don't mean to come off as really negative, but I watch this video and realize that your first one was way better. You were less legalistic about "challenges" and you just did whatever and there was no implication that you were trying to satisfy specific people's demands.
On another note, I'm pretty sure the boss is supposed to mimic the behaviour of the Seven Heroes in RS2. I haven't played it myself, but apparently every part attacks at every turn and stuff. Also, K. Rool was almost exactly the same deal, several times.
The term "Carol boss" is kind of overplayed by this point, I'd agree, especially since that's what the ORIGINAL Super Mario World final boss was, really - waiting for Bowser to toss out his freaking mechakoopas. Then again, the TSRPR final boss seemed rather... less tense, considering how difficult the final stages were? So maybe Carol - even if his/her level design needs more work and less DKC plagarism/ASM hacking - has the right idea for bosses.
I kinda have to 100% agree with you here. This VIP4 run through had a distinct 'oh no I have to do what other people want' vibe to it, and I find my own videos a lot harder to enjoy towards the end.
I'm planning on return to a more freeform style with RttC for that very reason.
I think the turning point was just about the time you stopped having fun doing it with restrictions. :C TSRPR is a lot more condusive to the savestateless style of play, or maybe even something on the easier side like Rob-Omb's Quest.
You finally did it Raocow! Next time you try and attempt something completely save-stateless remind me to slap you with a rubber bag filled with rancid milk :D
I know it sucked some of the fun out of it near the end, but in my opinion because the lack of save stating early and levels taking up a whole video, it really gave this LP the epic feel you were going for in the first place. It feels like you've been doing VIP 4 for a year.
Does anyone know if this was released before or after Carol's cheep demo? Beacuse this boss reminds me a lot of that demo's unfinished Koopa Kid fusion boss...
4:56 The guy that appeared... kind of reminds me of pedobear.

Vip4 was released before the Cheep Demo. This was probably made not only for Vip4 but also to work up to bigger fusion bosses, etc.
