Lugosi's career was in the gutter due to him being typecast as a Horror Villain, and his accent limited the roles he was given by Universal later in his career. By the time the other Dracula movies had come out, Karloff and Chaney were Universal's top horror stars, while Lugosi was reduced B-Movies and Name Value Cameos. He did return as Dracula in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, the second and last time he'd ever played Dracula on film and his last A-List film
I think you're right about Chaney playing the "everyman". He got an Oscar nomination, I believe, playing Lenny in "Of Mice And Men", only a few years prior to The Wolfman.
While people are talking about Dracula '92, I'd just like to say that it's one of my favorite movies. To me, nothing beats the special effects of the 90's. It was a time when most special effects were still optical illusions, instead of CGI. Those older effects, I feel, age a lot better over time and have a peculiar charm.
Actually the 1931 Dracula movie is based more on the Dracula theater play which was rather popular at the time. There are some notable differences between the play and the book, but since the play was popular and it is more easy to convert a play into a film than a book, that was used as a screenplay for the movie. The Dracula movie which matches the book most closely is the 1992 Coppola version.
@Venefica82 Yeah, I realize my facts were a bit rusty on that point...I probably should have re-watched the documentary on the set before the review. Thanks for the clarification! The 1992 version was amazing visually, though I felt the cast was very hit and miss (with the obvious exceptions of Oldman and Hopkins, of course, who seldom disappoint).
@Zaranyzerak I agree about the 1992 version. It is a stunning movie but not all the actors seam to fit, they do a good job but they do not seam to fit somehow. But Oldman and Hopkins were great. And the visuals and the costumes are just wonderful. I remember how I begged my mother to let me see that movie. I was ten when the 1992 Dracula came out and it is one of my favorite movies, though it is not without it's flaws.
In my opion lon chains best rules were as quasdimo which I had sad to say have not seen. But I did she a few years ago the other thing he was big for. i never knew about the spanish version of it until this years cinemassacres monster madness ya know the site that owns the avgn around halloween where james reviews horror movies old and new and 80s yeah good shit man good shit
Why dont you have The Mummy - The Legacy Collection, Invisible Man - The Legacy Collection and Creature from the Black Lagoon - The Legacy Collection?
I DO have them, just in the process of watching them so I'm not going to review them until I'm done. There's 27 movies over the course of the whole collection, and even though most of them are pretty short (barely over an hour much of the time), it still takes time to watch that many in a row...
Love what the black & white effect does for ya Sean just the right amont of spokky great stuff! Dacula scared the living crap out of me as young one hehe
Hey man, I love your reviews (*****), but I think you are being a bit unfair to Bela and his portrayal of Frankenstein's Monster; as when he way playing the part the script called for the Monster...TO BE BLIND! Unfortuantely for Lugosi, the entire storyline of the Monster's blindness (a carry over from the previous film in the series) was edited out of the final cut of the film. Hence the character's blindness explains Lugosi's exaggerated performance and lurching about of the screen.
Quite true! All due to a botched brain transplant in the previous installment. Apparently The Monster originally had several speaking parts in Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman as well, which actually would have inked it up nicely with the previous one - having the Monster speaking with Ygor's voice, but for reasons unknown they hit the cutting room floor. As with my statement about Lon Chaney Jr. as Dracula, ditto my feelings about Bela as The Monster. Love him, but think others did it better.
I wish that the aformentioned speaking parts HAD been left in, I think it would have added a lot to the character, and that installments' place in the overall saga.
And a HAPPY HALLOWEEN to you and yours as well! :D
I agree totally regarding Chaney's rather doughy faced Alucard/Dracula; Lon Jr. did much better as an average everyday Joe who has had something "unnatural" happen to him; i.e. THE WOLF MAN (though his Mummy performances were rather effective).
As his Monster role is so completely related to his performance in one one of the greatest roles of his career, Ygor in SON/GHOST, I would have paid ten times what I did for the Frankenstein Legacy set if it had included Lugosi's original uncut performance of the Ygor/Frankenstein Monster. As his Ygor was so incredible (I would honestly rank it with his Dracula), I believe it is impossible to give Bela a fair hearing on the abomination that the studio perpetrated against his performance...
Jeeze, no wonder people used to call you Satan, the lighting gives you devil horns over your eyebrows! =P
Good idea with the black & white, it made this review 10x more awesome! And I learnt alot about the Dracula movies....Which I still have yet to see. =[
Is there any reason why Legosi didn't play the Dracula in son of dracula or any other sequels?

That's why the DVD review is in color. These are about the movies themselves, not the DVDs. That's why I did everything separate.
