Since we always define ourselves as the only animals that have a "conscience", I assume we need another way to just know when we like someone. It is such a complex process that it has to be this way. Yes, sometimes we can't help but look at someone for more than a second and be caught staring and thats when we quickly look away to make sure we don't make that same fatal mistake with our eyes!! @arviagent13 there's really no difference between what either of us said - I guess youve just gotta use your own instincts to figure it out. I tend to keep taking quick glances at guys who are looking at me much the same way a gazelle would glace at a tiger if they were at the same watering hole. You know, kinda wary. From what other shy girls have commented on here some are giving a slightly 'come hither' look and then looking away. With us shy people the difference is probably very subtle.

How does the awkward "look down look back" way of communicating indicate that a girl really wants to talk to you? I do that with everyone new that I meet, purely because it feels too intense staring relentlessly into someone's eyes while you talk to them, and looking away all the time is just rude and aloof - it's just trying to get a balance, not flirting.

So I'm in a class and this really cute girl sits next to me (there was not a lot of seats) and almost the whole time she was looking away from me (it's a class for homeschoolers so every one there was REALLY shy) and at first I thought she hated me for some reason and then I got really calm and happy-ish and realized her arm was pressed against mine. @Lucentia3: I don't think humans ever had animal instinct. Since we always define ourselves as the only animals that have a "conscience", I assume we need another way to just know when we like someone. It is such a complex process that it has to be this way. Now the media could have screwed us all up into thinking that girls have to be passive and the boy has to always make the first move. No idea. If a girl is shy, there is probably little to no chance I'll talk to her being that I would be expected to leave her alone. My thing is..screw the media and find the girl who goes with her natural gut. There are a few out there, but a girl with confidence is worth more than one who is "too shy" or too influenced by the media to say anything.

@Lucentia3 I concur. I do it ALL the time unconciously and it's soooo annoying! Yes, sometimes we can't help but look at someone for more than a second and be caught staring and thats when we quickly look away to make sure we don't make that same fatal mistake with our eyes!! The "look away again" gesture is to indicate that "sorry I meant to look over this way, oops" NOTHING ELSE!! O.o I've had one too many cringe-worthy experiences... with using just my eyes.

@arviagent13 there's really no difference between what either of us said - I guess youve just gotta use your own instincts to figure it out. I tend to keep taking quick glances at guys who are looking at me much the same way a gazelle would glace at a tiger if they were at the same watering hole. You know, kinda wary. From what other shy girls have commented on here some are giving a slightly 'come hither' look and then looking away. With us shy people the difference is probably very subtle.
