I just watched the movie today. It was great! I loved it!
But i was wondering if anyone knows where a full list of ALL the songs in the movie are. I saw some online credits that just said the bands/artists who made the songs, but I was looking for the song names also. If anyone knows where I can find the names of the songs that would be great. Thankyou!
The discussion began with ancient Greece...objectification itself as concept is one that is derived from philosophy and the ideas have been around since we have been.
i just watched this. it was pretty interesting and thought provoking. If you have a netflix account you can watch it free on the website. if you want to watch it and dont have an account let me know and i can give you my account info
I think next step is going to the backgrounds. In simple words, a film about the Bauhaus and how and why design became an exclusive category for the privileged ones, from the good idea to make things handy, beauty and accesible for everyone.
The DVD is still not available. Gary Hustwit is travelling the world to showcase the movie. I got to meet him and saw the movie here in Montreal. Gary told me that the DVD will be available around August. I seriously hope you guys will like it, I loved it. Eye-opening.
It sounds promising as a subject, but I worry that it will be some exaltation of designers who often don't deserve it. If it's all about that object of desire and how it is marketed, I'm not interested. If it's about how marketing, and engineers, and even visionaries (or designers!) can get it wrong, as well as sometimes right, then that would be worth seeing and promoting.
Objectified is the second part of a 3-film design trilogy. Helvetica was the first part, and Gary just started on the third film... No details about the subject matter yet. Anyway, they're supposed to be linked aesthetically.
I saw "Helvetica" and I liked it a lot, but this looks like "Helvetica 2." I understand there's such a thing as style, but this film appears it was shot EXACTLY like Helvetica. Even the music sounds the same. I know you can't change much when you're filming a documentary, but, c'mon, change something!
Maybe I'm being overcritical, but these are my first impressions of the film.
I agree. It's pretty much is exactly the same, but you have to understand that documentaries are more about the content. So I think people will still appreciate Objectified. And besides, at least it's a nice clean style, right? ha.
hehehe I saw this at a screening in Chelsea London a few weeks back, and yeh, Jonny Ive was there, so of course I shook has hand and said hello :) No jokes!
Apparently Stephen Fry was in the Audience too?... nice.
Really looking forward to seeing this movie. Greetings from Product Design UCA. The song is "I Like Van Halen Because My Sister Says They Are Cool" by El Ten Eleven.
I'm torn. I absolutely loved Helvetica, and have a great interest in industrial design, but I also have have a problem with the mindless consumerism we're plagued with these days. It doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the film (I will likely go see it, with great pleasure as well), just a greater concern that looms above it.
you really need to wait and see the film... it doesn't just glamorize the objects, it's a conversation that looks at consumerism, identity, sustainability, etc...
i cant believe this actually happend in real like.. haha its kinda one of those things you have see to believe and i saw but im not sure i believe it.. but still its amazes me lol,
WHO CAN HELP ME TO WRITE DOWN THE TRANSCRIPS OF THIS VEDEO,i am an english learner,i just can hear some sentence clear.this is what i can hear clear.<helpwhen you see an object ,you make so many insumtions about that object in seconds what it does?**? how would i gonna do it **,how much things could it cost***.The object testifies to people it's transformed by man ****
English is not my native tongue, nor am I a teacher, but this is what I have made of it...
"When you see an object, you make so many assumptions about that object.
In seconds. What it does. How well its gonna do it. How much you think it should cost. The object testifies to the people that conceived it, developed it, manufactured it...
Sometimes we know who these designer are, sometimes we dont. But anything that is touched by men, is transformed by men, is by its very nature design."
Ultimately, my job as a designer is to look into the future. You know, my job is about what is going to happen and not what has happened. All these physical objects in our lives. There is no real critic on them. Very, very little discussion on how these things really really affect us."
I assume that it means: "how well the object is going to do, whatever it is designed to do". For example:, "How well is a camera going to take a picture?"
The song is I Like Van Halen Because My Sister Says They Are Cool by our friends El Ten Eleven, from their new record These Promises Are Being Videotaped

Looking great, Gary. Although the material was shot before much discussion around the economic downturn, I am interested to see how future sentiments will be conveyed by some of the featured designers.
I understand your perspective, but I think the context of economic climate will continue to be a relevant factor into the design choices that companies like Apple make. It's not just about keeping an "absurdly expensive" premium. Marc Newson and Karim Rashid still rely on clients, and I fear they won't be the first people called upon to help companies innovate out of a downturn.
glad to see Hustwit continuing his trend of design edited to techno-music. The Helvetica screening at Pratt was one of the most awesome things ever, here's hoping I get to see this without dropping 10 bucks on it.
I'll be interested to hear what impression people have of the industrial design profession after watching this film. I wish I could say I was optimistic, but all I can muster is: I'm hopeful.

Cheap minded people will always be cheap no matter what the state of the economy is.
Apple clearly showcasing this all these years and something is telling me that they will keep doing the same thing.
Apple's products seem absurdly expensive compared to the competition and still manage (!?) to be top sellers on the their respective markets.
