Lol who said bits are cruel, they are inanimate objects, unless someone throws one at you they will not hurt you, admitantly some people are cruel and by coincidence use bits, however some people are also murderers and use knives to stab people however I wouldn't say knives are cruel, I use them to chop carrots for my horses LOl

Bits pulling the horse's chin up to his shoulders in unnatural poses - just for bragging rights and a pretty ribbon.
Jumping them making the horse's forelegs prone to early injuries.
There are more natural, loving ways to enjoy a horse and vice~versa.
OK, sorry for the downer - I just hate them made to doggie tricks - often pain and humiliation these magnificent creatures have to endure is so not necessary.
A lot of horses love to jump. I mean, honestly love it. Like, they can't wait to get out there and jump. Sometimes, the horses hate it, and they shouldn't be made to do something they hate.

see you got it all wrong if you got on a horse without a bit it wouldnt feel a contact get scared run off and probably hurt itself and as long as its fitted right then there fine ok
they CAN be torture if you use them wwrong! i use a bit to control my pony. they also have rediuluously gentile bits that makes it almost impossible to cause any damage with. i also ride in a bitless so i know a lot about this stuff. i know people who have used bits to abuse a horse but that's doesnt always happen if you know what you're doing and are compassionate
@tummyissues17 personally believe a bit should never be used if one needs it to control the horse. I personaly only find use in one when the horse is fully trained and needs a refined touch for higher schooling. I like Bent Branderup's method a lot. He always does the full basics with a cavesson and finishes up with a curb.
Do agree though that when the horse has been used to respect pain alone it takes some training with 2 reins (bit and halter/cavesson) before they decide to cooperate painless
Actually, bits can be held with any amount of force and at any position - holding your reins up really high and strong can hurt them, but I hold mine tight enough so that I can control my horse, but loose enough that he can put his head in any position. You can also get bits covered in rubber so they are just like a chew toy or with little wheels on that they can play with.
As for jumping, I always put boots on my horse, and he loves jumping! There is a log at the edge of his field and he ...
... always jumps it by himself because he absolutely loves it! You can see the joy shining in his eyes! Plus, when horses are in pain, they flatten their ears and roll their eyes. My horse has never done this in reaction to his bit.

thats what i got wiv my dad, id loaned ponies, but never for long, cuz my dad spazzed, until one day, he sold his car, and gave my mum the money, and we went out and found Melody, then i got Blade 3 years on, its amzing, as soon as ytou can, dont hold up , find the right horse, youll love it, im not like bragging or nothin btw lol, sum peeps get like that on here lool
Perhaps you could look into horse share?It is MILES cheaper, and you're only responsible for caring for the horse while you're there. No vet bills, farrier bills, dentist bills, clipper bills, buying rugs, buying tack, re-proofing rugs, feed, livery e.t.c.
