  • great drill. Only exceptional players will be able to push of the bag and make a great throw moving backwards. Billy Ripken was a damn good MLB second baseman. You develop fundamentals and then your instincts take over during the game. That's why you take extra reps so you can learn and get used to both.

  • I hate these vids, no one ever considers leftys

  • @TheFingerboarder101 cuz leftys dont play second base let alone short or third

  • bye God bless you much hope your support, thanks:)

  • if it ygual because I'm not playing because of that but healing please God willing if I can give some help call me at 8295180837 to communicate God bless you bye ...

  • hello my name is steven shortstop baseball game but I'm not playing because I have a problem with the kidneys but soon if God wants to heal and when to heal bolber want to play baseball, I need to know if any of you have a baseball program and I can train like I have 17 years mido shortstop tall as 6 feet is not something normally desir mido by uqe as I've never measured but hey I measure more or less 5:11 or 6 feet Aparo regular, regular run before regular batting Nose was hitting a lot but now

  • Ripken is teaching them right, but pretty much every kid did NOT take there right foot to the ball, and when they did it was about 3 inches away from the bag allowing them to still get taken out by a base runners slide.

  • I don think you should stay on the bag that long your gunna get cleated.. Idk maybe I'm wrong but thats what it looks like from my perspective

  • @knightsnumber22 Bouncing backwards is slower, by coming forward you take away travel time of the ball in the air. bouncing backwards the ball has to travel further to get to you.

  • that first kid woulda got owned by a runner sliding

  • through high school the runner must slide straight into the base and may not over slide the base. the only place that a middle infielder is in danger is if he is directly in front of the bag on the first base side. cal is teaching good stuff!

  • The pivots Cal made on the balls straight to him & to his left are cross over pivots which gives him foot to bag stability & momentum towards 1st. & gets him out of a runners way, it is great for those with weak arms, my favorite when I can execute it. I like to work my left foot more off the infield side of the bag to get more direction to 1st. Cal had plenty of time before he received the ball at the bag, on close plays one may need to catch the ball before the bag.

  • Where I learned from

    youtube dot com/watch?v=cEkgZgOongE

It's magical..U won't see this in the major leagues

  • I always try to go late and go running through the bag without stopping

  • I think overall this is a good fundamental video, however, I saw an error most of you saw. As the kids get older, the base runner will try to take them out (break up the double play) so you have to make sure you are out of the way. And, as a second baseman I personally find that a lot of times it is easier to bounce backwards from the bag rather than coming through it. This gives you something to push off of to make a harder throw to first. However, I'm not gonna argue with a Ripken. =)

  • @knightsnumber22 Yeah i noticed the same thing. I had to learn that the hard way so they have to learn to move out of the way

  • @knightsnumber22 i couldn't agree with you more! i play 2B for my high school team and not only does it help make a harder throw but i find it help make the motion a lot smoother and fluid

  • @knightsnumber22 Definitely- the stepback throw is much more effective if you have quick hands and are camped out on the bag. It also takes you out of the baseline and you avoid hitting the runner with the throw. At higher levels, some runners will not only slide hard to break it up, but they'll stay high if they know they're out to block the throw. And Ripken was better at third anyway.

  • @knightsnumber22 as a fellow 2B I agree completely. I never come across the bag unless I have to.

  • cant argue with the iron man of baseball. seemed like this never got him out of a game.

  • u only drag step if you are at short stop u stay on with your left foot and step back with your right avoiding the runner

  • its verry good.. they are small childrens they are not breaking dobble plays yet and even if they are you got to be smart to have a jump over or on the slider to avoid braking your legs and maybe even take revenge giving him some pain...

  • wooooo ripken stadium... pretty good stadium for single a

  • You keep teaching them like that, they are going to have broken legs from getting slid into. You wait slightly behind the bag and as the throw comes in, you drag step over the bag, throwing to first with the same momentum.

  • you don't always have to hop over second. You can hop off backwards as well and personally, that is easier to do at second than time the throw, catch while going forward, plant and throw. Or if you're in a hurry you might as well just chuck it from where you stand.

  • I disagree with temetito

  • I agree bad coaching

  • that's wrong...do that in a real game, and you'll see how the will brake your legs off.........you don't wait on the base, you wait not too far behind, but rather close to it, where you could also adjust when they trow comes.....but to that, and you won't have legs for a pretty long time....

  • I disagree... you have to realize this to teach young players proper mechanics and footwork... (repetition) I don't know how often you will ever be there just hanging out on the bag waiting for the throw. GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!

  • Your word placement is messing me up a bit, but I think you're saying waiting right on top of the bag=lots of spiking.

  • Nice

  • like it!

  • Great teaching video!!.....a must have!

  • very very nice...
