Scheff normally stinks it up pretty bad but he did a good job that night. It also helped that they kept Champlin away from the microphone for the most part.
Another thing that I really like about this performance is that they sing into mics that are static and on stands. The headsets just don't work for me...too Hollywood. This is such a good performance. F Cetera! Best thing to happen to this band. He never sang like this.
This song greatly inspired me when I first heard it years ago, it still does now, and it will for the rest of my life, as I work on inspiring the whole world to be happy, healthy and successful with my own inspirational pop songs. I have created the world's most inspirational website, which you can get to via my YouTube channel.
THIS 'Chicago' group, has risen This song to another level. This song is one of my Chicago Favorites now.
In fact, i've Got the 'Live' version of this song on my IPOD, along with the LIVE version of 'Hard habit to break' from this group. Go to 'ITUNES' and look up "Chicago Live"- For both of these songs. What you just heard via this video, sounds WAYY better on your Ipod... via the headphones.
@deliortega Dawayne Bailey. He was with them during the 90's. He is good but some of his solos often sound like they are meant for a different song...no resemblance to the song he is soloing in. His solo here is pretty good.
@bsharpinLondon Thanks bsharpinLondon, in fact it sounds more like a rock song solo than a ballad, but he´s really a master guitar player. Wish you a Merry Christmas.
Excellent vocal by jason..best version ive heard live...havent heard him sing that good since..but holy shit.. great outro vocal ad libs..his energy, wow..you can tell he was still fresh in the band..
A masterpiece of music, rich vocals, layers of sound and conviction in the voices. Jason did this more than justice! Never tire of the dynamics of Chicago!
One thing that makes this version much better than the 70's versions is Bill Champlin's harmony parts. This version (and the current version) of the band had superior harmony vocals obviously. I also agree that Jason did a much better job than Peter on this, but Jason's voice now isn't nearly this powerful, and he's not that old to be that weak vocally in my opinion. I base this on my seeing them just 2 nights ago live. Still a great band though regardless.
As great as Peter was, this is the superior version of the song. Jason sometimes struggles with Peter's ballads, mostly because the songs were written for Peter and not Jason. This one is a big exception, as Jason's version is vastly superior, almost as if it were written for him.
Most musicians can only dream of writing such a masterpiece and I'm one of them. This is nothing short of fantastic.Peter said there was no way he would reunite with Chicago so here's the result;someone who kicks ass replaced him and Chicago lives on after all it's the music first then the musician.
Peter Cetera is a fuckin lounge act these days he bit the hand that feeds and paid for it. Chicago still sells out anywhere they play I don't care where it's at. Tough luck cetera. RIP Terry Kath Hendrix even said himself that Terry was better than him and THATS SAYING SOMETHING
Peter Cetera is a "dick" he alway's thought he was better..Like i have said as a fan forever,,,,We miss Terry...we always will...Sorry,Peter,I thought you were an intelligent man..I surely have my doubts~~~~Thank god ,for Jason..;)
@slyzim absolutely agree with the exception that i used to love cetera. when he left the band he became an arrogant prick. jason kills with his effort here
I believe Scheff came in after Peter decided he could do better on his own in the early 90's......Love Chicago...Thank you all for going on without Peter..who needs him anyway, haha
Jason will never be Peter Cetera, when singing this song. This song holds a lot of meaning for me and when I saw Peter singing it, it made sense. All of Peter's songs should not be played in concert. Unless they can have a reunion. And when you put Peter and on the same stage with Jason, Peter wins out..I have seen both and Peter was and still the best part of Chicago. It is his voice they hear when when they play his songs...
@bjfish429 When you say "Peters songs" Uh Jimmy pankow wrote this,so it's not Peters at all.So Pankow has more of a right to say who he wants singing it than anyone.
And just to add,Jasons' version here is superb so don't go spouting crap.Peter left-His choice, his loss.
@bjfish429 Dude i agree..But where the hell has Peter been???He does not give a shit about the old songs of Chicago..Don't you get it??Yet???Peter is all about Peter and that is it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Sorry!!!
@bjfish429 I don't hear his voice because Cetera quit. Scheff does alright. He really kicks it up in this video. Cetera isn't coming back...ever! The only thing Cetera gives a shit about is himself. His collaboration with David Foster is what totally wrecked this band. I'm glad they found Scheff. I saw them recently and most of what they played was their 70's stuff. Thank God! What's Cetera doing these days? touring with schlocky renditions of If You Leave Me now? Nice Tux Pete!
Outstanding! Fabulous musicinaship. Chicago are the real deal. Taking nothing away from Terry Kath who even Hendrix admired, so I'm told, Dwayne Bailey rises to the ocaasion.
I've seen them 85 plus times and I do agree that this was one of the best version of this song! Just saw them tonight at a small country club in Orange County...only 3 of the original guys were present! No Jimmy tonight and this was my second show without Bill Champlin since he moved on to do his own thing.
Hate to say it, but THIS Chicago group took this song to another level. Sounds better than the Original. Great Performance by Jason, this song is Perfectly Fit for him.
It's oh so easy to comment on LIVE performances..yeah Robert started too fast, so what!? Try stand in their shoes (f.i. Jason's)...I bet no one comes out of it like Jason did and still does! This rocks!!!! I think this is the best version ever played by this band. They were all into it, Tris was kickin it that night, and the best thing about it is that the vocals were spot on. GREAT STUFF!!! wow.
Nice save as Lamm started this way too fast. The horns pulled it back. This was not a great time in Chicago's history. No hits; no-name guitarists; Kath gone; Serraphine booted. Amazing that they never packed it in.
I'm not sure how you can say that. Kath and Seraphine were important in Chicago's history sure, but Imboden is a pro drummer, and regardless of Dawayne's modern day presence (or lack there of) he's a magnificent guitarist who gave Chicago a whole new sound; granted in some cases that wasn't a good thing (25 or 6 to 4 - 1989). Personally I consider this concert to Chicago's high point of the '90s; all the band members are totally into the music, and performing flawlessly. Excellent show.
A fair response. All of your points are legit although I still stand by the point that Lamm started too fast.
I don't know how old you are, but I was old enough to listen to the early albums when Chicago first hit the scene. It's impossible to deny the level of influence Kath had on the band. For many of us, the "real" Chicago ended with his death.
Having said that, I do like the guitar solo in this performance
Agreed, Lamm did start a little too fast. The horn section is skilled enough to pull it back into the proper tempo not only together, but smooth enough to make it seem almost intentional.
I have to admit that I'm not old enough to have heard these albums when they were released, but I'm a university level music student and I have studied the older albums quite thoroughly. I Love this band.
Interesting about the university level music student. I am a university music grad who currently teaches high school music. This is good as we can talk on a higher level. When I was in university, I used to play in a cover band with 4 horns. We played a number of early Chicago tunes. It was my favourite part of the night. That's why when they brought on David Foster I knew it was going to be the end of the Chicago I once loved. All of those power ballads (without horns) from the 80's proved it
Lamm started "way too fast"?? Why bother with such a comment? Slightly too fast is more like it with a negligible effect on the performance of the tune. I guess Robert should go back to "high school" for lessons but he's too busy playing for crowds of thousands every night and dusting off his 40 gold and platinum records when not performing, writing or recording. Absurd.
Because he did start "way" too fast. I'll even use your logic to support my point. If he's that good, and has toys of that value, why make such a careless mistake? People paid a lot of money to have the horn section pull back such a sloppy error. The "high school" comment was an unneccesary personal attack. If you want to criticize at least try to use valid points. Thanks for your interest.
Agreed. The 80's ballads were totally not Chicago... at the time. I mean Walter Parazaider on electric guitar? What the hell was that?? The one thing that Chicago has done the best in the last decade or so is doing away with those terrible pop arrangements like 'You're the Inspiration' and 'Hard to say I'm Sorry' and by adding the integral horn parts have actually made them sound like Chicago.
Thanks for the support. I will give them credit in that having seen them live a couple of years ago, they have dropped most of the 80's stuff from their repertoire. Having not seen them live for over 25 years, it was a little disappointing that when I finally went back Pankow and Parazaider had subbed out. I understand there are health problems so I can't really hold it against them. They were quite the band in their day.
i think a lot people, including myself think that the horns in inspiration sound like shit...they really do. hard to say im sorry actually blended nicely though
One of the key elements to this era of Chicago was the vocal strength DaWayne brought to the musical mix. His powerful tenor is in full display here and one of the reasons this version sounds so good. The Chicago vocal sound dropped several notches with his departure along with his guitar virtuosity (best overall Chi guitarist since Kath). Howland's great but generic and Tris, while I have utmost respect for him as an industry pro, just never quite filled Danny's shoes stylistically.
Spot on. Dawayne's vocals brought an excellent blend back to Chicago's vocal harmony that hadn't been seen properly since Cetera's departure. Jason Scheff is a good tenor voice but he can't as skillfully blend into the harmony.
Indeed... in the live versions of I'm a Man he totally made the song during his verse. And "Stone of Sisyphus" would have been nothing without his voice on the chorus.
Holy Crap! This ROCKS! Dare I say that this song as played by this version of the band on this particular night is a lot tighter than the other live versions from the '70's. I might have to see if this DVD is available, anyone know?
I love scheffs voice,,,,He is such an incredible musician.I have had a few conversations with him and to my suorise he isnt vain at all as i felt he would be..:)
best version of this song EVER made... tris in his prime, scheff is totally into it, dawayne spot on solo... the progression throughout the song is amazing.
Scheff is a much better bassist than people give him credit for, and I want Dawayne back in this band!
I requested this song be put on here actually, just because i think it's the best example of the song ever made. Plus Chicago VII is missing from my collection.
I really love how this song develops from a ballad into nearly a hard rock sound almost completely unnoticed and subtly.
I think dismissing Dawayne Bailey was a poor choice on the bands part, but they probably have more reasons than have been made public. I still love Keith Howland's work though.
Agreed. This is a great version of this amazing song. Although Cetera is Cetera, I never heard a live version of this done as well by him. Backgrounds are smooth and tight behind Scheff and his improve at the end is killer.
Disagree though on the bassist remark. I think Jason gets lots of kudos for his status as a top flight bass player. Overall a better player than Cetera (although Peter was no slouch during his 19 years with Chicago).
upyanuts YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!... this was one of the best versions of ...searchin... chicago ever did it was from the mid 80"s tour with the new line up. i seen them do this tour in ohio and was blown away by the sound. i became a chicago fan for life that day. peace!
@upyanuts Beautiful~Thank you Jason, for helping Chicago band carry on...Some of the assholes tend to put you down ..too bad they have no music abilities ,their loss not ours..:)))
Scheff normally stinks it up pretty bad but he did a good job that night. It also helped that they kept Champlin away from the microphone for the most part.

Ill triple that. He claims to not have the greatest voice...but he's an awesome tenor.

Indeed... in the live versions of I'm a Man he totally made the song during his verse.

Yeshe's very down to earth. I've known his for over two years and we've stayed in contact since. He's a great guy and a very talented musician.

We saw them on 4/18 in CT and they were fabulous--the best group ever from all the groups we've seen that came from the 70's and on!!!!

this is one of the best concerts he has given CHICAGO, and in fact is my favorite. Chicago is the best there is in our time.

best version of this song EVER made... tris in his prime, scheff is totally into it, dawayne spot on solo... the progression throughout the song is amazing.
Scheff is a much better bassist than people give him credit for, and I want Dawayne back in this band!

Agreed.
Thanks James Pankow for this.

I think Peter's version from Pine Knob in '79 is very good. He sang it with some amazing confidence. It is a great version of the song as well.
