Thanks, HSG. I see now that you just have to wriggle yourself around however you can to get yourself going. Then it will come to you. I like the front to back move. Very graceful. Sometimes though it's sort of hard to see what's going on because of the cuffs. But the text helps a lot with this.
LOL, I usually inspect tarmac with my knee pads. Inspecting it with your backside takes considerable skill. Take the transitions slowly, shifting the weight from one foot, then centrally, then turn. You'll get there in no time at all.
I would like to say a big thank you to The Hot Stepping Granny for her excellent instructonal videos! I have recently starting skating after a 10 year break and these wonderful videos have really helped me to find my skating legs again. Going to try the side surfing today as I don't want to continue inspecting the tarmac with my backside. My transition from forward to back skating is a little less fluid and more like landing on my bum!
Plie (ballet exercises)help to train your muscles to get used to being in unnatural positions for extended periods of time. On a general side surf with bent knees your glutes, inner thighs and outer calves take most of your weight. For switch grapevines the outer part your foot, inner calves and thigh take most of your weight. Initially your feet won't go where you want them to, it takes a little time to train them. The rest is just practise. My spoken voice is pants on video.

It's from one of my favourite artistes, who also happens to be British. The track is called Sip 'n' Taste and his name is Omar.
