Apilado ( lean ) is not necessary. I think the dancing in Salon Style Close Embrace without lean and in Apilado with lean is different in many aspects. In particular, Salon style allows more freedom in expression while Apilado is more subtle. There are 4 styles: Canyengue, Orillero, Salon or Apilado. Each has its own intricacies and each style finds its devotees for whom it is easier.
