This performance is possible, when car companies finally quit trying to squeeze power out of the inefficient gasoline motor:

The Jaguar C-X75 has four electric motors at each wheel generating 195hp each. It can hit 62 mph in 3.4 seconds, with a 10.3-second dispatch of a quarter mile.

Using just batteries, you can drive 68 miles. The C-X75 can recharge with two micro gas turbines that provide a range of nearly 500 miles. The whole system has 780 hp and 1187 lb.-ft. of torque to all four wheels.

So those awesome high tech trains are really powered by fossil fuels, like the steam engines of 200 years ago. And those submarines you mentioned are powered by onboard nuclear reactors so unless youre suggesting we build cars with self contained nuclear power plants, it's not a very good example.

Durability? EVs have roughly a tenth of the parts of a gas car and the motor only has one moving part, while in the ICE you have hundreds. I think common sense says the EV is going to be a lot more durable.

The battery is where the weight factor comes in, so you have a point there. & batteries so far have limited cycle life, though it's improving rapidly & 10yr, 150k miles (min warranty in CA) shouldn't be an issue for the newer cells like in the Volt.
