for some reason i seem t obe unable to render as avi...i always get an error message sayin "an error occurred while opening a codec," unless i choose uncompressed :(
@MrHowTOPro no clue ! never bothered raping my harddrive (;
anyhow, i think that issue occurred because of a conflict with the LAME mp3 codec, so i work around it by rendering the audio uncompressed...might only save about 30 megabytes by compressing the audio of an apx 5 min video in SUPER, so it's a completely different league in file size...
@Stiffmeister1818 DivX is just a codec, shouldn't matter what program you use, as long as it's installed. It might be under a different name. Are you running a 64-bit program by chance?
@Stiffmeister1818 no, divx is not 64-bit compatible, but most people who run the 64-bit version of the program notice they can't find it. Try reinstalling vegas, or the codec, or both.
THANKS MATE! i been trying to render as HD but my cineform HD codec was on trial only, now i finally know, i been rendernig my vids as terribad quality for awhile!
hey, using vegas pro 9 here. is there no possible way to render it in HD but keep a small space. Cause a 4 min vid i made ended up exceeded 30 GB and... yeah.
@FrozenInadequateness good quality = big file size. That's how it works. Your file size is directly proportional to your bitrate, which is probably why your file was so big. Set your bitrate small, the resolution properly, use the proper codec, and set your framerate, you should be good to go.
@drazvannn don't tell me you are going to argue math with me kid... numbers don't lie. Perhaps you should actually know what you are talking about before you come here and start acting like a douche.
I think anyone here with any semblance of video editing knowledge, and even if you don't, that higher bitrate = higher file size for videos of the same length. You try to tell me otherwise, and you can head right on back to elementary school.
you forgot two major steps in both of your methods... you forgot to tell the viewers to change the audio settings to youtube format which is to change it to LAME MP3.. by doing this people can easily avoid youtube to add audio bugs in their HD videos.. youtube audio bugs usually break and crunch the audio file and distort the length of their audio. That is why it was crucial step and youtube preferable settings.
@sirajrizvi Actually, LAME is not required, as I've never had any problem with AAC or PCM audio, however, I did not know about the LAME encoder at the time I made this, which is why i left it out.
@aznlm Pro 8 vs pro 9 is negligible. The LAME mp3 encoder is just an audio codec, and the utilizing program should not matter. If you set your audio to mp3 audio, the encoder used should be the installed LAME encoder.

I'm having a Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 here. I installed the xvid codec. Yet, the codec does not get listed in the "Video format" combo, as it appears in your video. Do I have to do something additional to let Sony Vegas know that there is such a codec, or for some reason xvid/divx are not supported anymore since 9.0?
this was only IF people wanted to use this format. the irregular pixel shape may or may not be necessary, but it's not going to hurt anything. That's why we set the aspect ratio and the frame size as well.
For people wanting to render game footage as used as an example in this vid, do NOT do what he did @ 3:35.
The PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) for stuff captured from a computer is ALWAYS 1:1 (Square pixels). Only use the NTSC or PAL settings if you are using footage captured from a camera that shoots in NTSC or PAL and uses nonsquare pixels.
Also with game footage, ignore the usual NTSC or PAL framerates. Use a framerate that exactly divides into what you record at. (ie FRAPS @ 60FPS, render @ 30FPS)
If you captured using FRAPS at 60FPS and rendered @ 20FPS or 30FPS you wouldn't get any kind of ghosting or skipping as it divides in exactly.
However, if you did as you did and rendered game footage @ 29.97FPS then you are just causing needless problems unless you recorded it in 29.97FPS, aren't you?
You would be left with the choice of disabling resampling for each clip or living with the ghosting as it tries to create frames for moments in time that have no frame.
Most capturing devices will capture in the native standard of your particular region, in my case, NTSC. Fraps will have a default of 30fps, but you can also set it to record at something other than that, including 29.97. I've been doing it this way forever, and it always comes out fine.
They are all pretty good, but WMV probably has the slightly better quality (at the cost of being slower). Quality is relative though, since it depends on all your settings.
this is untrue. though, HD in it's true definition is widescreen. All you have to do is make the total size 1280x720, but you can 'insert' fake black borders on the sides to make it look 4:3. It's really stupid on most things to do that though.
Just wondering if anyone is able to give me a solution to my problem. I followed the divx instructions here and the avi file that came out the other end was good quality. THe problem though is that it has stretched to fill the whole screen. I am using a Sanyo HD1010 and it says it's 1280x720. Every other codec I have tried has not stretched it like this, so I am quite confused. They usually leave small black lines at each side which makes the picture appear as it is on the camera. Any ideas?
the codec is not the problem, its most likely the software you are using that is stretching the video.
1280x720 is 16:9 widescreen, and most of my captured product is actually in 16:10, which results in the black bars on the sides. I stretch them out using the software b/c it looks bad. Chances are, something like this is happening to you, there should be options to not stretch the video before you render.
first of all, great vid....secondly, i did similar settings but for a 8 minute video i got 350mb for my avi file (16:9, widescreen). Youtube only allows 100mb, so how can i compress that 350mb and keep my aspect ratio of 16:9. I tried compressing in windows movie maker but the outcome is 4:3 and my video is squashed. Is there any tool or software that can help me??? plz help!!
i'm having a little problem here. whenever i hit the "save" button so it starts rendering it goes for about a tenth of a second then says "an error occurred while while converting with a coded." i'm using the divx one.
really great video! can i ask you something? yeah! HD is good but can you make a video of how to HQ not HD but HQ widescreen videos for youtube?? plz...
and if you make it into an avi file it's like 200 mb and takes forever to upload on youtube is there a way to reduce the size even while making it an avi file
Hey man, when you record in 4:3, do you uncheck the maintain aspect ratio so that it becomes 16:9? it still shows up as HD on youtube, but its square...i cant decide whether to stretch it or leave it square, because it doesnt take up the whole screen when 4:3 HD
thanks. ok but why when i render it, it come out all choppy??? i did everything just as you did in the video. i used the divx set up. plz reply back a.s.a.p!
Did you have frame-loss? Have you tried using other codecs? If you render at a bitrate that is less than what was used to capture, or at a framerate less than that, you are only getting parts of the original source, so it may appear that way
you can get it for free theres loads ot video tutorials on youtube but it is illegal you need to download a torrent of it or download the trial then somthing that generates the actrivation code
Man, just wanted to drop by and say thanks. your tutorial worked like a charm for me. i was having problems rendering a video in Vegas Pro 8( too much FX at once was making the rendered video lag ) and this was the only one that worked. I don't know you, but i feel like you're my best friend right now XD
sry, nothing, it's just that i think you sound kinda like KevinSandusky.
A note on the video, now that you mention it.
I just got an Aiptek Action HD 1080p camcorder that records in MOV. When I added the MV files to Vegas, I noticed there was no sound. I researched it and found htat all you have to do, is change the filename to MP4 and the audio will show up.
Good to know... I have a device that captures HD from my consoles, and I noticed that when I run the recording extra long, the video track doesnt show up. It's an AVCHD file, which Vegas 8.0c should be able to read, but for some reason, the longer files dont have the video. I have to use the built-in converter for it, and it takes FOREVER to convert them. Not sure why that's happening...
Helo I have a problem, my source videos is Fraps (latest version) and I wish to render to XviD (latest version) however the resulting avi file only contain the audio file.
You would set your framerate to 25 (PAL) and if you cannot select 16:10, then you will either have to try manually setting it to your desired resolution, or just use 16:9, as it will scale accordingly anyways. You will most likely never notice it.
Mine is actually 16:10 too, but with this player, the settings are a smaller area.
Well I tried it, not the Framerate thing, but I also found out that you can't record 1024x720 resolutions + with fraps unless you have a 10k RPM HDD, and I don't. But that aside, I actually change my resolution to 1280x720 so I'll have to put 16:9 input and 16:9 output, right? Unless I'm recording something ELSE...
Seems confusing, but it's not once you really see...
FRAPS shouldn't require a 10k RPM HDD for those resolutions, since I dont have one and it works fine for me. I usually record at half size to save space.
What you will actually do is set your game to whatever resolution you want, and the aspect ratio will remain the same. That way, when you scale down, the image will not be distorted.
So yes, you just need to have the input AR = what the input is, and set the output to 16:9.
I dont buy that. not at all. It wont affect anything being recorded at 30FPS. Anything higher, maybe... but still...
No, it shouldnt look squashed as long as the aspect ratio is consistent. you might have to set the settings in the vid to NOT maintain aspect ratio. This is what causes the small black bars on the side, since 16:10 is not the same as 16:9.
Recording lossless is fast b/c its uncompressed. Its drawback however is the file size. I didnt read anywhere that your hard drive speed needed to be over 10K to record without lag (which is your CPU and GPU mostly), but if you were to use a different codec, like DivX, yes you would need a faster drive to record that much.
Hey I tried this and I tried installing the DivX Community Codec v6.8 and It doesn't have CONFIGURE there, and it doesn't say "2 Logical CPUs" DivX(R) 6.8.5 YV12 Decoder is all it shows.

Divx is always AVI, even a .divx is just an AVI renamed .divx.
The new MKV files used in H.264/divx 7 are different, but if you are using divx <= 6.8 then you ARE using AVI.

THank you very much..one more question...howlong can make the youtube convert the video when it plays in HD?:))
sunkafleky 2 years ago
Depends on the size... anywhere from a few minutes to hours/days.

thnaks a lot!

How large is the file size of a 6 minute video
ZAMTRON 2 years ago
How long did it take for you to render this video?
rinwhr 2 years ago
maybe 15-20 mins?
skorch82 2 years ago
what filesize do you get for a 10 minute video with your Xvid settings?
I got 18.9 MB for 33 seconds, which comes out to somewhere around 350 MB for 10 minutes...how long does it take to upload?
pbmaster123 2 years ago
That's about how big mine are.
Takes me about 30 mins to upload, depending on the bandwidth at the time. I have a pretty fast upload speed.
skorch82 2 years ago
i downloaded xvid codec
but when i render as in sony vegas the option doesnt pop up
whats wrong?
2433mike 2 years ago
shouldnt be much action required, other than the install. Did you restart Vegas?
skorch82 2 years ago
i'm having a little problem here. whenever i hit the "save" button so it starts rendering it goes for about a tenth of a second then says "an error occurred while while converting with a coded." i'm using the divx one.
dialga293 3 years ago
There are some settings that the codec doesn't like. This one really also depends on the quality of the source video.
I had better luck with xvid, i would recommend you try that.
skorch82 3 years ago
alright thanks. I'll give it a try.
dialga293 2 years ago
I have a question. I've been getting a lot of blocky artifacts. Could this be Youtube's fault? They look fine on my laptop BEFORE uploading.
Kibblre 3 years ago
do you have an example of this? I don't really know what that means.
skorch82 3 years ago
Yea, go check out my video "CoD4 - First Match In Months"
It looks perfectly clear when I play it in VLC Media Player.
Kibblre 3 years ago
Yeah i did i searched On Google DivX Download Then I Downloaded It For Windows Vista I Scanned My Computer It Found A Trojan
krackpog66 3 years ago
DivX has an official website... you probably didnt download it from there...
skorch82 3 years ago
I Downloaded divX It Said Somethin About DivX Updater It Ended Up Being A Trojan >.>
krackpog66 3 years ago
did you get it from the divx website? ...
skorch82 3 years ago
really great video! can i ask you something? yeah! HD is good but can you make a video of how to HQ not HD but HQ widescreen videos for youtube?? plz...
WTFhaveYouDoneLately 3 years ago
you really can't get widescreen and only have HQ.
You can try lowering the bitrate to less than 1.5Mbps and have the resolution at 1280x720, but in all honesty, it would look like crap.
you can try and stretch a 4:3 aspect ratio to fill the frame, but again, not worth the sacrifice.
the smallest 16:9 ratio for HD is 1280x720, and that will bypass HQ altogether.
skorch82 3 years ago
Actually, you can render with 640x360 i believe, which is widescreen, with a lower bitrate maybe around 1 mbps more or less for widescreen HQ
pbmaster123 2 years ago
That wont get you HD. The min frame height I believe needs to be 720
skorch82 2 years ago
no i mean for widescreen high quality
pbmaster123 2 years ago
WS HQ is something you dont really want. Only making it in HQ will make the vid harder to see and stretching it will make it look lame.
skorch82 2 years ago
SKORCH
my video frames lagg terrible and yet hte audio works fine
davidlaw50 3 years ago
try increasing the bitrate.
skorch82 3 years ago
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
and if you make it into an avi file it's like 200 mb and takes forever to upload on youtube is there a way to reduce the size even while making it an avi file
DoubleLoco 3 years ago
The size is dictated by your bitrate and framerate.
Lowering either of them will lower your size, but reduce the quality.
You will most likely have to scrap making it HD, or deal with larger files...
skorch82 3 years ago
where did you get your theme from?
kory1137 3 years ago
windowblinds
skorch82 3 years ago
Thanks :)
kory1137 3 years ago
Hey man, when you record in 4:3, do you uncheck the maintain aspect ratio so that it becomes 16:9? it still shows up as HD on youtube, but its square...i cant decide whether to stretch it or leave it square, because it doesnt take up the whole screen when 4:3 HD
pbmaster123 3 years ago
thanks. ok but why when i render it, it come out all choppy??? i did everything just as you did in the video. i used the divx set up. plz reply back a.s.a.p!
781KIDD 3 years ago
Did you have frame-loss? Have you tried using other codecs? If you render at a bitrate that is less than what was used to capture, or at a framerate less than that, you are only getting parts of the original source, so it may appear that way
skorch82 3 years ago
how much does this vegas 8 cost
invisibleinoue 3 years ago
Around $300
skorch82 3 years ago
i know i want 8, i got 7.0, its not to bad though
xk420kx 3 years ago
Its cheaper if you own one of the previous 2 versions (6 or 7), b/c you qualify for the upgrade price, which is like near half the cost.
skorch82 3 years ago
you can get it for free theres loads ot video tutorials on youtube but it is illegal you need to download a torrent of it or download the trial then somthing that generates the actrivation code
carminoweking 3 years ago
Man, just wanted to drop by and say thanks. your tutorial worked like a charm for me. i was having problems rendering a video in Vegas Pro 8( too much FX at once was making the rendered video lag ) and this was the only one that worked. I don't know you, but i feel like you're my best friend right now XD

Lol, good show man :)
Glad to hear it worked out.
I'll be your friend if you feel that it would keep the success comin' :P

I HAVE A QUESTION , in the end , what is better? WMV or AVI? for make HD videos for You Tube
LGanimationDotCom 3 years ago
The quality I have found may be a little better with WMV, but really, you can't really tell. I like AVI since it doesn't take as long to render.
skorch82 3 years ago
Did you mean Movie Studio 9? Vegas Pro is only version 8.
You can recreate the settings if they dont appear for you, but it might be different for those versions.
You can achieve the same settings by verifying the output format, the resolution, and the video/sound bitrates.
skorch82 3 years ago
Nice tutorial, thanks, i was confused with the bitrate in render, thanks a lot :DDD

when i use divx the video resolution is shaky and it has the divx watermark. what do i do? =S
KillBill869 3 years ago
The DivX watermark is not supposed to be permanent unless you used some advanced feature that might warrant you needing to pay for it.
As for the resolution being shaky... I dont know how the codec would cause that. Did you try another codec?
skorch82 3 years ago
well it also happened with xvid, but h264 never gave me problems
KillBill869 3 years ago
Have you seen Tropic Thunder?
I'm not an annoying 8 yr old just tryin to carry on a convo with you, I have a point, I just thought you might know what I'm talking about.
drumb3r42 3 years ago
Yeah, I've seen it, but what does it have to do with video editing?
skorch82 3 years ago
sry, nothing, it's just that i think you sound kinda like KevinSandusky.
A note on the video, now that you mention it.
I just got an Aiptek Action HD 1080p camcorder that records in MOV. When I added the MV files to Vegas, I noticed there was no sound. I researched it and found htat all you have to do, is change the filename to MP4 and the audio will show up.
T3chN3ck 3 years ago
oops different account, but that;s still me lol.
drumb3r42 3 years ago
Good to know... I have a device that captures HD from my consoles, and I noticed that when I run the recording extra long, the video track doesnt show up. It's an AVCHD file, which Vegas 8.0c should be able to read, but for some reason, the longer files dont have the video. I have to use the built-in converter for it, and it takes FOREVER to convert them. Not sure why that's happening...
skorch82 3 years ago
Helo I have a problem, my source videos is Fraps (latest version) and I wish to render to XviD (latest version) however the resulting avi file only contain the audio file.
Can anyone help?
ChudzUK 3 years ago
Few questions,
was this tutorial rendered with the divx or xvid codec?
and did you use the HDV template at the start of the project (done by clicking file, new, HDV 720-30p template...

My monitor is PAL (Europe) and It's 16:10 not 16:9, what should I do? :S
VaderGaming 3 years ago
You would set your framerate to 25 (PAL) and if you cannot select 16:10, then you will either have to try manually setting it to your desired resolution, or just use 16:9, as it will scale accordingly anyways. You will most likely never notice it.
Mine is actually 16:10 too, but with this player, the settings are a smaller area.
skorch82 3 years ago
Well I tried it, not the Framerate thing, but I also found out that you can't record 1024x720 resolutions + with fraps unless you have a 10k RPM HDD, and I don't. But that aside, I actually change my resolution to 1280x720 so I'll have to put 16:9 input and 16:9 output, right? Unless I'm recording something ELSE...
It's quite confusing
VaderGaming 3 years ago
Seems confusing, but it's not once you really see...
FRAPS shouldn't require a 10k RPM HDD for those resolutions, since I dont have one and it works fine for me. I usually record at half size to save space.
What you will actually do is set your game to whatever resolution you want, and the aspect ratio will remain the same. That way, when you scale down, the image will not be distorted.
So yes, you just need to have the input AR = what the input is, and set the output to 16:9.
skorch82 3 years ago
Ohhh, and it wont look SQUASHED like it usually does?
And yes not having a 10K RPM HDD does affect the FPS, so many people mistake it and end up buying quad laz0r beem c0rez and 16GB ramz0rz
VaderGaming 3 years ago
I dont buy that. not at all. It wont affect anything being recorded at 30FPS. Anything higher, maybe... but still...
No, it shouldnt look squashed as long as the aspect ratio is consistent. you might have to set the settings in the vid to NOT maintain aspect ratio. This is what causes the small black bars on the side, since 16:10 is not the same as 16:9.
The stretch is negligible.
skorch82 3 years ago
Fraps has to constantly record at LOSSLESS and save VERY VERY VERY LARGE filesizes on your PC, it's going to lag you. Google it... AFAIK anyway.
oh alright, I'll try it then get back to you
VaderGaming 3 years ago
Recording lossless is fast b/c its uncompressed. Its drawback however is the file size. I didnt read anywhere that your hard drive speed needed to be over 10K to record without lag (which is your CPU and GPU mostly), but if you were to use a different codec, like DivX, yes you would need a faster drive to record that much.
Oh well, I dont have any issue with it.
skorch82 3 years ago
Hey I tried this and I tried installing the DivX Community Codec v6.8 and It doesn't have CONFIGURE there, and it doesn't say "2 Logical CPUs" DivX(R) 6.8.5 YV12 Decoder is all it shows.
VaderGaming 3 years ago
d/w, just needed a restart.
Thanks for this ;).
It'll help a lot with my movies.
