Hi, I'm American. We're trying to work out the fact that if we all pitch in on something, it gets better, cheaper and more available. We need to fix this and most of us all want health care, but what some of the loud yahoos are afraid of is, is losing what they have...which they will anyway in a few years. Notice the ethnic back ground and affluency of the people who DON'T want healthcare reform.

I have never heard such ingnorance in all my life! America is 37th in world as far as health care. If for no other reason why would not want it to be like the counties that are in the top 5? France is in the top 5. They have universal care. Why would we not want that? I have great health insurance, but I just had to have surgery. I stayed in the hospital for 2 days and the cost was $13,000.00. I still have 2 pay $1500. That still hard for me to pay.
How long did you have to wait? I live in Ireland. I needed a Septoplasty to facilitate breathing. Public system wait would have been 10 months! Luckily I had private (but very expensive) insurance so I got the operation a month later at a hospital that was at least 20 years more advanced than the public. Private v. public NO COMPARISON. My insurance also allows me to get treatment in the US in the event of certain rare illnesses...funny how they wouldn't send me to France if it's so great...
No you don't. You don't have to wait 10 months for help in most European countries (I don't know about where you live). Here in the US you have to wait for surgery or a basic checkup while your insurance company decides where you get the checkup, what doctor you can see, when, etc.
Well it's the case in Italy, Britain and Ireland. They are the places I have experience of. Not 10 months for chronic illness generally, but for more routine operations such as Rhinoplasty etc. My gran waited 11 months for a double hip replacement under the NHS. And that's typical. That is the reality. You can't fuckin' deny it. I can't understand how Americans contradict Europeans about our own healthcare systems that we actually use regularly

However, being a US citizen, I can tell you emphatically that US Republican reports of us having the "best healthcare system in the world" are not true. 1/6 of our citizens have no insurance, 2/5 of our citizens have inadequate insurance, 18% of our citizens can't afford their medication and 45,000 people die per year due to lack of insurance. No European system has stats like that.
A few people fall through the cracks in Europe but in the US swaths of people fall through the cracks and millions are swept and shoved through the cracks by insurance companies.

All of their money comes from the money paid to them by customers who can't afford their own medical expenses, they don't produce anything that creates revenue.
If the insurance companies are just a middle man, then pay the hospital cash. Cut the insurance company out. Almost nobody could afford to pay a hospital directly for their healthcare. But we CAN (most of us) pay for insurance.

Insurance is needed by every industrialized nation has solved the problem by just having a single insurer (a public system paid for by the public) instead of a complicated system of hundreds to thousands of competing private bureaucracies that operate in such a way to maximize their profit (which translates to charging as much as possible for as little service as possible).
The thing is that governments don't make a profit from insurance. They are allocated a certain amount of money from taxes for a certain program and are given budget constraints to operate in for that program.
A private company makes money by getting as much revenue as possible. How do you get a lot of revenue when it comes to something like human health? Make sure people stay sick.

Governments just stretch money as far as possible by doing as little for their "customers" as possible. This is why the DMV sucks ass. For the past 30 years the budget for social programs have been cut and the budget for military spending, corporate welfare, agribusiness subsidies and crap like that has been expanded. Cutting defense spending by 50% and corporate welfare by 70% would free up $6-7 Trillion alone. Enough to ensure every man, woman and child in the US several times over.

We need a two-sided tort reform. Put caps on court claims so doctors can lower liability insurance costs. Then give consumers a special medical bankruptcy class so their primary family residence is protected in the case of catastrophic illness. That way citizens can keep their homes.
Health cost is too big an issue to be handled in a single bill and as much as possible we should try to keep big government programs out of the solutions. Reform regulations instead.

I have never heard such ingnorance in all my life! America is 37th in world as far as health care. If for no other reason why would not want it to be like the counties that are in the top 5? France is in the top 5. They have universal care. Why would we not want that? I have great health insurance, but I just had to have surgery. I stayed in the hospital for 2 days and the cost was $13,000.00. I still have 2 pay $1500. That still hard for me to pay.

How long did you have to wait? I live in Ireland. I needed a Septoplasty to facilitate breathing. Public system wait would have been 10 months! Luckily I had private (but very expensive) insurance so I got the operation a month later at a hospital that was at least 20 years more advanced than the public. Private v. public NO COMPARISON. My insurance also allows me to get treatment in the US in the event of certain rare illnesses...funny how they wouldn't send me to France if it's so great...

No you don't. You don't have to wait 10 months for help in most European countries (I don't know about where you live). Here in the US you have to wait for surgery or a basic checkup while your insurance company decides where you get the checkup, what doctor you can see, when, etc.

Well it's the case in Italy, Britain and Ireland. They are the places I have experience of. Not 10 months for chronic illness generally, but for more routine operations such as Rhinoplasty etc. My gran waited 11 months for a double hip replacement under the NHS. And that's typical. That is the reality. You can't fuckin' deny it. I can't understand how Americans contradict Europeans about our own healthcare systems that we actually use regularly

I challenge you to read a British paper. They contain litanies of complaints about hospitals. Indian-style overcrowding is common and the QUALY system is inhumane. However, Europeans hate Capitalism so they always say they prefer their system to the American one

However, being a US citizen, I can tell you emphatically that US Republican reports of us having the "best healthcare system in the world" are not true. 1/6 of our citizens have no insurance, 2/5 of our citizens have inadequate insurance, 18% of our citizens can't afford their medication and 45,000 people die per year due to lack of insurance. No European system has stats like that.

The insurance company is nothing but an industry that makes money taking 1 out of every 3 dollars of the interaction between patients and hospitals in exchange for protection "insurance". They're nothing but a middleman, a private bureaucracy. Any racket could do their job. All of their money comes from the money paid to them by customers who can't afford their own medical expenses, they don't produce anything that creates revenue.

Most people, as in any nation, don't have enough money to pay $1000-15,000 a visit several times a year.
Insurance is needed by every industrialized nation has solved the problem by just having a single insurer (a public system paid for by the public) instead of a complicated system of hundreds to thousands of competing private bureaucracies that operate in such a way to maximize their profit (which translates to charging as much as possible for as little service as possible).

The thing is that governments don't make a profit from insurance. They are allocated a certain amount of money from taxes for a certain program and are given budget constraints to operate in for that program.
A private company makes money by getting as much revenue as possible. How do you get a lot of revenue when it comes to something like human health? Make sure people stay sick.
The market works for some things but not for others. Any honest economist will tell you that.

They usually due that because of budget cuts. For the past 30 years the budget for social programs have been cut and the budget for military spending, corporate welfare, agribusiness subsidies and crap like that has been expanded. Cutting defense spending by 50% and corporate welfare by 70% would free up $6-7 Trillion alone. Enough to ensure every man, woman and child in the US several times over.

That's not solving the problem, the current system is going to bankrupt Americans in general because our current system is too expensive and too inefficient. Americans pay 2 to 3 times what anyone in the industrialized world pays for healthcare and by 2017 the average American will pay premiums of $30,000/year for a family of 4. 45,000 Americans will die per year from lack of insurance and by 2017 1/4 of Americans will be uninsured and it will cost 20% of GDP to keep that pile of shit running.

Mail is not nationalized in the US and there are private mail companies like FedEx and UPS. Medical insurance is nationalized in Europe (and every other industrialized nation such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Canada, etc.) and thus not for sale.

And FYI I have a job. I'm an economist. Still don't have insurance because I have a "preexisting condition" which means I can never apply for an insurance plan. I have to pay for my medical expenses out of pocket, so the only choice for me is Medicare or a public option.
Scoff while you can because those who do have insurance will be paying $32,000+/year premiums for a family of 4 by the year 2018 (that means you too). So keep supporting the status quo and see where it gets you.

In all the other first world nations around the world people are just directly insured by a national program (similar to if Medicare covered everyone) instead of having insurance rackets that offer to SOMETIMES pay for medical expenses in return for high premiums and high interest rates that are sometimes lower than the rates that loan sharks charge (I'm completely serious).
And many sick people in the US with no insurance go to Canada, India or Japan for help.

A huge powerful insurance industry that refuses to pay for certain medical care and then doesnt offer a clear explanation. It does pay for unhelpful care that ends up raising premiums.
Its customer service can be hard to reach or unhelpful.
And the people who are covered by this insurer have no choice but to remain with it —
or, at best, to choose from ONLY ONE OR TWO other insurers that are JUST AS BAD.

We need a two-sided tort reform. Put caps on court claims so doctors can lower liability insurance costs. Then give consumers a special medical bankruptcy class so their primary family residence is protected in the case of catastrophic illness. That way citizens can keep their homes.
Health cost is too big an issue to be handled in a single bill and as much as possible we should try to keep big government programs out of the solutions. Reform regulations instead.
