cd~ switches to your home directory. You don't have to create a variable $home and use that.

That's right I prefer using eclipse plug in for adobe products, they are free like lazlo. Besides flash is faster and have better graphics.

There are Eclipse plugins for this I believe.

Unfortunate for me, I had to use the command line. I placed the laszlo files in my home directory under utilities.

so the command was essentially: /home/allen/lps/bin/lzc yourfile.lzx

If everything is ok, you openlaszlo will generate the swf -- otherwise heed the warnings and check your code.
