I got my dad back into modeling last year (reversed father/son dynamic). I gave him my old airbrush and snagged him a bunch of 1/32 kits cheap. After slogging through the Revell Stuka he actually working on this 109! So, I'm sending him here to learn and grow.
This tutorial helped me a great deal. With the pre-shading I learned here, I entered my first contest last Spring and won gold. Crazy!
grey paint on grey plastic on a grey spray booth background. i'm sure there is a lot to be learned here, but I can't actually see much of what he's discussing. The basic pre-sharing concept i understand, but i dont understand the 'fill in' so much.
It`s all good and stuff, but i think this guy takes too little care in performing his airbrushing. NEVER start a stroke on your model. Start the "run"away from your model surface, to eliminate "spit marks" I also have the Aztek airbrush piece.
All in all a very good presentation for the dummies. Aztek is not nr.one airbrush .
Could you tell me what sort of compressor you use. I'm thinking about getting an Aztek double action air brush like ours and just wanted to know what you use. Thanks.
This is a good technique especially in wheel wells and wing folds. Yet for me it was a little too over powering when I tried it on the outer model surface! Personally, I'd rather use pastel chalk here because I can control the effect better....just my opinion.
That's actually known as priming when you color in the details and then go for a broad overspraying. That way, you won't obiliterate your preshading by just wack it on the model with a heavy paint coat. You want your preshading to show through.

The whole preshading thing using an airbrush is a waste of time. 40 years ago watercolors used AFTER everything else was done did the trick nicely. Some modellers just have to compete with each other to see who can come up with the most complicated method of doing the simplest tasks. Like using oil color washes to imitate RUST on aircraft. Aircraft are Aluminum! They do NOT rust. Back then, the IPMS told us that weathering was a way of hiding our mistakes. Airplanes should be NEW looking.
Get over yourself. You have been a complete jackass in every single comment you've posted in this man's videos. If you don't agree, or have a better suggestion, fine, state your piece, but don't act like a grumpy little child because you don't have your own videos.
Second, who has talked about creating RUST on an aircraft? Be coherent for once. Preshading and most all aircraft weathering has NOTHING to do with rust, and no one has claimed it does.
You have a very strange airbrush technique??? I am amazed that you get such good results the way you hold it. I do enjoy your tutorials though.Cheers!
What in gods name is that terrible looking AB?...and how you achieve that level of fine brushing with that wierd grip is beyond me...and it is fine work btw...bravo
Thats the Testors Aztek airbrush. It comes with interchangeable nozzles which is how he can get the very fine lines. I have one and love it! Don't understand that grip tho... :-)
Where do you get these fine tips?My current, first, and only airbrush isn't that accurate...(If I sprayed that wing, I would get not only a panel but the whole wing)

I have never seen anyone use an airbrush like that before. Nice vid!
armormaster 2 years ago
would it be different if u dont use preshading, instead you do the shading on panel lines after washing?
cenul2010 3 years ago
Everything OK. But I find that his way of using the airbrush is inconvenient and impractical and accurate
pntprp 3 years ago
Use the airbrush however you like, the purpose of this video is the preshading process, not the way he holds his airbrush.

He is obviously a pre-jet era fanatic. Would like to see him do a F-16 or and F-14 Tomcat for a change.

This may be a stupid question but can you use a air bursh with canned air to acheive close to the same effect?
stryan1868 3 years ago
depending on the airbrush yes but buying a compressor will save you money in the long run
