What about "drag hunting"? I believe this is what is done mostly in the US (dunno why or what the origins are - somehow don't think its a lack of foxes). In a drag hunt a scented rag is dragged across a field to a specific destination. This provides for all that is good about the "hunt" and no animals are ripped to shreds. For those who would try and equate meat eating with fox hunting, well, a slaughterhouse generally dispatches the animal quickly and hunting with bow or gun is usually fast

Take one fox. Skin it and gut it.
Hang the fox in running water for three days.
Cook with garlic, onion and tomato, as if you were cooking rabbit the Italian way: lay in a dish, cover, and stew for about an hour and a half.
I would probably cut the fox into halves, not quarters.
Serve with chestnut pasta, and for wine: a good Falerian.
It's not generally known that the Thais eat a lot of fox. It's the closest thing that Chinese, Thais and Malays can legally get to dog.

Oregano salt & paper to taste 500mlt of red wine (Chianti or Pinot Griego) bring to boil & simmer for 90mins. Serve with polenta made the night before then fried just before serving!

I would be more concerned at the government ban due to it's political grounding.

aww look at that another silly uneducated comment. hares do not do well on modern farmland for numerous reasons, but estates where coursing was held, made an effort to create ideal habitat for hares, these were the places that hare population was high, also through the year the weakest hares are picked off leaving the very best to breed. now that these estates cannot course, they shoot, instead of a few weak hares being picked off every weak, around 300 -500 hares will be shot in one day!

the chase cannot last for hours. the hunt can, and it can be after one fox, but the fox will not know it is being hunted for a long time, the hounds are scent hounds and hunt a trail for a long time before actually getting close to a fox.
