Note how Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland and Shanghai Disney are missing? Its because these parks werent even built yet. WDW is not shown, but featured by the Epcot Center and represented by the large Mickey Mouse satellite in space, as WDW is the "center" of all things Disney, contrary to belief Disneyland is home.
@rwalford1979 They probably wouldn't have used those parks in a montage for American TV anyway, even if they were built back then. Tokyo DL is only there because it was the first international park.
Not sure how you get that the Mickey Mouse satellite represents WDW. It's a actually taken from a 1983 campaign to advertise the Disney Channel.
Kind of sad that people interpret WDW as the center of all things Disney. It's a poor spokesman compared to Disneyland.
@80sCommercialVault Perhaps because WDW has more parks, more Disney content, and is essentially the test market and studio ground for Disney Channel production, movies, rides, concepts, things like that. Because it is larger and has more content, its easy to think of it as being the center. Personally, I prefer the original park but thats it.
@rwalford1979 The DL Resort and the whole of WDW have about the same number of attractions, despite the fact that WDW has more parks and many more times the land.
@80sCommercialVault And the satellite may represent Disney Channel or WDW depending how you look at it, since the studios and content all came out of Orlando.
THIS IS JUST A COMMENT TO BE OUT HERE BECAUSE IT'S URGENT!
Have anybody realize that Disney aren't using their own loving characters?
like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy, Goofy or Pluto? Sure, TV still play the old episodes of Popeye, The Pink Panther, Tom and Jerry, etc. but instead of Shake it Up, A.N.T farm, Good Luck Charlie and all those who-gives-a-ding-dong 'bout that useless stuff, Disney Channel should put up the good cute Mickey Mouse & his friends cartoons, right?
AAHHHHH!! That was so awesome! I wish I could relive my childhood! Best of times! I saw a clip of Flight of the Navigator.....I haven't seen that in 20 years or more. I gotta find it! Thanks for the great memories! =)
Cindy Williams (from Laverne & Shirley) is in one of the clips in this Disney intro. Does anyone recall the name of the movie she appeared in and what it was about? I know she was in "Save the Dog!" in 1988, but this would pre-date that. Thanks!
@bostonkid1979 If you actually take the time to read the video description, all the movies that are featured in this intro are listed. The movie shown here is "Help Wanted: Kids".
@bostonkid1979 - I'm trying to remember a movie I saw on Disney when I was lil. There's a scene with the two kids and the robot in a sewer, they have his white hemispherical head sat on an oil drum and he shows them schematic stuff in his glowie "brain." And in another scene, the kids are trying to make their gettaway and they ask it "Can you drive?" and the robot says "No, but I can learn!" and he reads the manual for the jeep. I'm pretty sure it's -not- And You Thought Your Parents Were Weird.
@bostonkid1979 The movie is called Help Wanted: Kids. It's about a yuppie New York couple that lose their jobs at an ad agency. The husband is able to find work at a children's clothing company in Arizona. The boss hires the husband assuming he has children, as the company is very family friendly. The yuppie couple hires two orphaned kids to help portray their happy family. I loooooved that movie when I was a kid. I have only been able to find it in PAL format. Can't watch it. :(
It's funny how all the 80's stuff from US was popular in the 90's in Eastern Europe. 25 yrs old Pole or Russian knows the same stuff 35 yrs old american loved.
That "noise" you hear in the beginning, reminds me of the sony playstation 1 welcome intro noice after you insert the cd and press "power" and before the game title start.
I really miss old Disney. When I watch videos of old Disney I feel like crying :( If you want old Disney back watch "Help the old shows" video in YouTube and listen and sign the petion. Please go there we need about 1000000 signs.
This was back when Michael Eisner had "the magic touch" (no pun on Magic Kingdom). I thought it was a modern and a tribute to Uncle Walt's vision. Then, Eisner got "political" and brought politics into Disney. Keep politics and coruption in D.C., leave it out of Disney.
anyone remember a movie that had a city in a spaceship but the spaceships' A.I. wanted to see Earth, so it set a crash course for Earth all on it's own? I hope someone remembers this and the title.
Seeing this brings back many memories from my childhood of my family sitting infront of the tv on Sunday nights watching the Disney Sunday night movie. thanks for posting!!
I have always loved the part with the cameraman letting viewers peer into the movie camera...
I desperatly love and miss the 80's!
If I recall there was a disney sunday movie every sunday night on channel 3,5,or 9..a time for kids and parents to settle in and watch a wholesome movie that was non-objectional.
It was from like 7-8:30, or 7-9,,and then it was bed time for school for us kids!
I would love to see those old movies again! I can't remember all the titles to them. When I was a kid Disney movies were awesome and wholesome...nowadays... my daughter loves the older shows. "The talking cat" is our favorite to watch :)
The reasoning behind it is that with the strong presence of the movie networks like HBO, people prefer watching movies with no commercial breaks and unedited. The need for a "Movie of the Week" is now obsolete. Back in the day, a theatrical movie on TV was a big deal. Also, with the Disney Channel around, there's no need for a network TV showing of a Disney show like this. Times have indeed changed.
The current Disney Channel rarely shows anything remotely "Disney".
The real reason why things like the Disney Sunday Movie don't exist anymore is that cable channels like Disney and Nickelodeon took away a huge slice of the demographic pie, and the networks decided that programming aimed at children just wasn't profitable enough anymore. The result? No more family friendly cartoons on primetime (Except for the stalwart holiday specials) and no Saturday Morning Cartoons.
@80sCommercialVault Agree completely except for the blame of the demise of Saturday Morning cartoons. That moreso is on the federal government's hands (trying to force stuff fitting their definition of educational programming, which I can't figure out why that would even be necessary on Saturday).
@80sCommercialVault Well, theatrical movies of any variety are rare on broadcast TV nowadays. Occasionally they will air on FOX, or ABC on Sat. nights (yes sometimes they are Disney films, e.g. Pirates of the Caribbean). Ahhh the 80's though, knowing and anticipating when a movie was about to come on broadcast TV and putting aside everything to give it your undivided attention. Sheer joy. As for the demise of Saturday morning cartoons, well that's just a travesty, a travesty I tell ya!
@darkpitch1 I was wondering.....what is your take on the "made for TV films" that have never been released to DVD that played during the "Disney Sunday Movie Spots"? Some examples I remember include: "Double Switch," "Fuzzbucket," "Hero in my Family," and many others...thoughts? I really wish Disney would release these under some sort of '80s classics collection.
I od not know why that Disney Will not bring this back to ABC> Disney Own ABC, I wish they bring it back. and they need to Bring back Mickey Mouse Club.... (New Show)
Disney should start a new channel called Disney Classic like Boom shows classic cartoons they can show Disney sunday movies kids incorporated and the mickey mouse club with britney and justin
wait a sec. I remeber this from the EARLY 90s. I mean i dont doubt you for a second that this was from the 80s, but i remeber seeing this sometimes around '90 or '91.
Once NBC took over in the fall of 1988 Disney's Sunday show was titled "The Magical World Of Disney". The theme music in that intro is identical, and several shots are used from this version, but I don't think this specific version aired again once Disney moved from ABC.
Are these still on? I know they tried to bring it back in the 90s n then it got cancelled then while channel surfing in 2004 I saw that it was back...but havnt really seen it since
They still occasionally play animated Disney films on ABC on Sunday Nights. I think ABC actually plays more classic Disney animation than the Disney Channel these days.
Though admittedly, Disney Channel has been doing somewhat better at least as far as playing some of the Renaissance stuff...no, wait; the only film from that period tend to air is Aladdin.
Man, those were the days of TV as a kid... before my family got cable, before our VCR... heck most of the 80's we watched TV in b&w. I always looked forward to this show, saturday morning cartoons, "Star Trek" and "Live on Tape." I only got to watch parts of Saturday Night Live cause I was still a youngster ;)
Long time Disney fan here; been to WDW 10 times and should go back in October. But it really is true that Vintage Disney (1980's and earlier) is way better. The Disney Channel today looks like Nickelodeon. The magic is completely gone there. Completely, and I do miss it. Thank Heavens for YouTube!
WDW is fun, but make sure you take a trip to Disneyland at some point. It may be smaller, but it's the original park with all the personal touches from Walt Disney. WDW felt pretty soulless in comparison when I went there (Though they still have the Swiss Family Treehouse and Carousel of Progress, so it's worth something).
I can't believe how far Disney has sank! I realize every generation has what they think is popular but i mean can ANYONE really argue that stuff like High School Musical and Hanna Montana is more amazing and family oreinted than Flight of the Navigator, and classic Disney like Fantasia, and Sleeping Beauty!!!! Kids might like it because it's modern...but OMG are they missing out!
The cynics that wander in here claiming that us nostalgia freaks are wearing rose-colored glasses and just don't understand the genius of "High School Musical" are either blind or don't have the brains to do a little critical thinking. The old stuff was better. The company started going downhill in the mid-90's, along with pop culture in general.
A lot of people don't realize that the main reason Disney HAS sank was due to the death of one of their main creative overseers.
Frank Wells and Jeff Katzenberg came on board with Michael Eisner in 1984 and the three of them spearheaded creative efforts for years - they are the ones responsible for the amazing things we got out of Disney from the late 80s/early 90s.
Unfortunately, Wells died in a helicopter crash in 94 (just before the release of The Lion King), and Katzenberg got pissed when Eisner didn't promote him to fill Wells' position, and ended up leaving the company to start DreamWorks. Eisner essentially got drunk with power over the next few years and ended up being ousted by the board in 2005.
The end result is what we have today - a company that has ceased to be a creative force, and is content to exploit one popular trend after another.
The death of Frank Wells was definitely a blow to the Walt Disney company, specifically to the the Theme Park division. He will be missed.
You can keep Eisner and Katzenberg though. Eisner transformed a perfectly good parking lot at Disneyland into an empty amusement park, and axed the traditional animation department at Disney. Katzenberg is responsible for all of those Dreamworks CG disasters that give me nightmares.
Eisner & Katzenberg defined the term "corporate meddling".
Well, I think Eisner and Katzenberg were both instrumental in creating the Disney of the late 80s/early 90s we grew to love, however Eisner let his position go to his head, and Katzenberg essentially bailed on the company, went off an tried to do his own thing, and failed miserably.
The three of them together is what made them succeed. It was a delicate balance, and after one piece was removed, the house basically collapsed.
that was back when disney had magic and wonderment but they sold out for a cheep buck with high school musical, and cheeta girls and pixar making all there movies
Thank you 80sCV! I finally found this! This was like a TGIF(ABC shows on Firday nights), but on Sundays, (Walt Disney style!), on NBC. This is where I first watched the movie, "Flight of the Navigator." One of the best movies when I was a kid! Thanks again!!!!!
2. ??? Looks like Kurt Russel in his "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes" - "Now You See Him Now You Don't" - "The Barefoot Executive" period where he was a 70s era Tommy Kirk.
I can't place the particular movie.
Well before his "Escape from New York" - "Big Trouble in Little China" phase.
But...
He returned to Disney to be 'The Commander' in "Sky High".
This aired on ABC for "The Disney Sunday Movie". The Disney Channel promos featuring the satellite are different, but were likely produced by the same people.
I´m often surprised what one can find on YouTube:-D This intro brings me old memories - here in the Czech Republic it was used too...Love it!!! Fakt hodně dobrý:-))
Disney made a ton of variants of this intro to fit with their current TV movies. Check out my Brat Patrol Promo/Disney Sunday Movie Intro video for that version.
Wow! That's amazing! This music was later used for "The Magical World of Disney". And I remember that Mickey Mouse sattelite on the 1983 bumpers, daily intro bumper, and closedown bumper.
I can almost imagine it: "The Magical World of Disney" with this music, but replacing the traditional clips of live-action movies with the various animated Disney (including some from The Chipmunk Adventure, if Alvin and the Chipmunks really were a part of Disney) and ending it with Roger Rabbit trying to keep the door open in the end with the captions showing the name of the movie showing that night
The Journey of Natty Gann was one of my favorite movies! Bottom line, Disney put out some great movies back then!

wow they lost the theme music at 0:27, how awful. I know it was the 80's but come on, the theme is meant to at least resemble an orchestral piece.

Fun to see this on YT and see all the comments. I worked on this opening spot back
in 1985-86 - lots of very hard work! Tricky doing the whole scene at the end zooming
into the camera lens. Live action was shot in reverse with the recording camera
starting as close to the lens as possible then pulling away. Then it was printed in reverse
to make it look like you were zooming in. Technology was not as advanced back then making things like this even more of a challenge!

I agree! High School Musical and such are ok but kids need to know what being a disney kid is, which is to watch the classics!

Back when Disney was good. The good movies ended in 2000.

The Disney Sunday Movie Theme is When You Wish Upon A Star.

But...
He returned to Disney to be 'The Commander' in "Sky High".
jsl151850b 3 years ago
I'm pretty sure that isn't Kurt Russell.
It looks like it's from the 80's. I'm guessing it's from some forgotten TV movie, as that's what most of these clips are from.

Mike Jittlov: The Wizard of Speed and Time ...
did the satellite design and animation.
In some versions you see it manned by green robed wizards.
(Was this for when The Disney Channel was new?)
jsl151850b 3 years ago
This aired on ABC for "The Disney Sunday Movie". The Disney Channel promos featuring the satellite are different, but were likely produced by the same people.

I didn't realize that about Jittlov. I'm glad he got "discovered" so to speak. He was an inspiration to me.

That Mickey satalite was also used as Disney Channel's first bumpers.

Ah the good old memories. It is a shame that the CD-quality version of the theme isn't available.

Hey, wasn't there a dancing mummy somewhere in this originally? I think it was near the beginning of the uptempo part.
rickyfan3956 3 years ago
Disney made a ton of variants of this intro to fit with their current TV movies. Check out my Brat Patrol Promo/Disney Sunday Movie Intro video for that version.

very high tech for 20 years ago. they should use that now in the 2000s.

That Spaceship Earth animation rocks. It looks like it turns from a globe into a microphone.

Wow! That's amazing! This music was later used for "The Magical World of Disney". And I remember that Mickey Mouse sattelite on the 1983 bumpers, daily intro bumper, and closedown bumper.
xLDEJRuffx 3 years ago 2
I can almost imagine it: "The Magical World of Disney" with this music, but replacing the traditional clips of live-action movies with the various animated Disney (including some from The Chipmunk Adventure, if Alvin and the Chipmunks really were a part of Disney) and ending it with Roger Rabbit trying to keep the door open in the end with the captions showing the name of the movie showing that night

YEAH! I love this 80's Disney intro! Man! I wish that they would still advertise it on TV today.
