  • I remember watching this live when I was a kid, remembering thinking to myself something seemed off with Tyson the second he stepped into the ring. Tyson was never been the same since.

  • This is how Ali would have boxed Tyson.

  • @Fischerintellect and this isnt how tyson would fight.

  • Its funny how much the motivation of loss can help a person. They should do a study on that lol. Seriously i reckon 9 times out of 10 a person can perform above and beyond their limits through using the pain of loss...need to be able to harness that power.

  • why are people acting like mike tysons a god? "a man standing up to him" if you are boxing, you are fighting every opponent no matter who it is, if youre boxing and you are scared of some people, than get the fuck out

  • Comment removed

  • Once mike tyson let kevin rooney go, it all went downhill........Tyson had no respect for his trainer for this fight

  • i watched this fight few time, i noticed that tyson tried to hit him with big shot thats y lost i think and also he doesnt seem to be tyson, i were filled up wi tears when he lost this fight, tyson is mine favorite boxer!!!!!

  • hey! don't do that! Hey! let's box guys! ....hey! none of that, don't do that! ...hey! let's fight now...break...no punches! hey! wait...wait get back let go! Hey hey hey hey! LOL

  • douglas moms died 3 days ago that why he was able 2 win if she was alive he would have gotten knock tha fuck out

  • @Rockaway55

thats wrong, tyson lost this fight because he fired his long time trainer and got lazy with training

douglas won because he trained harder then he ever had in his life

you dont just win a fight because your mom died, it may help but it didnt win you a fight

  • @toby099 he didnt fire anyone his trainer cuz dmato died. ya mike got lazy , he looks in just as good a of shape as ever. lol you guys love making excuses for mike the paper champ tyson

  • @thegreenbastard42011 Kevin Rooney was fired from the training staff and replaced with amateurs. LOL You Mike Tyson haters are just as delusional as the dickriders, you want Mike to look bad so much that you end up screwing yourself over when you speak, Mike didnt fire anyone?? Yea, and you obviously havent done your homework.

  • @BiggieSmalls11111 lol cus dmato was the reason he became a boxer once cuz died, mikes career was a wash. he fought no bodies, he went up against one guy who is known in the boxing community, and lost buster douglas. what homework you moron this shit happened 20 years ago. lol i like how you put one point about him firing a nobody replaced by nobodies then go on to have only insults,, i think you are the one the knows shit all about boxing.

  • @thegreenbastard42011 LOL Nice raging pal. Moron? What's moronic about my comment? You saying he didn't fire anyone shows how much you know about the subject which happened "20 years ago" LOL

  • @BiggieSmalls11111 ya raging like putting lol in all caps for what reason? lol you saying i dont know and then not giving anythin factual in return doesnt prove much else then your age. its ok youngin your loser father is wrong, tyson had hand picked fights until he lets success go to his head, he became a drug addict and lost all motivation , and that had nothing to do with the firing of his nobody crew. sorry kid it take a few sentences to full articulate my point. i know, i used big words.

  • @thegreenbastard42011 LOL Is that all you could point out "lol" in capitols and insinuate that you're smarter than someone else cause you use big words and then say something about my age? LOL RAGE. Its isnt typing in all captiols genius its the hatred in your comment, lol sitting at your computer pissed....Oh and Cus and Rooney not being there definitely made a difference, its called discipline which Cus and Rooney also trained Tyson to be. But your too big of a hater to see that.

  • @BiggieSmalls11111 lol whittled down to a nothing comment. wow dude im not even gunna bother with more info.

  • @thegreenbastard42011 Then be gone fly.

  • @thegreenbastard42011 LOL Even reading your comments months later, its still hilarious to see how big of a hater you are.....LOL Usually my opinions change, but no your arguement was STILL dumb as fuck....loser.

  • @BiggieSmalls11111 lmao you re read the comments, you pathetic faggot.

  • @thegreenbastard42011 LOL yea i re read it retard i happen to come back to this video and see your dumbass comments and re read it, STILL a dumbass!!!!! Fuck loser

  • buster is exposing the shortness of Mr Tyson and using his reach.. makes it look simple isnt it...lol

  • Mike Tyson disliked this

  • Tyson said this is his most memorable sporting moment bcos he's proud that he took such a brutal beating.. what a dick he broke my heart as a kid when he lost this fight lol

  • @28rampage This is his most memorable moment because this is when he became a bum.

  • @adrenacrumb no not a bum, this is when he became human

  • Colonel Bob Sheridan is such a good sportscaster. He is honest, he actually commentates the action instead of making pseudo intellectual points every so often, and he notices things early in fights which prove to be decisive later on. He gives both fighters adequate praise, and adds to the excitement level.

  • @specialfx34 Spot on. Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • You guys need to understand something

    this was tysons downfall.

He had personal problems in his life at this time which had a psychological effect on him, which also resulted in him not training hard too. The same went for the two fights before this against Carl Williams and Frank Bruno even though he won, he didn't show the skill he would normally do. Before that was his prime, which was when he was a beast.

  • @TheGlowingKnight a beast thats right, a fucking animal who needed putting down! shut the fuck up tyson ass licking cunt!!!

  • @WanderingTwin1

    Whatever, immature prick.

  • @TheGlowingKnight my comment was not immature in any way! i'm a realist, a man who speaks his mind and tells it how it is! immature..., dont think so!!!

  • I have been watching too much K-1 .. :D at 0:44 I really expected Douglas to knee Tyson in the face .. wtf boxing lol

  • if ruddock had some rhythm and a sharper jab he wouldve knocked tyson out too buster basically just laid down a blueprint on how to beat tyson....... what a sad end to a great champion but still a great prime example fight to prove nobodys invincible

  • Most of Tyson's opponents were mentally defeated before they even entered the ring and all that was left was the physical part. Mike was ineffective against guys who weren't intimidated as seen here. Besides, Tyson is flat-footed so it was only a matter of time before fighters realized he couldn't handle angles, lateral movement, foot speed, etc...

  • This is what Muhammed Ali would've done to Mike Tyson if they both were fighting each other in their prime.

  • buster made the fight of his live against a tyson witchs live already went to pure chaos.

  • @HomelessBobblehead

Actually, Tyson did KO Douglas with that uppercut. The ref counter too slow. It was something like a 12.5 count.

  • @TokyoFreeze79

Douglas was awake and listening to the count. He was not knocked out. Both his and Tyson's counts were the same length of time

  • @BruceinFalkirk

What does awake have anything to do with the ability to get up or not? Douglas could barely get up even with the long count. He would have been out by a normal ten second count.

  • @TokyoFreeze79

He was listening to the count and got up at 9. End of story.

  • @BruceinFalkirk

    Idiot

  • @TokyoFreeze79

No, you are the idiot. Even Mike Tyson admits he lost the fight fair and square.

Don King was the one who tried to have the fight result overturned and he was forced to back down by the outraged public response so GIRUY

  • Comment removed

  • Buster was CLEARLY the better man on this night.Tyson just got his ass handed to him.....simple as that!!Tyson has no reason to be ashamed-he got a beat down by a badder dude.Iron Mike was NEVER THE SAME AFTER THIS ASS WHIPPEN!!!

  • All I see is this Buster uses his long reach advantage, Tyson gets close Buster hugs Tyson. Yeah he's great boxer.....

  • @wannabethug7:

Yeah, that's what you're supposed to do against smaller opponents. Keep them at a distance and use your reach as an advantage. Give Buster some credit; he had himself a great fight against one of the greatest fighters of all time.

  • @AestheticFlavor I don't know I see using your footwork and arm reach credited boxing. Once you clinch I don't see that as boxing, but sadly supposedly it is.

  • @wannabethug7

That's actually what everyone else tried to do against Tyson, and they got ripped apart. Douglas, here, is actually not shooting straight for the clinch when Tyson dashes in. Watch, and you'll see him throw 2 or 3 quick shots before he grabs him. Those shots separate him from Tyson's other challengers, and they murder Tyson throughout the match. Not only that, but taking advantage of long reach is part of boxing.

  • @SirKickz To be honest though the last person to actually fight Tyson was his last match in 87. After that Tyson just started to decline he lost his discipline, training, potential everything was destroyed because of greed.

  • @wannabethug7

That may be absolutely true, but it doesn't change the fact that Douglas was an incredible boxer that night. Perhaps, Tyson, in his prime, would have won, perhaps not. At the end of the day, though, no one can watch this match and make the claim that Douglas was scared of Tyson, or the claim that Douglas was a bad boxer.

  • @SirKickz Oh yeah Douglas was a good boxer not belittling him or anyone that had the balls to go up against maniac tyson. Douglas was smart he knew he could Tyson because he saw Tyson decline as well.

  • tyson not in form in this fight!!

  • tyson can really take a punch

  • people talk about tyson being out of shape etc but this fight was so rediculously one sided that even tiptop shape mike probably would of lost,im a HUGE tyson fan but buster was just the sort of fighter he had trouble with and as the commentator keeps stressing "buster isnt afraid"which tyson wasnt used to,buster thrashed him and tyson had no answer at all, tyson had2 dig deep which he hadnt had to do before but anyone else would of been out in 3-4 rounds with the shots he tyson was taking

  • The announcer said it BEST. "A MAN who is STANDING up to him"

Mike is a GREAT fighter, but Buster was fighting with his MOTHER & GOD on his side.

  • @Gtwo13 so God wanted Mike Tyson to get knocked out??

  • @abdcc I thinks what he wants to say is that his beliefs gave Buster great motivation while Tyson was not very motivated as he use to.

  • @Gtwo13 yeah the made up invisible wizard in the sky was on his side.

  • @Gtwo13 Yeah, God chose Buster Douglass *rolls eyes*. Buster was no slouch for sure, but let's not forget to factor in to his loss Mike's lack of preparation and personal problems plaguing his life at the time.

  • @Gtwo13 No such thing as god.

  • @runtinsweet you didn't have to go there, you attention whore.

  • @Xplisit23 aww touch a nerve?

  • @runtinsweet No I'm just pointing out that you're starving for attention.

  • @Gtwo13 god vs allah. who won?

  • @mekishiko1919 God by SD

  • @mekishiko1919 evofuckinlution won u mug!!

  • @Gtwo13

its about he wasnt afraid like most of the fighters mike faced

  • @Gtwo13 god had nothing to do with it.

  • @Gtwo13 Tyson always had boxer's stand up to him.

  • Mike Tyson was the Ken Jennings of boxing.

  • People say Mike has a crappy chin,if he did,he would have lost in the 6th round or so

  • Tyson came to this fight unprepaired and overly confident. He had lost his ability to defend himself and his hand speed and style was no longer there. He should have never fired Roony.

  • @403766

McCall and Mercer are not "better" than Biggs and Thomas... certainly not better than Tucker, or even a 38 year old Larry Holmes. Keep in mind that Holmes went on to give other heavyweights hell after that fight, including Holyfield.

  • The commentary shows how invincible Tyson was considered at this time. They actually believed that Tyson was trying to tire out Douglas when he was getting badly beaten up

  • @saintcasper91 well before this fight tyson had 37 wins 0 losses, how can they not consider him invincible?

  • biggest upset in all sports not just boxing you gotta remember tyson was seen as unbeatable in 1990 and douglas was a 42-1 underdog bookies dont give those odds on a 1 on 1 contest unless they think its impossible.

  • Are they yellin "BUSTER; BUSTER" in the background ? :D

    Asian gamblers :D

  • put alis head on douglas body in this fight and this is how ali tyson would look.

  • @jimpurdie I wonder how Tyson would have responded to Ali's trash talk.

  • something that I dont understad is why Mike was so passive on this fight as the guy on the video said he didn't lanch a deep punch in the hole fight, he was like waiting Douglas takes the first shot all the time

  • Theres just people out there you cant beat not cause theyre stronger or better fighters but just because they fight in a way that you just cant out-fight

  • @Doc... "Lewis' team"? And you consider his "team" reliable sources? How did Tyson run from Holyfield? They were scheduled to fight in 1991 but Tyson was convicted and sent to jail. They would have fought in 1990 but Douglas defeated Mike in Tokyo. Prior to 1990 Evander was trying to become a legitimate heavyweight to provide Tyson some competition. Are McCall or Mercer any better than Tony Tucker, Tyrell Biggs, or Pinklon Thomas?

  • @eugenemcgirt

Umm yes Tyrell Biggs and Pinklon thomas are pretty shit Mccall and emrcer are definietly better than them.

  • tyson's not throwin enough punches and he's not placing them.

whenever he gets inside hes clinching whenhe should be throwing hooks and uppercuts

hes fighting like lennox lewis on the inside, but without the benefits of lewis's outside dominance

  • Wow @ Douglas from 1:18 to 1:28. I never actually watched this WHOLE FIGHT, but Douglas is whoopin some ass. Tyson not looking like himself at ALL here, but that's also been well documented.

Nice shot by Mike @ exactly 6:54 though.

  • Fuckin Target Practice Hahaha

  • @Doc... When did Mike say he ran from Lewis? What documentary or interviews have you viewed? What I've seen Mike say more than once is he fought Lennox for the MONEY... and wasn't in great shape physically or mentally for the fight.

  • @eugenemcgirt Watch Lewis Tyson 1984, where Lewis' team discusses how Tyson wanted no part of Lewis in 1996. Tyson ran from Holyfield for years, Foreman, and never got into the ring with guys like Ray Mercer of McCall. Doesn't that bother you?

  • @legion... Holyfield would have always been a tough fight for Mike... they are the same size and both thugs... it's a good matchup. Buster fought a great fight, was in shape, and motivated by the death of his mother. Douglas had excellent skills when he was in condition.

As for Lewis, the 2002 fight with Tyson was a joke... everyone knew Mike was done, including Lennox... Mike had only a small puncher's chance which Lennox knew he could avoid by tying him up in the early rounds

  • @legion... its quite interesting how you bring up the losses as times when fighters stood up to Tyson... what about Tony Tucker, Razor Ruddock, Frank Bruno, and countless others? YOu think EVERY fighter was intimidated by Mike? Heck, Tucker was one of the first guys to land a good shot on Mike.. Razor landed countless bombs against Mike. But, Mike perservered, took the punches, and won the fight.

So, if you want to be "fair" you'll cite the wins as well as the losses.

  • @dark... you're confused.. I'm talking prime Tyson, not 2002. In 2002 Tyson was equivalent of Ali in 1980.

Lennox had ZERO chance versus Mike as late as 1996.

  • @Doc... Tyson fought Lewis for MONEY... if you think Lennox could have beat a prime Tyson, you're entitled. I profess he had ZERO chance... When did Mike say he ran from Lewis? What documentary or interviews have you viewed? What I've seen Mike say more than once is he fought Lennox for the MONEY... and wasn't in great shape physically or mentally for the fight.

  • Lennox Lewis would not have lasted 4 rounds with Tyson, even the Tyson that lost to Douglas. Lewis was not nearly a good a boxer as what Buster showed on this night... fast jab, quick, nimble feet. Lewis was a lazy, plodding, slow fighter with a questionable chin at best.

  • @eugenemcgirt

Dude...Lewis KO'ED Tyson in round 8 when they fought in 2002...

get your facts straight before making claims like this...

  • @eugenemcgirt Oh please, Tyson himself disagrees with you! Tyson RAN from Lewis in 1996. Go look up: Tyson Lewis 1984 (it talks about their meeting way back) and see how Tyson ran from fighting Lewis in the 90s. He only fought Lewis when he had no other choice... and he went out like a BITCH.

  • The commentator is ridicolous

  • I don't buy this Tyson was out of his prime crap. He was only 23 in this fight. There's so many Tyson appologists out there.

  • @wwekane2468 its not about age its about how he fights after Cus died he began to jab less, he stopped moving his head and was allowing his opponents to clench. In his prime he was straight in with hard, fast, stiff jabs always moving the head so opponents shots couldn't rattle him, and if his opponents attempted to clench he shock them off and would rattle them with big close range punches. Stick to what you know about wwe haha.

  • Douglas is like " Mom i will beat the crap of this beast for you .. and i will never back down "

  • great punches/footage from 1:22 - 1:25

  • tyson looked kind of out of shape not taking anything away from douglas though

  • Douglas you cunt, tyson had you down for 13 seconds in the eighth saved by the bell and tyson is 50x the fighter you ever were.

  • @borisncfc100 Douglas made tyson look like a bitch in this fight besides when he got knocked down.

  • It's like in Rocky : An unknow and average fighter had the opportunity to fight the champion. He push his limits versus a too confident champion. This kind of fights prove all can happend in the ring : Tyson was favourite at 42 - 1 !

  • The perfect storm. Douglas was never and never would again be in such great form, since between his failing marriage and his dead mother, he really thought he had nothing else to live for and just didn't give a *@)@. Tyson didn't give a @#)@ for other reasons, and didn't against a few other fighters (see the Bruno fight, or Williams). But Buster wasn't going to be knocked out on mystique, so he got KOd by a man with reach and power. Stop hating. Douglas was simply your one-night nightmare.

  • "You know when a guy puts on tassels, he not bull----ing around" -Buster Douglas

  • I remember after this fight thinking that it might turn it around for Mike. I thought he'd rededicate himself to boxing and get his defense back. But legal problems and Mike's personal life robbed us of the most exciting heavyweight since Ali. I don't go in for the G O A T conversations but you can't deny he was the most exciting heavyweight of this period.

  • The announcer called this a 'terrific fight' at 4:32. Huh ? Why Because Douglas mounted an offense when Tyson mostly stood there...threw a shot or 2...and walked in and clinched most of the time ???? I think Tyson was high on the Paxil or whatever, and was kinda zombified. Then he finally got knocked out.

  • @oldpreach It wasn't a great fight because of athleticism between the two fighters. It was a great fight because it was extremely unexpected that Tyson would lose.

  • buster is stuff , but even tho buster won this match he looked more bruised than tyson

tyson is built for this and ofcourse a rematch would lay buster out his shoes too bad for lega shit

  • 5-1-1 Douglas. Douglas has a killer jab and is smartly taking on Mike. Tyson defense is poor, he's not bobbing and weaving like usual and hes not putting out much offense. But he did at least put on considerable offense in round 7

  • Tyson had no clue what he was doing up there that night. Where is his great defense or the fast combinations... It's sad to see

  • Tyson's skills went downhill after he left Kevin Rooney.

  • ali was a far superior fighter to buster, taking nothing away from buster, he didnt get intimidated by tysons rep and this is the main reason why he spanked bully boy

  • pause at 4:45 - awesome reach Buster has over tyson

  • he had to lose sometime didn't he? stop crying

  • tyson, joe frazier, foreman all destructive power...ali beat foreman who called "the invincible" back then and beat frazier...no suprised he can beat tyson, this man will find a way,he always find a way..well..anyways it's boxing...all unpredictable..!

  • DAMMMn Tyson you should had kept your head moving

why you stopped moving your head

  • Neither of these guys look like champion material. Very average. Buster was better, but anyone would have beaten Mike the way he fought that night. I agree that Tyson lost his opportunity to be classified as one of the greats due to choice of lifestyle. Sad really; heavyweight boxing needed a great in the 20-21st century.

  • ali???

  • Oops; I meant the turning of the 20th and into the 21st century. Cheers mate.

  • Also, those who make excuses for mike, this was a great fight for James Buster Douglas.

He was using his jab effectivly, and throwing together some good hard combinations. So don't make any BS about Mike being under trained and such. Douglas was the man in this fight.

  • Don't be ridiculous Tyson wasn't the same after spinks when he fired kevin rooney. He never trained like he should after it and it's not an excuse it's a fact because you never see mike fight the same as before.

  • You know.. I don't know whats so special about mike. He could have been the best ever; too bad he lost this fight.

I can think of a few all time greats that would stop him.

  • Such as who? Ali/Foreman? Lewis (obviously!), someone once said they thought that Primo Carnera would also beat him, I'm not too sure about that one though!

  • LOL!!!

    Listen to 2:37

"But a blind man, can see certainly, that douglas is in command."

    What a retard.

  • How is that retarded? Buster was in command pretty much the whole fight.

  • This was the closest Tyson came to a Thrilla In Manila. Muhammad Ali is still the greatest.

  • do japs have emotion lol

  • i think they were stunned at what they were seeing, lol

  • for me this is what Tyson and Holyfield would have been at the time. Holyfield not intimidated, trading with Mike in the center.

I'm a big Tyson fan, but I don't think he would have KO'd Holyfield at any time in his career in 1 or 2 rounds, as in annihaliting him.

  • he was knocked down by his sparring partner for this fight too ! he was eating japanese girls like grapefruit before the fight he said on one of his interview..if you notice he lost his balance so many times after he missed his big punches...that's why NO SEX BEFORE FIGHT ! he had tons of jappos the night before...mike was stupid and careless and douglas seized the opportunity !

  • Buster controlled this fight right from the opening bell. If Tyson couldnt intimidate an opponent he was fucked.

  • @ManlnCognito exactly this was the fight that showed Lewis, holyfield, and everyone else that all you had to do was stand up to tyson

  • Early on tyson had amazing skills, later he partied became the baddest man on the planet and yes, relied alot on his ability to beat opponents before the bell. But Tyson vs Tony tucker shows how he definatly had great skills early on

  • @TheRexecutioner

Tyson vs Tucker was boring fight with allot of holding by both of fighter.

Tyson did have skill and power, and looked great knocking out bums and has beens. Tyson limitations only show when he found himself in a real fight against a guy who's not going to roll over...like Buster Douglas.

Each time Tyson was properly tested he crumbled.

    Tyson good but not great

  • Tyson's not slipping, bobbing and weaving!

  • I love watching this match. Douglas has the fight of his life.

  • the punch he landed on Tyson at 1:21 sounded like an explosion. listen closely

  • Bottom line I think Tyson had become completely complacent by this point with these routine defences. I don't think he was in terrible shape physically but I don't think he was prepared to have to dig so deep in a fight like this. He didn't have that kind of focus going in and when things didn't go his way he unravelled. By the 5th or 6th he looks utterly bewildered. I don't think it's a lack of heart it was a major lack of focus but either way it was a lack of greatness.

  • You know what, I'll give you that. That's fair. I am a huge Tyson fan but that was well put. I think Tyson maybe had the most talent of any HW but he did unravel in fights and in life. When he lost his focus (Cus D'Amato) he lost his shot at greatness. But at his best....He was a loaded gun!

  • That's my perspective exactly.

  • @WBCHWCHAMPION sldo Tupac's death

  • @WBCHWCHAMPION Talent, yes, more like raw talent. Lennox had far more skill, but was bigger. It's a tough call. Nothing like watching Mike put some fucker away!

  • I watched Mike Tysons earlier fights on Espn the other day & most fighters tied him up if he came in too close because of the power in his uppercut. No one wants to get caught by those!

  • I watch a lot of his fights in the 80's, he was a well train fighting machine. He let himself go, should have retired when he send his orginal trainers packing.

  • i was 19 sat on the coach at my mums house with my first love when they announced on the news tyson got knocked outby buster, no one could beleive it, great fight too

  • I never watched many heavyweights bouts, but though they always tie themselves up that much, it's like every 5 seconds the ref had to pull them apart, the ref started pissing me off after a while, I don't understand why he wouldn't let'em fight it out? But then again I don't watch too many heavyweight fights.

  • lol these guys were afraid to say Douglas was winning all the rounds including the first, saying "i actually have him winning 2, 3 and 4"

  • haha. so true. buster was winning every round easy

  • 1:20 Sweet Combo By Buster.

  • Either way and taking nothing from Tyson...because when he was 20 and fighting with Rooney and fighting Larry Holmes and over the hill guys and some bums but some good fighters as well...he was really the shit. No one could go more than a few rounds...for instance the blown-up light heavy Spinks. But Tyson ruled the roost for a while. I'm just glad Muran stopped this when he did. Mike could have been killed and we would have missed out on some good boxing that lay ahead in spite of prison.

  • Spinks may have been a "blown up" LH, who is in the HOF and is considered to be an ATG Light-Heavyweight...but Spinks was taller and was 200 pounds who beat Larry Holmes for the title when Larry was undefeated....although Larry wasn't quite at his peak.

Considering Marciano's best wins came off of blown up LH fighters, who not only weren't as young as Spinks, nor undefeated....Tyson, deserves some credit...yes, no? He did take him out in 90 seconds.

  • Tyson was smeared in this fight... squashed like a roach..

  • Buster Douglas kicked Tyson's Ass from the first ding till the last. Even when Buster went down...he watched the ref and wisely rose at the last second...because the refs count is all that counts. When Tyson rose with his mouthpiece in Backward...he didn't even know what planet he was on and would have probably been killed if the fight had been allowed to go on.

  • Yeah everybody is right...Tyson was way past his Prime. Douglas was beating-up an old man who was like 23 years old at the time. 23 people! If 23 isn't prime....then this guy does need to be mentioned in the top 20 heavyweights. Can we also mention now that if Tyson's knee ever touched the canvas...he lost?! That's right! If Tyson didn't totally dominate someone...a bum, a tomato can...a 38 or 39 year old fighter...and found someone who would hit him and put him down....he stayed down.

  • You are 100% correct. The commentator even said we measure a great champion by how they handle adversity. Tyson never handled it very well.

  • Past his best is what many talk about. What made Tyson great was lost after Spinks. His doing, but still...point being he was a better trained fighter when he was with Kevin Rooney....the man that led him to the title and kept him in mental and physical condition to be an elite fighter.

Tyson from Berbick to Spinks beats any version of himself after Spinks. That's the point.

Other than that, yeah...I can agree that declining so fast is a major disappointment.

  • For never getting back up when being put down: Tyson was too strong to fall. His chin was very good, his legs strong, and just something that kept him up to take the punishment. Even when he was a shot fighter, he somehow took beatings until the end...which even shocked Lewis.

You had to severely beat the shit out of him to make him drop and when he did, there was nothing left to give to get up and win.

  • That is much different than the many fighters that get hurt by one punch, go down, and still have energy to fight back. Tyson gets hit with a huge shot and still stands and continues on. He doesn't suffer "flash-knockdowns" or regular knockdowns from one big shot (especially early). It is repetitive blows for many rounds until he is done. He is not the type of person to take a knee either.

  • It's funny how we give credit to fighters that go down from one punch, go down early (when they still have energy), or suffer "Flash-knockdowns", yet when a fighter is stunned (bad) but doesn't go down.....no credit if he comes back after that.

Competition: Take Marciano off the list of ATG.

  • I respect what you have to say, yet, Marciano was about 5'10 Tyson about 5'11...Marciano was about 185 and Tyson about 225...he looked a version of Jersey Joe walcott or Joe Frazier. Marciano got his face knocked in many times and got knocked down but always got back up. He hit a guy hard enough to kill him in the 13th round. He never lost a fight. You can't compare his heart to Tyson's. We all know Tyson's mind went first and his heart followed. Sad and no joy in it...but true.

  • I'm just going to go for the long answer to clear some things up why I said what I said:

Weight and Height: Tyson was actually around 5'11, 215-221 during his best years when he was trained under Rooney and pre-Prison. Tyson was considered a "small" Heavyweight in his era. Even Emanuel Steward in an interview was surprised at how well he did considering how "small" he was. Stocky/Thick for withou a doubt, but height and weight was more on the "small" side in his era.

  • I think the avg. for height in Tysons era was 6′ 2½″ and not sure on the weight but they tended to be around or even heavier than 220. In Marciano's era, not as big in height and weight.

And some of these guys werent the lumbering HW like Willard or Carnera (who did have a solid/massive physique)...although you could see some were obviously not in the best shape with regards to their physique.

  • Marciano, and we could fault his era, fought mostly fighters that moved up in weight and were below 200 pounds and around his height. Take for example his top fighters: LaStarza: 60, 185+; Rex Layne, 61, 193; Moore, 511, 188; Charles, 60, 185+, who was also known as a LH; Walcott, 60, 196+. Some of these fighters even started below the weight they fought Marciano at and moved up through the years. Some were considered "Light-Heavyweights" for example.

  • And then, you have to look at what stage of their career they were in when they fought Marciano. Not only birth age but ring/life age. Many already had gone through very tough fights, fought many times over, had been knocked out in prior fights. and even a tough life outside of the ring.

  • When a fighter is at a certain age, a certain ring age of wear and tear, had been knocked out prior, and has lossesit can help boosts your own confidence (which goes along with heart) when you fight themespecially if you have power. Even if you are behind in a fight, knowing the opponent's age, wear and tear, that he was knocked out and has many losses going into this fight with you, can help keep your confidence up.

  • Other than that, what definitely helped Marciano (that helped Tyson when he was going well), was the combination of a great trainer (right for him), as well as making sure he was in tip-top shape both Mentally and Physically. Discipline was key. Passion for the sport is good. Setting goals is good. The right mind frame helps the body. And so on.

Marciano never showed up out of shape...never unprepared to fight. That's something to admire and follow.

  • An out of shape, not motivated, under-trained, no game-plan fighter that lives in chaos isn't going to be strong mentally in or outside of the ring. It's also why he was worse after prison than he was after he left Rooney...and stronger when he was with Rooney than any time after.
