  • Hi its not good, i change the power inverter and it lights up for about 3 secs then it went black again

  • i have a sony vaio lap top that goes black screen sometimes. I have to angle it to get the screen normal. Now it is going white screen and i have to shake or angle badly to get screen to look normal. What could be the cause of this? what would u suggest i try fixing? I do not think there has been any liquids spilled on it, i know it has been dropped once or twice. The lap top is only 1 year old. Please let me know what I can do to fix it i would appreciate it very much :)

  • Thank you very much! I will get a new inverter on ebay and try to fix it myself. You and your video is a big help to everyone

  • @sandiego11

Save the link to the video so that you can come back to it when you get your replacement part. Also try to comment when you come back with a response whether it was successful or not.

  • Hi i have a problem how will i know which one is not working the power inverter or the lcd bulb. I can still see picture and text on my screen there is just no light that comes up. Please help

  • Hi @sandiego11,

honestly there is a tool but it costs $60 I believe. Not worth it for one repair.

In 90% of the cases its the inverter, and if the laptop is older it will be pretty cheap, so not to high of a risk if it is not. Prices range from $5-40 depending on how new the laptop is. (newer ones are using LED... forget the inverter)

If you have a similar laptop you can test the inverter by replacing it with it.

If it burned out over night, I would say go with the inverter. If you dropped it...

  • why do you have to remove the battery???

  • @davetheflave1055

Both the battery and power supply give (supply) power to the laptop EVEN IF THE LAPTOP IS OFF.

Once you discharge the static built up in your laptop you can remove the various components needing attention. Usually you are unaware of the static discharge. It can discharge with the simple touch of your finger on any of the grounding of the laptop (usually the larger metal components)

Having power supplied to a component while removing it can surge other components.

    God Bless

  • Thank you for this video - lots of helpful tips.

Dropped my laptop, and over the course of a week, the screen progressively became darker, until one side lost all backlight, and then the other. Bought an inverter on ebay after watching this, and fitting it went very smoothly (except for one absolutely tiny screw holding the interter in place; nice one Dell!).

    Thank you.

  • Was just checking out your video with the Toshiba inverter repair. It so happens I have that same laptop and that same problem. There's two questions I have to ask. First, what type of tools do you need to open the laptop screen? Second, Did you have to completely remove the screen out to remove the old inverter or did you just do it the way you did in your video that all you had to to do was remove those two little wires from the side of the inverter and remove it like that? Thanks.

  • @Carizion

    Hi Carizion,

    not tricks in the video:

    1. remove 4 rubber screw covers

    2. remove 4 screws in front bezel (small tip philipps)

    3. remove the screw holding the inverter in place (small tip philipps)

    4. unplug the 2 inverter cables

    5. repeat the process backwards

That should be all. Remember to remover power supply from charger and battery.

    Thank you

  • VERY HELPFUL VIDEO!!

  • hi i need help i replaced mine and it still flickers on and off

  • just took a look at your video. was wondering if u know anything about the compaq pesario c700 models. i replaced the lcd cable and now have a backlight problem. was wondering if i didnt replace the inverter right after I took it off. i noticed the the inverter board is supposed to touch the foil pieces One of them touches but dont know where/how to place the second foil piece. does this also mean I have to re assemble the entire screen assembly to see if it works properly? answer please..

  • @windsmitten

I do not know specifically about your laptop model.

There is a chance you loosened your inverter cable. I would check the monitor ones first (in and out of the board) then I would check the one going from your mother board to your inverter.

If you replaced a ribbon cable, that may have damaged your inverter cable where it goes through the bezel joints. You can use a tester to find out.

Your inverter may need to be replaced.

I don't think you're foil would directly affect the

  • @insidehardware88

I dont think you're foil would directly affect the inverter. If so you should at least see it light up and then flash or turn off. The foil is just for extra grounding. Most new laptops do not even have near as much as old ones do.

    Hope that is helpful.

  • Hi,great video I have a toshiba A665 laptop and when its playing a movie if you bump it or pick it up when playing you hear like a schock!,and if its playing any kind of audio after a while it will make that schocking sound, could this be the inverter?becouse i replaced the lcd screan a while ago but i didnt replace the inverter. Thanks and great video, gio.

  • @gio048

I have never heard of the inverter board conflicting with speakers.

    1. My guess would be that you possibly loosened a cable when you opened you laptop... sometimes the sound cable on the right or left side runs along side the video cable that enters the monitor bezel.

    2. Another option could just be that your speakers or one of your speakers is shot. You would then need to replace them, just as your would any other part on the computer.

    hope that is helpful.

  • okay so my hp g60 . . when i turned it on . .

    thank you!

  • @MrJamesChao

    Hi Mr. James Chao,

that is a perfect symptom of a bad inverter.

I would feel 100% comfortable telling you to buy and replace it with a new one.

  • the problem isnt my inverter. its the connection cord things. one of the wires snapped during removal of the inverter. what is the name for them. how much do they usully cost? and is it easly replaced?

  • hi do you know where can i fing a lcd invertor for a sony vaio vgn-a790?

  • i a,m a college student and wondering how can i get an inverter board for my Asus vx1 Lamborghini. the guy fixing my laptop replaced the screen and all but he said i need to replace the inverter board

where can i get the right inverter from or is there a alternative to getting the inverter.

please help me out if you can ASAP.

    thank you .

  • @kahmad5

I would look on ebay or just google it.

  • my compaq has very dim display,is it the problem with inverter?

  • Dear @leo5756

it can be either the inverter is shot or:

if your laptop is old enough, and you have used it a lot, the bulb will begin to dim over time.

My first laptop, a macbook pro, first gen, horrible computer, I would leave it on over night with the screen saver running all night. I found nearly 2 years later, that I could barely see graphic while sitting in a well lit up class room.

  • Hi,

My Sony Vaio did not switch on one day and my warranty is over, so I opened up the laptop and found two screws rolling inside(which must have short circuited). The Laptop switched on but the screen did not. Then I actually found out that I could vaguely see whats happening, it was very very dim - very similar when we hit "display off" button in Vaio.

So I don't know what to do. Should replace the screen or the inverter. Or is there something wrong with the Mother board??

  • the best test you can do is:

    1. plug in an external monitor.

    2. if it all works fine, than your computer is fine.

    3. if it gives you controls for the laptop screen, it means that the screen is working and that it recognizes it. in which case you need to replace the inverter.

    4. if the external monitor isnt coming on, you may have a larger issue... like your power system, your mother board, or graphics card.

    hope that is helpful.

I have never heard of 2 loose screws short circuiting.but possi

  • @insidehardware88

I am having trouble finding a Sony Vaio Inverter online. Could you direct to a website, where I can buy a Inverter? It would be of great help if you could reply to this.

    Thanks much.

  • Hello! I have a broken inverter which acts as usual: when i plug in the power-cord it turns on for a second (making some noises), then switches off.

There's a problem to replace it cause there's only one person who has them, and he's in the US and doesn't ship to Russia. So I gonna try to fix it first. I think the only 2 things that could be broken is a circuit-chip and a strange rectangular black thing with 3 wires. What's that thing and can I just replace it (I have some broken lcd-displays)?

  • @Valet2

    Hi Valet,

if you can find the bad component on a board you can replace it with one with the same values (if you order it or find one on another screen). Generally the components on a board are pretty small, but if you can detach and put a new one it... that would be great.

The little black thing sounds like a capacitor.

  • @insidehardware88 I have a laptop which turned it has regular start up but then goes all black is that inverter ?

  • please continue your comments. from now on I will get them by email and will be able to respond asap.

one hint to many of you... this seems to be a common question... computers, lcds, inverters, are all very similar components. they will vary in size, layouts, and specs but essentially they are the same... from computer to computer... regardless of brand...

  • @insidehardware88

remember, these are the questions to ask:

    1.does the screen work? no

    2. is there a picture in the back of the screen but no light? then it is either the bulb or inverter (most likely the inverter)

3, does the screen light come on, but no picture? then bulb and inverter are good. the graphics card, LCD, or cable may need replacement.

  • fatblueballs, if the external monitor doesn't show a display, the problem is the graphics chipset. Especially if it's a Pavilion dv2000, dv6000, and dc9000 series of Notebook PC. These particular laptops have a poor cooling system. The graphics chipset overheats, and loosens the solder connections in the BGA surface mount on the motherboard. Poor solder connections result in the problem you described. Look up >HP DV9000 blank screen fix! on Youtube

  • hey so i think the problem is my inverter but i hooked my laptop up to another monitor and the screen is still messed up but i can at least see the image. could it be my inverter and my video card? or what do you think?

  • hi again is there anyway to test an inverter to see if its faulty or not, as ive seen a video on youtube somebody connecting a test meter to a laptop inverter to see how much power it is putting out, if so what is the max power an invertor should be putting out and also what is the proper way to connect the meter to the inverter? thanks again..

  • hi great tutorial video, i have a siemens fujitsu amilo laptop pi1505 have you ever worked on them before? my screen started jumping and going black recently but that only happens when it is running on battery power and not on AC is this a common problem in laptops in general? if so could it be the inverter or the screen, when this occurs i have to power my laptop off via the power button and when i turn it on again everything works fine.

  • I have the same question as pablobermeoa, how do you know which part of a monitor is broken. I suspect a capacitor in my screen is broken but how do you troubleshoot without replacing it?

  • Thanks for the video.

How would i know if it is the inverter that is failing in my laptop?

I have a VAIO VGN-FZ180E and my screen goes partially black but then gets better again. It did go completely black once, but after rebooting it works again but still goes black some times, looks as if there were some loose connections.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks a lot.

    Best,

    Pablo

  • @pablobermeoa I have the same problem on my toshiba a200 14d. did you find any solution?

  • @ostja85 I did nothing, it stopped doing it by itself. Somebody told me i might have done something when i dissasembled it to clean the fan, but it is nothing but especulations. Sorry i can't be of more help.

  • Is this kind of general purpose? Like you can use it... say with most any monitors?

  • @mbe102 Because I'm having to fix mine in my Samsung SyncMaster 206BW.
