Yep Marines were first to fight in WW2 infact i dont recall but i think US Marines put on the Navy Vessals as security during pearl harbour where the only personnel to carry firearms around the vessels. But the Seamen took a few minutes to get the ammunition loaded on the guns and to get into the armories when it started.

@meltona In a WW2 context, the Flying Tigers - officially the American Volunteer Group or 'AVG' were American pilots, mostly from the Army Air Corps who wanted to join the war against Japan before the U.S. was officially at war. The only way to do that was to resign and join the Chinese air force. They flew American planes which had Chinese markings as well as the distinctive teeth which gave them their name. Though there may have been members who were formerly USMC, this would have been rare.

I'm not sure about the other wars, but only my only war, Viet Nam.

A place called hill 327. The Marines took the hill, and turned it over to the Army. They lost it in combat. The Marines took it again. Gave it to the Army. They lost it again and the Marines retook it. The Marines kept it, and made a great US base.

Sometimes called Freedom Hill. Until the end

of the Viet Nam war the Marines were still holding it.

Because about a week later Mike Strank (one of the flag raisers and my idol) died, and then that same afternoon Harlon Block died. And Ralph Ignatowski went missing. @Devildog1591 there's no way to guarantee you'll go anywhere, regardless of your MOS. i was in artillery, but i went to iwo when i was attached to the 31st MEU. there was infantry, artillery, comm, air wing...pretty much any job you can think of. if you go on a meu, there's no telling where you'll end up. but if you get stationed in okinawa, regardless of your job, you could go to iwo on your own if you wanted...they do tours pretty regularly there.

Watch the movie or read the book. DURING the fight they were ordered to go play in the water. On the other side of the island the fighting was still raging on and a few Marines were stripping down into their skivvies and playing in the water.
